2020 FORD MUSTANG HIGH PERFORMANCE PACKAGE: LESS WEIGHT, MORE THRILLS T en years ago, a 4.6-liter V8 powered Ford Mustang GT produced 315 horsepower, 325 lb-ft of torque, and sounded sweet. Today, Ford has a new package for the base Mustang with an engine that’s half the size and half the number of cylinders, yet makes 332 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. Yes, a turbocharger helps. At least the V8 still sounds better. Ford’s latest creation is called the High Performance (Hi-Po) Package, a $4995 option available on the base Mustang, dampers, and, of course, nice and sticky Pirelli P-Zero summer which swaps out the standard 2.3-liter turbocharged four- tires, 255/40R19. Ford also added GT brakes, 13.9-inch rotors cylinder for the same sized, but internally different Focus four-piston calipers in front and 13.0-inch rotors with single- RS engine. Engineers configured the inline-four to mount piston calipers in back. To sum it up, from a chassis perspective, longitudinally under the hood, increased turbo size, and re- the Hi-Po is more aggressive than a Mustang GT. tuned it for a broader mid-range, 350 lb-ft at 3,000 rpm, but at And that’s all well and good. But for an extra $1995, least 315l b-ft between 2,500 – 5,300 rpm. That’s a 40 percent Ford offers the Handling Package on top. Check that box and improvement over the stock EcoBoost engine as well. You get you trade up to MagneRide (Magnetorheological, which uses peak horsepower at 6,000 rpm, by the way, which is not far electro magnets and fluid with tiny metal flakes to affect from the 6,500 rpm redline. viscosity, which affects damping force) shocks, even bigger The package is available on the coupe or convertible front and rear anti-roll bars, stiffer front springs, a Torsen and comes with either the 6-speed manual or 10-speed limited-slip differential, wider wheels and mega grippy Pirelli automatic transmissions. Performance claims are impressive: 0- P-Zero Corsa4 tires, 265/40R19 on both axles. 60 mph “in the mid-fours’’ and a top speed governed at 155 These changes put the Handling Package up to the mph. For reference, the top speed of the GT in 2010 was 149 chassis level of the Mustang GT Performance Package Level 2, mph, also governed. There’s also a limited-slip differential in in fact both packages use same anti-roll bars. One key back with a 3.55:1 final-drive ratio to help put that power difference, with the smaller, and lighter, motor, the Handling down. Package car weighs 200 lbs. less than the GT Level 2. And all Handling wise, vehicle dynamics got busy, adding of that weight difference is on the front axle. roughly 10 percent stiffer springs to both the front and rear axle, You feel it. Weight is the ultimate enemy of a bigger rear anti-roll bar, 0.85-inch (21.7 mm), re-tuned performance and this Mustang has less of it to deal with than the others. That comes across as soon as you turn the wheel as it’s so much more willing to turn-in; even with quick to left to right transitions, there’s much less time the car needs to move the weight from one side to the next. It’s not just weight, of course: The suspension and tire got adjustments to match the added athleticism. Push hard enough and the front axle gives up grip first, but it’s all easily manageable. In 2010, I argued that 315 horsepower provided enough oomph to not fuss. Well, this engine provides more power and a lot more torque. Driving through all the tight twists and turns of highway 1, north of San Francisco, I found myself (contd. on pg. 12) 4

O n Sunday, September 15th it felt like we were waking up in London with the dense fog and misty weather but by registration time it was sunny and nice. Cars started showing up by 8 am and the field very quickly filled up with a fantastic 231 cars. Beautiful, quality cars of all sorts. I need to thank our sponsors first and foremost, Nielsen Ford, Mike DeLeo and his staff, Power Portal, Peter and Kevin for their continued support. We also had five vendors as well as our regular food truck, Jersey Johnny and Mr. Softee Ice Cream Truck As most of you know, just a week prior to the show our DJ Chris was in a horrific motorcycle accident resulting in the loss of his left foot but even with all he had going on he reached out to a friend of his, Matt from Monteray Entertainment to fill in for him and all went very well. In talking to Mike from Nielsen Ford during the day, he was over the top happy with everything which brings me to our club. This show would not have been the great success that it was without the amazing, tireless help of all the members that day. Maureen & I owe you all a huge thank you, it made the day go very well. So again, thank you and let’s start planning for next year. Text - Tom Addeo, # 624 Photos – Ken Najarian, #810 & Mike D., # 001 8

Well, that and the shift gates are quite close to each other and I twice found myself shifting from 2ndto 5thas opposed to 3rd. And the snarl from the engine, while not V8 sonorous, did sound appropriately energetic, without being overzealous like the Focus RS. Driving the handling pack is a noticeable step up from the standard hi-po pack. The tires offer more grip and the MagneRide shocks tighten things up noticeably. The car tucks into a corner beautifully with less understeer than any other Mustang offered, with unexpectedly good balance. Again, only 53 percent of the weight is on the front axle, not the GT’s 55 percent. This is quickest on its feet too. The handling package car does better work than most to take full advantage of the base Mustang GT coupe costing $36,725.
