A career change took me into the business medical field.
After completing an introductory course I undertook a more
advanced course. This built on my basic administration
skills as well as introduced me to management. It was
great to be able to take the steps towards a management
position in administration, between on the job experience,
and training and further study, this is what I am aiming for.
I’ve found The Gordon to be a great place to take that
first step into a brighter future if you are looking at
making a change in life. All of my teachers have been
 so extremely helpful, approachable, knowledgeable
and understanding. During remote learning, I did not
feel like I was left to my own devices, they were there
every step of the way. With The Gordon, you are not
doing it on your own as long as you are engaging
and utilising what The Gordon has to offer.”

The first course I chose was very practical and hands-on. I enjoyed
being able to demonstrate my skills through practical, industry
relevant assessments. This helped me discover my creativity
and desire to pursue further studies in a creative field.
Through The Gordon I was offered pathways to explore potential
careers without having to commit to long-term study until I was sure
of my preferred path. Having completed several TAFE courses, I’ve
come to realise that I don’t have to focus on one career outcome. I can
use my skills in many different ways to pursue multiple opportunities
throughout the rest of my working life. Right now, I am continuing
my studies at University as I aim to pursue a career as an architect.”

I have a background in health and liked the idea of becoming a
horticultural therapist. On job searching, I realised a qualification in
horticulture was really going to help me to secure work. Most jobs
required Certificate III as a minimum, so that is where I started.
I studied at Werribee Park. It really is a spectacular setting in which
to learn all facets of horticulture. The teachers were fantastic. I
enjoyed the other people in the course and I loved how hands
on it was. We always did a little bit of theory in the classroom
and then stepped outside to really put things into practice.
I have enjoyed gardening and in particular growing food for
many years as a passionate hobby. I thought I was going to
become a market gardener or a horticultural therapist working
with people solely growing food. During the 12 months though, I
became incredibly passionate about indigenous plants. Studying
at The Gordon completely changed the direction I thought I
was going in. It opened up new doors and interests for me.”

Studying at Trade School has had an enormous positive
impact on my development and ability to achieve my
career goals. My confidence in my own abilities has
grown and my skills have grown from learning from
teachers and mentors with industry experience.
I have been able to develop my skills at my own pace as the
teachers at The Gordon are very accommodating with different
learning styles, so the challenges I had at school were not a
problem at Trade School. And as the training is competency
based, I have been able to progress at my own pace.
I have been very supported as an apprentice, both
at Tenon Joinery and at The Gordon. My gender has
not been a challenge and I would certainly encourage
more women to consider taking on a trade.”

I had heard good things about The Gordon and
since commencing a Certificate III in Commercial
Cookery there, I have learnt many new techniques
that I’ve been able to apply at my workplace.
Cooking a wide array of dishes, learning new techniques and
having a great group of apprentices to do trade school with
has made training really enjoyable. There is huge depth of
industry experience among the chefs who teach us and The
Gordon students and teachers make it feel like a family.”

With both my daughters at school, I decided it
was time to pave my own path in this world. I have
always had a great interest in health and nutrition.
After completing a Certificate III Bridging into
Nursing at The Gordon, I had the confidence and
tools I needed to apply for the Diploma of Nursing.
I really enjoyed learning in class, but when you
go out on placement it reality kicks in. It’s an
opportunity to bring all my newly learnt skills
together and practice. Placements are the
highlights of my course. It is satisfying to see
firsthand what nurses are doing in the health
industry and I cannot wait to work as an enrolled
nurse and work in the health care industry.”
