Page 3 DISTRICT OFFICE From the Superintendent’s Office G reetings! One of the simple things my mom used to tell me was to “plan my work and then work my plan” to get the most out of my day. Parent-teacher conferences, when approached using that same simple lesson from my mom, can have a significant impact on how parents and teachers can partner to best support our students. MS Cross Country Team Visits District Office There was a time when a five to fifteen-minute face-to-face conference between a parent and a teacher each semester was the most common way for parents to keep up with the academic progress their student was making at school. Now, through the use of technology, the teacher’s grade book is accessible to students and parents 24 hours a day. The five to fifteen-minute conference conversation can now be expanded to be more about the whole student, not just what the teacher sees in the classroom academically. As you prepare for your conference, have a plan that included the following items: Review your child’s academic information in PowerSchool before attending the conference. Meet & Greet Event With Staff Ask your child about her/his experiences at school - What is the best part of her/his school day? Schedule a time for your conference that will allow you to arrive a few minutes early so that you are not feeling rushed during the first few minutes of this critical conversation. Have a few questions in mind that you can ask the teacher during the conference. Be sure to include “What can we do at home to help support our child when she/he is at school?” Success in the classroom is the result of students, families and school staff all working together. Red Flannel Committee Breakfast Bring a pen and paper to the conference to write down important notes regarding your child’s successes and areas for improvement at school. Share the highlights of the conference with your child. Let her/him know what you learned from their teacher about their progress so far at school. Parent-teacher communication is no longer a progress update that occurs twice a year. According to Heather Bastow Weiss, founder, and director of the Harvard Family Research Project, “Conferences are now a (face-to-face) Board of Education Meeting progress report timed so parents can do something about what they learn from their child’s teachers.” For more information on increasing the effectiveness of your fall conference, please refer to the following resources: How to Make the Most of Parent Teacher Conferences Family Global Research Project Strategy Guide How To Make the Most Out Of Your Ten Minutes With the Teacher - NPR To continuously improve in the area of communication with families, if we are not meeting your needs as a family in this area, please let us know so we can take steps to assist you in your efforts as you do your best to support our amazing students. With respect and appreciation, Scott B. Smith, Superintendent

Teams review curriculum, discuss instructional strategies, review and create common assessments, analyze data and review individual student progress to determine if any additional support is necessary. Student Early Release days were designed to support student learning: By providing time for teachers to review student data on a regular basis. To make adjustments to teaching in order to increase student achievements. By allowing teachers to provide best practice teaching everyday in every classroom. To improve the delivery to students through reviewing teaching research. Students will release two (2) hours early on Student Early Release Days. Times will vary by building.

Page 6 Mental Health Matters - Is it Bullying? By Sarah Wilcox, School Counselor Bullying is a word that is heard often. At times I have noticed that students will identify a situation as bullying when it isn’t because they do not know what else to call it. I have found that when I review the four categories with a student, it has helped them to understand whether or not they were bullied. It has helped staff know how to resolve the situation. Here are four categories to help you and your child identify if a situation is or is not bullying: Joking Around: Everyone is having fun. No one is getting hurt. Everyone is participating equally. One Time Thing: Someone is being mean on purpose. It’s a reaction to a strong emotion or feeling. It happens once and doesn’t repeat itself. Conflict: Two people with a balance of power that have a fight, argument or disagreement. A solution can be found. Bullying: Repeated, unwanted aggressive behavior towards someone. Someone is being hurt on purpose. Can be social, verbal, physical, or cyber. The Student Services team is here to help. Contact your building principal for additional information.
