All Saints Catholic School Building Saints, Scholars, and Children of God What’s Happening at All Saints Catholic School The All Saints Catholic School seventh and eight grade students have been learning about several Saints in religion class. They are reading a book titled Rediscover the Saints by Matthew Kelly. The students are learning that the Saints are living models of how to live Christ’s teachings. By studying the Saints, the students are learning that we can achieve great things, holy moments, and serve Him as we should. One Saint we studied is St. Therese of Lisieux. From her, the students learned that our purpose in life is to love others. By doing small acts of kindness with great love, we are doing God’s will. We dreamed up individual things we can do in our homes, school, parish, and community. Our group is called “The Little Way Committee.” It has been very joyful coming together to do these acts. One Little Way Act was inspired by seventh grade student Garrett Lundt. Garrett came up with this idea to host a food drive for the Berlin Area Food Pantry. “You don’t see a lot of it, but there is hunger out there,” said Garrett, “I saw a poster that told me that one in five children go hungry. This made me think that not everybody else has what we have and we should give them a chance to have food.” It was decided to kick off the food drive during Catholic Schools Week which is January 31st-February 7. While all non-perishable goods will be welcomed, students and families have been asked to bring the requested items below. According to the pantry, the items listed are currently the greatest need. The Berlin Area Food Pantry request: • Peanut Butter • Canned meats (all kinds, tuna, chicken, spam, etc.) • Pasta (all kinds) • Pasta Sauce • Soups (all kinds) • Canned meals (spaghetti & meatballs, etc) • Paper products Anyone interested in donating items to the All Saints Catholic School food drive may drop them off by the school office by entering door number 1 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. starting Monday, February 1 through Friday, February 5. (Please note 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. -3:15 p.m. are especially busy times with student arrival and dismissal times.) Special thanks from the All Saints Catholic School Little Way Committee to everyone who is helping us help others! SCRIP is available at the school office, 8AM - 3PM, Mon.- Fri. All Saints Catholic School Building Saints, Scholars, and Children of God This week begins Catholic Schools Week. Catholic Schools week is celebrated nationwide. The National Catholic Education Association lists a dozen reasons to choose Catholic Schools: 1. We offer an education that combines Catholic faith and teachings with academic excellence. 2. We partner with parents in the faith formation of their children. 3. We set high standards for student achievement and help them succeed. 4. We provide a balanced academic curriculum that integrates faith, culture and life. 5. We use technology effectively to enhance education. 6. We instill in students the value of service to others. 7. We teach children respect of self and others. 8. We emphasize moral development and self-discipline. 9. We prepare students to be productive citizens and future leaders. 10. We have a 99% high school graduation rate. 85% of our graduates go on to college. 11. We cultivate a faculty and staff of people who are dedicated, caring and effective. 12. We provide a safe and welcoming environment for all. We are blessed here in Berlin to have had Catholic Schools for over 130 years now. St. Stanislaus School opened in 1890, St Michael School was established in 1904, and St. Joseph School officially opened in 1953. And in 1979, all three Catholic Schools merged into one. Catholics have long known the benefits of a Catholic education for their children. Here is a paragraph taken from a booklet from St. Joseph Parish in 1935 which speaks of this. Why Catholic Schools Exist - St. Joseph Parish, Berlin, circa 1935 Catholics believe that when God became man and taught and told his disciples to teach all nations, there were definite facts they had to teach, and parents demand that their Catholic school because it is in such a school that those lessons are given. So, too, training for life in this world and in the next cannot be a set subject. It must permeate the whole atmosphere. If we believe that this world is but a preparation for the next, we are bound to view everything in relation to that final purpose. For God made man to know him, love Him, and serve Him in this world, and to be happy with Him forever in the next. So here we are in 2021 with the same goals—to prepare our children for life in this world—and the next. All Saints Catholic School Accreditation Survey Every seven years, our Catholic School needs to go through an accreditation process - and this is our year. Part of this process is for the parishioners to fill out a survey regarding our school. This survey is an important part of keeping our Catholic School accredited. Elementary schools in the Diocese of Madison are accredited through the Wisconsin Religious and Independent Schools Accreditation (WRISA). The Wisconsin Catholic Schools Accreditation (WCSA) process was approved by the bishops in all five dioceses in Wisconsin and is used in Catholic elementary schools throughout the state. It is grounded in the "National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools." These standards and benchmarks are grounded in Church teaching found in Vatican documents, as well as those authored by the United States Confer- ence of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Having an accredited school is important for students, parents and the parish, as it provides a measure of assurance that our children are receiving a high-quality, Catholic education. It also allows for celebration of achievements and strategic planning for the future. This survey is for all parishioners, whether you have children enrolled in our school or not. Below is a link to take the survey online, OR you can fill out the enclosed paper survey and return it in the enclosed envelope by mailing it to All Saints Catholic Church, PO Box 269, Berlin, WI 54923, or you can drop it off at the church or school office or put it in the collection basket. Thank you for taking the time to do this for our school! Parishioner Survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/AllSaints

News and Announcements ASH WEDNESDAY Wednesday February 17th, 2021 - We will be having a Mass sign up for Ash Wednesday Mass times. Knowing that many people wish to attend Mass on Ash Wednesday, we will be following the same format that we used for Christmas, to ensure we stay within our max capacity limits and prevent overcrowding. (Max capacity is 250 people which includes utilizing the gathering space with chairs set up; socially distanced) • We ask that parishioners only sign up for one Mass time. Please include the number of people in your household and any guests that may be accompanying you. • It is also important to inform you on how ashes will be distributed this year. During the Mass, the priest blesses the ashes, he (and deacon) with hands outstretched, give the words of reminder "Remember that you art dust, and to dust you shall return" once to all present. Then there will be two manners of distribution of ashes that will take place at the conclusion of Mass, which are outlined below. There will be no speaking and no repetition of the blessing. Distribution of ashes being sprinkled on the crown of the head is recommended by the diocese. This has been the rule in many other countries. However, we are given the option of having two different types of lines: One line for those who choose receive ashes the traditional way on their foreheads. (Those who receive it on their foreheads must understand the thumb that's touching their forehead has touched many others). The other line will be for those who wish to have ashes sprinkled on the crown of their head. We ask that the lines keep moving quickly with "very limited face to face exposure". Please exit church after receiving the ashes. If you choose not to receive ashes you may exit out as soon as Mass is complete. Below are the Signup Links for each Mass time. Again the 9:15 AM and the 6:00 PM each have its own sign up link. There will be only 250 spots available per Mass and will be first come first serve. This means some may be assigned to sit in the chairs in the gathering space. If one or both Mass times become full, there will be overflow seating in our social hall with the Mass Live streamed on the TV’s in the social hall. (Please note that Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation.) For those who do not have internet access to sign-up, we ask that family members assist each other in doing so, or you may call the parish to have a parish office team member assist you in signing up for a Mass time. To sign up - go to the corresponding link below for the Mass you wish to attend. Click on the orange box that says Sign UP, then select Submit & Sign UP. You will then be able to enter the family name and number of people who will be in your household attending that Mass time. News and Announcements Diocese of Madison Annual Catholic Appeal 2021 “The Kingdom of God is at Hand” The ACA (or Annual Catholic Appeal) is a way for the diocese to raise funds necessary to cover the many ministries and services they provide to all parishes and people throughout the diocese. The ACA is to the diocese what the weekly collection basket is to the parish. It’s tempting to think of the diocese as a building or a set of offices located in Madison. Rather, it is 102 parishes and the parishioners in those parishes, along with staff from such offices as Evangelization and Catechesis, Building Commission, Catholic Charities, Apostolate to the Handicapped and Deaf, Safe Environment Program, Catholic Schools, and more…… These and the 102 parishes under the direction of the Bishop, the Vicar General, and the Diocesan Tribunal make up The Diocese of Madison. Each parish is given a goal to work toward to help their diocese meet its total goal for the year. Goals are calculated for each parish based on things such as their size. Therefore, the larger parishes with more parishioners and resources are given a higher goal. In 2020, All Saints Parish’s goal was $65,205.00. Our parish pledged $31,622 (or 48%). As of January 8, 2021, $29,689.00 was paid toward that pledge. Not every parish has met its goal, many have met it, and some others have exceeded. There were three parishes in the diocese that were at less than 50% of goal. Although the entire list of parishes is too lengthy to print, you can find it online at the link listed below if you are interested in reviewing the results. The table below shows a sampling of parishes: Some have goals similar ours, some are in our geographical area, some are smaller and some are larger. For a complete listing of all parishes in the diocese, please see this link: https://allsaintsberlin.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/41/2021/01/ACA-2020-results-as-of-Jan.-2021.pdf Our commitment weekend for the Annual Catholic Appeal is February 20 /21. At these Masses we will receive a message from our Bishop and view a summary of how the Annual Catholic Appeal helps people both Catholics and non-Catholics throughout the Madison Diocese. As with all needs and causes, please pray about it, and give as the Holy Spirit leads you. News and Announcements Diocese of Madison Annual Catholic Appeal 2021 “The Kingdom of God is at Hand” The theme for the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal of the Diocese of Madison is “The Kingdom of God is at Hand.” We ask that God guide us, and give us the ability to put our faith in Him to allow us the capacity to love and care for those in our parishes, our diocese and the Church throughout the world. We ask that His grace make us even more generous in supporting those needs. Each pledge to the Annual Catholic Appeal supports diocesan ministries, education and services and assures a strong future for the Diocese of Madison and the people that it serves. This year each of us is asked to consider making a pledge, payable over six months. Your gift will help enable the diocese to reach its goal and provide to the ministries supported by the appeal. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back. Be sure to include our parish name on your pledge card so your gift goes toward helping us reach our parish’s goal. News and Announcements TOMORROW’S DREAMS “BUILDING FOR TODAY’S NEEDS AND TOMORROW’S DREAMS” Does this sound and look familiar? It’s the slogan and hope of our past building projects. It’s hard to believe how far our parish has come in the past 15 years. Please keep in mind that no decisions of any kind have been made, but information is being collected and gathered from historical and past documentation. This past week, the Finance Council and Building & Grounds subcommittee were presented with a very rough, updated estimate of the previous preliminary plans for Phase III of our church complex. If you recall, these plans were proposed over 10 years ago during the initial capital campaign. The Third Phase of the complex outlined the vision of a parish school, gymnasium, and shared spaces for faith formation and religious education classes. The group was also presented with a preliminary estimate and very preliminary building plans for a renovation building project at the current school location. These are not hard bids and only being used currently to give a ballpark estimate to help weigh options, collect data and formulate a future plan for our school. As our current school ages and repairs are imminent, we as a parish need to evaluate our current and future needs and decide the best direction for our parish school and children. Where do we go from here? To help answer this question, your parish needs YOU! We are looking for parishioners who may have the background, knowledge and passion to participate on the Core Building Committee. The purpose of the Core Building Committee will include assisting with a study to research and analyze the presented information and help arrive at a potential plan and direction. The Finance Council and Building & Grounds subcommittee ask that all parishioners join them in praying for this group of knowledgeable individuals, the process, and the willingness to be open to God’s will for our future plans. All Saints continues to offer up prayers for the community, the nation, and indeed, for the whole world during this most challenging time. God bless each of you as you help each other and pray for one another during this most challenging time. We invite anyone (Catholic or not) to send us your prayer request that we may pray for you, a loved one, or anything that weighs heavily on your heart and mind. Father David will place them at the foot of the altar in the church, lifting them up to God in prayer. You may send your prayer requests through our All Saints Church app. To Download the app text: ALLSAINTSAPP to 77977 Once you download the app - go under Worship & Prayer, select Prayer Request and click on the Praying hands to start your prayer request.
