July 2019 Published by Neighbourhood Trust July 2019 . Vol 12, No 6 . Issue No 126 Contributions to: P O Box 21179 . Edgeware . Christchurch . 8143 . p 355-6522 . e themairehau@nht.org.nz End of an era It is with sadness within the community that Te Puna Oraka Early Years Services - the Shirley Hub closed on 26th June. The funding for the Shirley Hub ended a year ago, and despite best efforts there is not the funding to continue. Jo Waddingham (Manager) says, ‘While the Hub will no longer operate as a drop-in service, the Early Start Project continues to hold the lease for the building through to November 2020. They are still offering the space to community groups free of charge during this time to continue their community-based activities for whanau in the Shirley community, so some of the familiar activities at the hub will continue e.g. International Playgroup, Breastfeeding support and Music Bugs. After Te Puna Oraka closes I am happy to still have the opportunity to represent Early Start within the Shirley Village Project. Pictured from left to right Angeleen Keepa Jo Waddingham & Jan Egan This is an initiative which has the potential to create some awesome positive change, directed and lead by the people of Shirley, so will still get to connect with some of you through some of the great little projects happening in that space I know. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to get to know so many of you in the Shirley Community. Everything has it’s season, and this is where we are now for Te Puna Oraka Early Years Services Hub after 10 years of connecting with this community is very many ways with a vision of supporting the best possible start in life for families raising their tamariki in Shirley. Shirley is a community that benefits from the energy and commitment of those that live here, and while services may come and go this community spirit will remain and flourish. Wishing the families of Shirley all the very best in your parenting journeys.’ Editorial This July edition is touching on seasons of change with the Shirley Hub no longer hosting the Early Years services. Here at the Neighbourhood Trust we also have some sad news, our wonderful editor of 4 years Amber is finishing up in her role as editor. We are excited to be able to say she will still be part of our neighbourhood Trust Team in other ways in our community. We’d like take this opportunity to thank Amber for her passion for our community, building long lasting connections through her work on The Mairehau and for her strong drive to bring us inspirational and wonderful stories of happenings in our neighbourhood. God Bless, Trudy
