Welcome to Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church Twenty Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 19, 2021 ~ Our Mission Statement ~ We, the Roman Catholic Parish of Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, joyfully worship together to give praise, honor and glory to Almighty God. We are called by the Holy Spirit to proclaim and to live the gospel message through the sacraments and to spread the message of Jesus Christ by living out the example of God’s power in our lives. THE MEANING OF DISCIPLESHIP The geography of today’s Gospel is significant. Jesus is completing his ministry in Galilee and beginning his journey to Jerusalem, where he will meet both death and resurrection. The prediction of his death placed here is the second of three in Mark’s Gospel, and as usual it is the occasion for an important teaching on the part of Jesus. Today that lesson is tied to the need for his disci- ples to embrace a ministry of service. A play on words in Aramaic would have linked the words “child” and “servant,” thus turning Jesus’ gesture of placing a child in their midst into an illustration of his understanding of himself as the Servant of the Lord. It is that same aware- ness of the meaning of their ministry that Jesus (and Mark) wishes to instill in the disciples. Theirs must be a ministry of service if they are to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. And that service might even require of them that they be “handed over” to death. What would have been—in the culture of Jesus’ day—an ordinary discus- sion of social status (“who is the greatest”) becomes in Mark’s context a key insight into the meaning of disci- pleship for the disciples and for us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Adoration will be on Friday, October 1, af- ter the 8:00am Mass until 4:00pm.

Pastor’s Letter Dear brothers and sisters, Over the next few weeks and months—or, at least by the end of the year—I would like to get started on two major projects. The interior of the church will be getting a much-needed painting, and all of the kneelers will be either repaired, or replaced; it will be a lengthy process. I wanted to hold off on these projects, because the pandemic has taken a toll on our ordinary in- come—I’m sure you’ve noticed, by the tallies in the bulletins. However, it looks like this health cri- sis won’t end any time soon. So, we need to move forward with these projects. There will obviously be some disruption of Masses, but, considering all that we’ve been through at the height of the pandemic, we can handle anything! On another note, on the weekend of the 25th and 26th, we will have a second collection for the Dio- cese of Maiduguri, in Nigeria. We normally have a missionary priest come out—as is the tradi- tion every year—but, due to the pandemic, we will simply take up a second collection for that dio- cese. This will fulfill our annual missionary appeal, as required by the Diocese of Rockford. If you would like to read up on the Diocese of Maiduguri, you can visit the following website: https://nigeriacatholicnetwork.com/diocese/maiduguri-diocese. I will also have information about the diocese on the bookcases in church. Thank you and God bless. Father Patrick Please consult the bulletin for deadlines, if you would like something in the bulletin. The usual deadline for things in the bulletin is MONDAY, BY NOON, unless otherwise stated. Please send the item/article that you would like to see in the bulletin to Mary at annunciationbvm-aurora@rockforddiocese.org or mglosson@rockforddiocese.org. If it is a document, please make sure that it is created in Word. If it is a pic- ture, please make sure that it is in black and white. Also, if you would like something announced at any or all of the weekend Masses, please email Mary at annunciationbvm-aurora@rockforddiocese.org, or mglosson@rockforddiocese.org, no later than WEDNESDAY EVENING, BY 4:00PM. If you would like both an announcement and a bulletin item/article, please send two separate emails, one for the announce- ment, one for the bulletin item/article. Finally, if anyone needs to use the church, or the parish patio or basement, please call Mary for the availability of these areas.

Why did Christ institute the Sacraments of Penance and the Anointing of the Sick? Christ, the physician of our soul and body, instituted these sacraments because the new life that he gives us in the sacra- ments of Christian initiation can be weakened and even lost because of sin. Therefore, Christ willed that his Church should continue his work of healing and salvation by means of these two sacraments. The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation 296. Why is there a sacrament of Reconciliation after Baptism? Since the new life of grace received in Baptism does not abol- ish the weakness of human nature nor the inclination to sin (That is, concupiscence), Christ instituted this sacrament for the conversion of the baptized who have been separated from him by sin.

FEAST OF FAITH Doxology and Amen “Doxology” comes from a Greek word meaning “words of praise.” The Eucharistic Prayer ends with a doxology addressed to the triune God: “Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.” It is an exclamation of praise, honor, and glory to God, reminding us that we receive everything from God through the Son, in the power of the Spirit. At the consecration, the priest held up the host and then the chalice for us to see and adore. HELP WANTED – Annunciation Adult Choir! It’s been a long and lonely 18 months-worth of changes and alterations to our music program at Annunciation, but it looks like Our Lord has given us the opportunity to revive and improve our sacred music at Mass and other Liturgical events. We have a great core of helpful singers, some with extensive experience, others singing along-side these singers and all doing this for the greater honor and glory of God. To continue this, WE NEED YOUR HELP! After this much time off it is similar to starting anew. We are looking for additional members who have had at least some time with a choir in high school, church or beyond. The Choir is under the direction of Dick Gardner who has been Choir Director and Director of Music at Annunciation since 1972. He was mentored by Marian May who led the Choir and accompanied the congregation for 50+ years, and her mother and father before that. Is there some tradition here? Rehearsals begin Tuesday, September 21st at 7:00pm in the Church and continue every Tuesday for 60-to-90 minutes. Our first contribution to the Liturgy will be Sunday, October 3rd at the 10:00am Mass and every Sunday thereafter. Call Mary Glosson at the Rectory for information at (630) 851-1436, or Dick Gardner at (630) 851-8422. Please prayerfully consider committing some valuable time to making our music deepen our parish family’s response to the Liturgy, and Keep the Tradition of Music Alive at Annunciation!
