A MESSAGE FROM... B elief in Jesus Christ is the legacy that lasts! Dear St. James Community, On May 3rd of each year, St. James celebrates parishioners who have made a commitment to St. James School or Parish through a bequest or other future intention. For our second year in existence, the Living Legacy Society is grateful to the parishioners listed on the cover who have designated a legacy gift to this wonderful and vibrant parish. These parishioners are a leading example of support to ensure St. James thrives far into the future. Legacy gifting is a firm and final demonstration of your commitment to God and to St. James – your parish that has offered a family of faith and support throughout your lifetime. Legacy gifts provide satisfaction of leaving a lasting impact on a cause that is close to you. More practically, legacy gifts may be deductible from your taxable income, may assist in minimizing estate taxes, and may generate a payment stream for life. Gifts to the St. James operating funds, parish ministries, two school endowments, or to our tuition assistance program are areas that can benefit from your financial support. These gifts ensure promulgation of the faith and encourages the next generation of leaders in our parish and school. For more information on our Living Legacy Society and how you can designate a future gift to St. James Parish or School, please contact me in the parish office anytime. (jcohen@stjamesah.org | 224-345-7212) Thank you, always, for your generosity. All my very best, Julie Cohen Development Director
V O C AT I O N S Hello St. James, This is Deacon Mauricio, and I am writing this message with excitement and sadness. I am excited that I will be returning to the Las Vegas diocese (my home) upon completing my theological studies. It is also with sadness, since this will be my goodbye to St. James Parish. The weekend of April 24th-25th was my last at St. James. I will return to Las Vegas on May 2nd to complete my canonical retreat and finish getting ready for my priestly ordination. With god’s will and mercy, I will be ordained to the priesthood on June 3rd, 2021 at 6pm at Guardian Angel Cathedral. During this time, please keep me in your prayers and please also pray for my deacon brothers who are getting ready to become sharers in the priesthood of Christ. The ordination will be live-streamed on Facebook, and I will send more details as they become available. I can be honest and say that god has blessed me by sending me to St. James Catholic Church. During the 2019-2020 school year, god blessed me with the chance to help Edge and being able to learn how to minister to middle school teens. In the Fall of 2020, I had the blessing to be with Lifeteen and learn much more about how to minister to high school students. Since January, I have been serving as deacon at masses and have been able to be more involved in the parish with Adore and Baptisms. I feel so blessed that since I arrived at St. James, everyone has been really welcoming and has made me feel part of the St. James family. Thank you for all your love and care and support. Know that St. James will be in my prayers and may God always bless and protect every member of my St. James family. Blessings, Dcn. Mauricio Espino Diocese of Las Vegas/Mundelein Seminary R E L I G I O U S E D U C AT I O N Gospel Reflection for Kids May 2 – Fifth Sunday of Easter John 15:1-8: In today’s Gospel, Jesus calls himself the strong vine, and we are the branches of the vine. To be our best selves, the best persons God created us to be, we must remain on the vine, connected to the vine, gathering life from it. With Jesus’ help, we can do good things and be like him. What will you do this week?

M I N I ST RY SP O T L IG H T Meeting Mental Health With Grace May is Mental Health Awareness Month Spotlight: Anxiety All of us deal with anxiety at various times in our lives. However, the pandemic has caused an increase in those experiencing symptoms. Recent data from the Kaiser Family Foundation indicates that in January 2021, 41% of adults were reporting symptoms of anxiety and depression. Some symptoms of anxiety include: irritability, tension, fatigue, chest pain, shortness of breath, stomach aches, and headaches. You are not alone. Faith can be a powerful tool to help you cope with anxiety Treat anxiety symptoms as a signal to PRAY Focus on adding prayer vs trying to remove anxiety. "Dear Heavenly Father, my anxiety is consuming me. I feel powerless to stop it. The despair makes me feel helpless, trapped, and so alone. I know You are with me, but I can’t feel it over my anxiousness. Please help me know that you are with me. Quiet my anxious heart. Knowing You are near will bring me peace. I pray this in the name of your son, Jesus. Amen" Please CLICK HERE to check out our Mental Health Ministry webpage for resources, support and educational information about anxiety and much more. M I N I ST RY SP O T L IG H T Join the PPC We want you… to consider joining the Parish Pastoral Council We are seeking new members to help us be disciples and make disciples Have you ever thought: How are decisions made at St. James? How can I support my parish? How can I get to know the new pastor better? How can I share what my friends/pew-mates are telling me about the parish? Can I get involved and deepen my faith-life at the same time? If so, please consider joining the St. James Parish Pastoral Council (PPC). If you would like more information about applying, please contact Christine Avell or Paulette Schmidt at PPC@stjamesah.org. We look forward to hearing from you!
R E L I G I O U S E D U C AT I O N V O C AT I O N S On May 8th, Bishop Robert Casey will ordain our very own Johnny Burnett to the permanent diaconate. Johnny, along with his wife Susan, studied for four years at the Institute for Diaconal Studies, through the University of St. Mary of the Lake Seminary, in Mundelein, IL. This past year Johnny prepared for his ordination by serving as an Acolyte at several St. James liturgies, in addition to his assigned classwork. Johnny’s Mass of Thanksgiving will be May 15th at 5PM. Upon admittance to the Sacrament of Holy Orders, Johnny will have facul- ties to preside at Marriages, Baptisms, Committals, and Benediction, as well as to proclaim the holy gospel and to preach at mass. Although a Deacon is ordained for service to the Archdiocese, it is typical that newly ordained Deacons are assigned to serve at the parish that sponsored that Deacon through the formation program. Thankfully, Johnny will be assigned here to St. James. Please join me in congratulating Johnny & Susan for their tenacity in completing the diaconate formation program. We ask for the intercession of St. Stephen, the patron saint of Deacons, to watch over Johnny & Susan as they begin the next stage of their faith journey. -Deacon Matt Hahn
