6335 South Holly Street Centennial, Colorado 80121 303-779-1332 www.oflc.net June, 2015 Summer Reading: How to Meditate on the Word of God In one of my recent Bible studies I spoke about meditating on the Word of God. But what exactly does that mean? How does one meditate on a specific teaching of the Bible? Well, meditation is actually a blending of both Bible study and prayer. In 1535, Luther wrote a letter to a barber friend of his in which he outlined this type of contemplative method for prayer. Essentially the process is as follows… Take a passage of the Bible and as you read it ask three questions: 1) How does this show me something about God to praise? 2) How does this show me something about myself to confess? 3) How does this show me something I need to ask God for? The following is a more specific list of questions I have found helpful… How can I love and praise God on the basis of this? What do I see here that I can praise him for? How do I fail to realize this in my life? What wrong behavior, harmful emotions or attitudes result when I forget this? How can I thank Jesus as the ultimate answer to this sin or need of mine? How would I be different if this truth were powerfully real to me? After you have thought through these questions, write or type your insights down. Then go on to pray through what you have discovered to God directly. During this process, you might find yourself receiving a deeper sense of the reality of God. Sometimes, of course, you might not “feel” anything at all. Remember that Christ is always active and present in our life through the means of His Word and Sacraments – whether we feel it or not. There might be seasons in your life where Jesus feels very far away. But take heart Christian! If you miss Him that actually shows He is right there with you tugging at your heart and calling you to drink deeply from the riches of His Word. This summer find time to work on your daily rhythm of prayer and meditation. I pray that Christ will continue to bless you as you read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest His holy Word. To God alone be all the glory! Amen. Pastor Abel

Our Father Lutheran Church Page 4 2015 Women’s Retreat - Franciscan Center in Colorado Springs Almost 60 women gathered to connect with God and other women. Sarah Salzberg led a study entitled “Fill My Cup, Fill It UP!,” focusing on how God takes our cups and fills them with His love and grace, until they overflow to others. We experienced the hail of Colorado Springs three times in the 22 hours, but the wonderful experience totally made it worth enduring the bad weather. Our outreach focus this year was to gather 100 bras for a local women’s shelter.
