B LES S ING O F THE P ALMS A N D P ROCES S IONAL WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Please join in reading CALL TO WORSHIP aloud those parts of Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! the service printed Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! in bold. Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. PRAYER The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We praise and bless you, ever-living God, for the acts of love by which you redeem the world through Jesus Christ our Lord. This day he entered the holy city of Jerusalem and was proclaimed king by those who spread their garments and palm braches along his way. Let these branches be for us signs of his victory; and grant that we who carry them may follow him in the way of the cross, that, dying and rising with him, we may enter into your kingdom. Through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. PROCLAMATION OF THE ENTRANCE INTO JERUSALEM Matthew 21:1-11 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest! We strive more to extend our influence than to seek your kingdom. Forgive us, for saying one thing, while living another. Help us by your Spirit to walk in your way of the cross, that we would love God with all our heart, and our neighbors as ourselves. *SILENT PRAYER OF CONFESSION *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Lord, for Thy Tender Mercy’s Sake MORNING SONG The astoundingly *ASSURANCE OF PARDON good news of our reconciliation to God through Jesus *PASSING THE PEACE, LOVE, AND JOY OF CHRIST TO OTHERS Christ frees our The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. tongues to sing And also with you. mighty praise to God. Give thanks unto our gracious God, song, and sermon. Whose love endures forever; The Lord, our strength and song shall be, From whom no fault can sever. Sing mighty songs of victory, Both now and for eternity, For God will leave us never. 2. I shall not die, but I shall live, And sing God’s grace with elation; Though I deserve no more than death, God blesses me with salvation. The gate that should unyielding be Is open wide to welcome me, Give thanks and adoration! 3. Upon the stones the builders judged Imperfect, weak and tender, Now rest the corners of God’s house, Still unsurpassed in splendor. This is the day the Lord has made; God is my sun, and God my shade; Rejoice, and praise gladly render! -paraphrase by Michael Morgan (2010) GOSPEL READING: Matthew 27:11-31 *CONGREGATIONAL HYMN: Beneath the Cross of Jesus ST. CHRISTOPHER 1. Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand, the shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land; a home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way, from the burning of the noontide heat, and the burden of the day. 2. Upon the cross of Jesus mine eye at times can see the very dying form of One who suffered there for me; and from my stricken heart with tears two wonders I confess: the wonders of redeeming love and my unworthiness.
GOSPEL READING: Matthew 27:32-44 The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON: “Jesus, How Much Do You Care?” Dr. Ron Shive R ES P O NDING TO T HE W O RD *CONGREGATIONAL HYMN: Beneath the Cross of Jesus ST. CHRISTOPHER 3. I take, O cross, thy shadow for my abiding place; I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of his face; content to let the world go by, to know no gain or loss, Our response to my sinful self my only shame, hearing God’s my glory all the cross. Word includes singing and saying *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH - from A Declaration of Faith what we believe. Religious leaders hated Jesus because he criticized their hypocrisy and reproved their neglect of justice and mercy. They charged him with blasphemy and sedition when he claimed to speak and act with God’s authority. One of Jesus’ followers betrayed him. Others abandoned and denied him because they were afraid to stand with him. Civil authorities condemned him because he provoked unrest among the people. He was sentenced, mocked, beaten, and crucified as a common criminal. We confess that in the execution of Jesus the sin of the human race reached its depths. The only innocent one was condemned and put to death, not by the sinfulness of one nation, but by the sinfulness of us all. In the presence of Jesus, who lived out what God wants us all to be, we were threatened beyond endurance. Blinded by our rebellion against our Creator, we killed his Son when we met him face to face. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Lord, when we pity ourselves and think we make great sacrifices for others: remind us of your life-giving sacrifice on the Cross. Lord, when our patience wears thin and we are ready to give up: speak to us through the example of your endurance on the Cross.
Lord, when we get angry and wish to retaliate against our enemies: bring to our remembrance your words to your enemies from the Cross. Lord, when we feel rejected or persecuted for doing what is right and good: sustain us by the knowledge of how you were reviled and rejected on the Cross. Lord, when we suffer pain of body or anguish of mind in this life: keep us near the Cross. Lord, when we are afraid to stand for that which is true and honorable: strengthen us with the courage with which you went to the Cross. Lord, when we feel alone in the world, forsaken and forgotten: comfort us with your love made known on the Cross. Lord, when we come to the time of our own death: uphold us with the assurance that life did not end for you on the Cross. Lord, when we are tempted by despair or fear of what lies ahead: fill us with the hope of resurrection and new life which are the fruits of your Cross. (Silent Prayer) LORD’S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. MUSIC AT THE OFFERTORY O Sacred Head, Now Wounded Jean Langlais (1907-1991) O sacred head, now wounded, What thou, my Lord, hast suffered with grief and shame weighed down; was all for sinners’ gain: now scornfully surrounded mine, mine was the transgression, with thorns, thine only crown; but thine the deadly pain. O sacred head, what glory, Lo, here I fall, my Savior! what bliss till now was thine! ’Tis I deserve thy place; Yet, though despised and gory, look on me with thy favor, I joy to call thee mine. and grant to me thy grace. What language shall I borrow to thank thee, dearest friend, for this thy dying sorrow, thy pity without end? O make me thine forever; and should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to thee. *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow (Doxology) OLD HUNDREDTH BEARING THE WORD INTO THE WORLD *CHARGE AND BENEDICTION God blesses and *CONGREGATIONAL HYMN – NO. 215 sends us in What Wondrous Love Is This WONDROUS LOVE mission to the (Text and Tune are printed on page 12) world. Holy Week In-Person Worship Services have been replaced with Online Worship and Worship via Facebook LIVE Seven Deadly Sins—Lenten Wednesday Worship - 11:30 a.m.— Online Worship — Wednesday, April 8—Sloth—Ron Shive During the season of Lent, a worship service will be held each Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. This worship service will be available via Faceboook LIVE (https://www.facebook.com/fpcburlington/) and will also be offered via live video streaming (www.fpcburlington.org). These 30-minute services will be led by clergy within our congregation and staff, and will include hymns, prayers, scripture, and a homily. Worship each week will focus on one of seven deadly sins. This classification of sins originated with the desert fathers of the 3rd and 4th Century, especially Evagrius Ponticus, a monk and ascetic, and one of the most influential theologi- ans in the late 4th Century church. Each of these sins misses the mark of God’s intentions for us. During this Lenten season, we will seek to redirect our lives in new ways. We hope you will make this a part of your Lenten discipline this year. Maundy Thursday and Tenebrae Service – Noon – Online Worship – Thursday, April 9 Our service will be during the day this year. We will conclude our Lenten series on The Seven Deadly Sins and focus on anger. We will close this service with tenebrae, meaning “shadows,” an ancient tradition in which light fades into darkness. Join us for worship service either on Facebook LIVE or on the website at www.fpcburlington.org. How and when did our ancestors first became religious? How do we define that? And how did those first glimmerings, through all manner of twists and turns, lead to an articulate, thoughtful faith (well, for some of us)? Dr. Moore is no stranger to us here at First Presbyterian Church. He served as Interim Head of Staff at FPC during Dr. Shive's first sabbatical. Ed is a United Methodist clergy who served as District Superintendent in the Baltimore-Washington Conference and a number of churches in Maryland prior to that. He has a Ph.D. in the History of American Christianity from George Washington University and has served as a professor at Duke Divinity School, Elon University, and the University of North Georgia. He and his wife, Mary Gowan, used to live in Burlington and participate with us regularly in worship and educational classes. They currently live in North Georgia and often worship with us online. This class will meet on Zoom. If you are interested in participating, email Kathleen Seagroves and she will send you a link to the Zoom Class.
