The way up From the river Lahn via the historic old town to the castle: that's 100 meters of altitude gain, two elevators with views over the city and 400 steps. A bit of advice from the Lord Mayor Dr Thomas Spies The university town of Marburg is presents like a history book written over the centuries. And right in the middle of the historic market square stands the representative town hall [6] – as the centre of social, cultural and political life. For more than 400 years, the same amusing show has been performed every hour on the hour: on the Renaissance gable of the town hall, the rooster raises its wings to the rasping- tinny sound of the messenger’s trumpet call.

Elisabeth church The church’s construction, which is the earliest example of purely Gothic hall church on German soil, began in 1235, the year of the canonisation of Elisabeth of Thuringia. The church, built by the Teutonic Order above the tomb of St Elisabeth, was consecrated in 1283 and became an important place of pilgrimage in the late Middle Ages. To this day, the Evangelical community church is an prominent monument of religious architectural creativity and the destination of 10,000 visitors a year. Besides the tomb of the Landgraves of Hesse, the golden shrine to Elisabeth richly decorated with precious stones is impressive. The stained glass windows depicts the life of St Elisabeth and her acts of charity, and represent some of the most important examples of Gothic stained glass art. Castle of the Landgrave Dominating the landscape, the primary residence of Hesse’s Landgraves was built as a fortification on the so-called Gisonen rock. Its first beginnings date back to around 1000, making the castle of the Landgrave one of the earliest hill castles in Germany and the starting point for Marburg's development. Castle of the Landgrave, princely residence, fortress - the Gothic and late-Gothic complex with Renaissance annexes represents a unique, multi-faceted history. The casements, located at the castle´s moat and park, are also testaments to this. An important part of the castle that is now owned by the university houses the Museum of Cultural History with its collections on the pre- and early history of Hesse, religious art and town life among others. In summer, the beautiful castle park, the city festival "3 Tage Mar- burg" and the open-air cinema on the castle park stage attract both locals and visitors. The historic Judiciary Cottage is home to the Bistro “Schlosscafé” with an outdoor terrace in the middle of the rose garden. The former synagogue (built between 1895 and 1897 according to plans by architect Wilhelm Spahr) was destroyed by arsonduring the Night of Broken Glass on 9 November 1938. A tactile model of the former synagogue, glass panels afford a glimpse of the relics of the building and note boxes in the lawn make the visit a lasting experience. Universitätsstraße public access
