Welcome to the University
    town of Marburg
DISCOVER Marburg - the title says it all: this brochure contains
everything from attractions to leisure activities to a city map - all
you need to help you plan before and during your visit to Marburg.
The pictures are marked with letters a and numbers 1 , both
are mentioned in the text. Numbers are also assigned to the places
worth seeing on the final suggested city walk.

If you have any questions, suggestions or requests, please contact
the team at Marburg Stadt und Land Tourismus GmbH (MSLT). See
    back for contact details.

        The way up
From the river Lahn via the historic old town to the castle: that's
100 meters of altitude gain, two elevators with views over the
city and 400 steps. Even the Brothers Grimm joked that there are
"more stairs on the streets than in the houses” in Marburg.

A bit of advice from the
Lord Mayor Dr Thomas Spies
The university town of Marburg is presents like a history book
written over the centuries. And right in the middle of the
historic market square stands the representative town hall [6]
– as the centre of social, cultural and political life.
For more than 400 years, the same amusing show has been
performed every hour on the hour: on the Renaissance gable
of the town hall, the rooster raises its wings to the rasping-
tinny sound of the messenger’s trumpet call.

Elisabeth church
The church’s construction, which is the earliest example of purely
Gothic hall church on German soil, began in 1235, the year of the
canonisation of Elisabeth of Thuringia. The church, built by the
Teutonic Order above the tomb of St Elisabeth, was consecrated
in 1283 and became an important place of pilgrimage in the late
Middle Ages. To this day, the Evangelical community church is an
prominent monument of religious architectural creativity and the
destination of 10,000 visitors a year.
Besides the tomb of the Landgraves of Hesse, the golden shrine
to Elisabeth richly decorated with precious stones is impressive.
The stained glass windows depicts the life of St Elisabeth and
her acts of charity, and represent some of the most important
examples of Gothic stained glass art.

Castle of the Landgrave
Dominating the landscape, the primary residence of Hesse’s
Landgraves was built as a fortification on the so-called Gisonen
rock. Its first beginnings date back to around 1000, making the
castle of the Landgrave one of the earliest hill castles in Germany
and the starting point for Marburg's development.
Castle of the Landgrave, princely residence, fortress - the Gothic
and late-Gothic complex with Renaissance annexes represents
a unique, multi-faceted history. The casements, located at the
castle´s moat and park, are also testaments to this. An important
part of the castle that is now owned by the university houses the
Museum of Cultural History with its collections on the pre- and
early history of Hesse, religious art and town life among others.
In summer, the beautiful castle park, the city festival "3 Tage Mar-
burg" and the open-air cinema on the castle park stage
    attract both locals and visitors.

The casemates – underground gun emplacements – form the
centre piece of the former fortifications around the castle of the
Landgrave. This includes the first gun turret from 1478, which is
known today as the "Hexenturm”, Witch Tower, because of its later
    use as a prison.

     Philipp University of Marburg
Founded in 1527 by Landgrave Philipp the Magnanimous and
thus the world's first Protestant university, Philipp University
of Marburg has shaped the life of the city, with around 26,300
students today. As a classical full university, Philipp University
offers more than 100 paths of study. The departments of natural
sciences and medicine are mainly located on the hill “Lahnberge”
with the other specialist areas being spread throughout the city.
The new university library [18] was opened in 2018 on the new
campus area around the Old Botanical garden [19].
The old university [6] was built between 1873-91 by Carl
Schäfer in a neo-Gothic style on the foundations of the Dominican
monastery from the late 13th century. The old auditorium [6],
found in the old university, offers a unique insight into the history
of the university city of Marburg with its large historical paintings
     by Peter Janssen.

Castle park [12]
The Castle park lies at the highest point of Marburg's old town –
even higher than the castle courtyard itself. The castle park
with its biodiverse rose garden is Marburg's largest park and is
probably one of themost beautiful in the citydue to its spacious-
ness and diverse design . The historic Judiciary Cottage is home
to the Bistro “Schlosscafé” with an outdoor terrace in the middle
of the rose garden. In summer, the open-air stage in the castle
park hosts major events such as the "3 Tage Marburg" city
festival, concerts and open-air cinema.

Memorial garden [8]
The memorial garden was established in 2013 as a memorial to
the former Synagogue in Marburg. The former synagogue (built
between 1895 and 1897 according to plans by architect Wilhelm
Spahr) was destroyed by arsonduring the Night of Broken Glass
on 9 November 1938. A tactile model of the former synagogue,
glass panels afford a glimpse of the relics of the building and
note boxes in the lawn make the visit a lasting experience.
