Welcome to the University Town of Marburg Discover Marburg – the name already says it all: From sightseeing and leisure activities, right up to a city map, you will find everything in this booklet, which will accompany you, comprehensively and informatively, when visiting us and planning your your visit to Marburg. The city walk, which is proposed at the end, refers to the numbers mentioned in the text, thereby leading you to the various points of interest in the university town. Should you have any questions, suggestions or requests, please do not hesitate to contact the team at Marburg Stadt und Land Tourismus GmbH (MSLT). For contact see reverse. The way to the top From the Lahn river, through the historical old town and up to the castle: That's 100 m elevation, two upper town lifts and 400 step. Even the Brothers Grimm joked that in Marburg, there are "more steps on the streets than in the houses". 2 INTRO AND CONTENT

Tip by the lord mayor Dr Thomas Spies The university town of Marburg is like a history book written over the course of the centuries. And right in the middle of the historic market square, you will find the representative town hall [6] – as the centre of social, cultural and political life. For more than 400 years now, the amusing spectacle can be seen and heard here every hour, on the hour: The cock raises its wings to the croaking tin trumpet signal of the messenger on the Renaissance gable of the town hall.
33 8 Historical old town Lovely alleyways and winding steps, perfectly-renovated half-tim- bered houses and venerable churches – Marburg's old town invites you to take a stroll, linger for a while and enjoy yourself. Elisabeth church The construction of this earliest, completely Gothic, hall church on German soil began in the year of the canonization of Elisabeth of Thuringia (1235). The church, which was built by the Teutonic Order above the tomb of Saint Elisabeth, was consecrated in 1283 and became an important place of pilgrimage in the late Middle Ages. To this very day, the protestant parish church is an outstanding monument of religious architecture and the destina- tion of many tens of thousands visitors every year. Apart from the tomb of the Hessian landgraves, the golden Elisabeth shrine, which is richly decorated with precious stones, is also impressive. The stained glass windows show the life of Saint Elisabeth and her works of mercy and are considered among the most significant examples of Gothic glass work. Castle of the Landgrave The founding residence of the Hessian landgrave house was built as a landscape crowning spur castle on the so-called Gisonen rock. The early stages date back to about 1000, making the castle of the Landgrave one of the earliest high-altitude castles in Ger- many and marking the starting point for Marburg's development. Castle of the Landgrave, princely residence, fortress – the Gothic and late Gothic complex with Renaissance annexes represents a unique, multi-faceted history. An important part of the castle, which is now owned by the university, houses the Museum of Cul- tural History, with collections on the prehistory and early history of Hesse, religious art and bourgeois urban living. In summer, the beautiful castle park, the town festival "3 Tage Marburg" and the open-air cinema on the castle park stage are attractions for locals and visitors alike. Natural sciences and medicine are mainly located on the hills “Lahnberge”, while the other faculties are located in the city. The new university library [17] was opened in 2018 on the new campus area surrounding the Old Botanical garden [18] . Between 1873-91, the old university [5] was built by Carl Schäfer in neo-Gothic style on the foundations of the Dominican monastery, dating back to the late 13th century. The old auditorium [20] in this building, with its large-format historical paintings by Peter Janssen, offers a unique insight into the history of the university town of Marburg. 7 11 25 Castle park [11] The park is located at the highest point of Marburg's old town – even higher than the castle courtyard itself. The castle park, with its species-rich rose garden is Marburg's largest park, and is probably one of the most beautiful in town, thanks to its spaciousness and variety of designs. The historic Judiciary cottage house is home to bistro “Schlosscafe”, with an out- door terrace in the heart of the rose garden. In summer, the open-air stage in the castle park hosts major events, such as the "3 Tage Marburg" city festival and open-air cinema. Gisonenweg, Bistro Schlossparkcafé: Tel. +49 (0) 6421 931340 Easter - middle of October Saturday/Sunday 2 - 6 pm (depending on the weather and by arrangement) Memorial garden [7] The memorial garden was established in 2013, as a memorial reminding of the former synagogue in Marburg. The former synagogue (built between 1895 and 1897 according to plans of architect Wilhelm Spahr) was destroyed by arson during the Night of the Broken Glass on 9 November 1938. A tactile model of the former synagogue, glass plate covers providing a view of the building relics, and note boxes in the lawn area are sure to turn the visit into an experience you won't forget.
