What’s New for 2021 Fire College? • Due to COVID-19 restrictions in place at the time of print we have reduced the number of classes that we will be offering. Class sizes may be limited, we urge you to register early. • We will be holding classes on our main campus in Pinehurst, at the Larry Caddell Public Safety Training Center in Carthage, and local Fire Departments. • In an effort to reduce social gatherings, meals will not be provided during this event. All meals will be on your own. • No registration fee to attend this year’s event. We will make every effort to maintain a safe learning environment for students, instructors, and staff. Safety protocols will be managed in alignment with college guidelines to date in January. Registration Information 1. Review the registration and course information. 2. SPECIALTY & FORESTRY CLASSES NC Rapid Intervention Crew (24) Thursday 8:00a-5:00p, Friday 8:00a-5:00p, FIP 6412 Saturday 8:00a-5:00p Equipment: Full PPE with SCBA and Spare Bottle This course will present the Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC) candidate with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to satisfy the require- ments of NFPA 1407: Standard for Training Fire Service Rapid Intervention Crews (2020 edition). The course is designed to show the complexities of managing and operating on a Rapid Intervention Crew. Public Safety Diver with Tender(20) Friday 6:00p-10:00p, Saturday 8:00a-7:00p, Sunday 8:00a-2:00p Equipment: provided by instructor This course will put the diver in stressful diving situations that they must overcome in the everyday operations of public safety diving operations. The course is designed to have the diver put in situations that he/she will have to maneuver through to perform his/her duty. The Course will have the diver work out through entanglement situations, equipment problems and overcome mental situations. The diver will demonstrate the proper use of all Public Safety diving equipment needed to complete skills. Open Water Dive certification required for public safety diver (ERDI1). No prerequisites for Tender certification. The diver and tender will have to perform several different types of search patterns. The ERDI Full Face Mask Course Manual provides the student with the skills and knowledge for the ERDI diver to utilize full face masks for emergency response diving. This course is designed to intro- duce the public safety diver to the issues, concerns and strategies necessary to dive a full face mask in a public safety diving opera- tions setting. For the Emergency Response Diver, full face masks offer several distinct advantages over traditional second stage regulator assemblies, and in some cases, its use is required in environments such as contaminated water. *This is the same manual that is used for SDI Full Face Mask Diver. Wildland Fire Suppression (13) Saturday 8:00a-5:00p, Sunday 8:00a-1:00p FIP 4001 Equipment: full PPE This course is designed for the rural fire department firefighter as a supplement to his/her regular training program as outlined in NFPA pamphlet 1001. This course is designed for both the firefighter with little experience and the firefighter with experience in wildland fires, who are not full-time wildland firefighters and are limited to small unit initial attack units. This course was devel- oped by the N.C. Forest Service to teach fire personnel the basic knowledge needed to safely suppress wildland fires. The course covers organization, fire behavior, locating the fire, fire size-up, tactics for hand crews, engines, and tractor-plow units. Mop-up, fire prevention, and firefighter safety are also covered, as well as the different terrain and fire environments that forces may en- counter in NC. Working The Pin Job (12) NEW Saturday 8:00a-5:00p, Sunday 8:00a-12:00p Equipment: full PPE, helmet, gloves This class, taught by Toranze Lee, will help all skill levels, from the rookie on the job to the most season veteran. We will focus on what to do as we are responding to the call, scene size up after we arrive and many different tactics to help free our patients. We will go over when, why, and how to move vehicles to help with the extrication. We will also review proper tool techniques and ICS on a pin job. Priority registration deadline is January 15th. COMPANY OFFICER CERTIFICATION CLASSES Fire Chiefs 101 (8) Saturday 8:00a-5:00p FIP 3716 Equipment: none required This course is designed to apprise chief officers of the various aspects and complexities surrounding the operations and organiza- tion of North Carolina Fire departments. Emphasis will be placed on ratings and inspections, NFIRS reporting, prevention and relief funds, grant programs, basic line of duty death information, various state associations, and an overview of chief officer expecta- tions in North Carolina. This class will satisfy the 9S insurance inspection criteria as specified by the North Carolina Administrative Code. Fire Chiefs 101 Update (4) Saturday 8:00a-12:00p FIP 3717 Equipment: none required This course is designed as an update to the Fire Chief 101 Course. Course content is revised on a five-year cycle so that chief offic- ers receive the most relevant and current information available. This is the current Chief 101 update course approved by the NC Fire and Rescue Commission to meet NC Administrative Code requirements for those who have previously taken the Chief 101 course. Course content, which is revised at least every five years, must align with the currently approved update course managed by the NC Department of Insurance Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM), and instructors must be specifically approved. INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION CLASSES Indoctrination Class (6) Thursday 9:00a-4:00p Equipment: none required The primary objective of the course is to inform current and future instructors of the background of training standards and to relay clear communication of expectations as a qualified instructor for NCOSFM. The course will cover Q-School and policy for testing. This course is a prerequisite for any Level II Instructor to register for Q-School effective July 1, 2016. TECHNICAL RESCUER CERTIFICATION CLASSES TR Fixed Ropes (12) Thursday 8:00a-5:00p, Friday 8:00a-12:00p FIP 6503 Equipment: helmet & rope gloves This course in fixed rope systems will present the Technical Rescuer (TR) with the correct techniques for the setup, operation, and function of fixed rope systems used during rope rescue incidents. TR Lowers and Raises (12) Friday 1:00p-5:00p, Saturday 8:00a-5:00p FIP 6507 Equipment: helmet & rope gloves This course in lowers and raises will present the Technical Rescuer (TR) with the correct techniques for the setup, operation, and function of various types of high angle raising and lowering operations involving litters during a rope rescue incident. TR Personal Protective Equipment (9) Thursday 8:00a-6:00p FIP 6508 Equipment: helmet & rope gloves This course in personal protective equipment (PPE) will introduce to the Technical Rescuer (TR) the need for and use of PPE to ena- ble the rescuer to perform his/her duties in a safe and responsible manner. Physical characteristics of rescuers, stress, endurance, and the limitations of equipment will be discussed. TR Rescue Ops (12) Wednesday 8:00a-5:00p, Thursday 8:00a-12:00p FIP 6501 Equipment: helmet & rope gloves This course in rescue operations will present the Technical Rescuer (TR) with the requirements for pre-planning, scene size-up, and hazards assessment for incidents involving rope rescue. This course will also introduce the Technical Rescuer to applicable stand- ards addressing rope rescue, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), accessory gear, rope software, and rope hardware. TR Victim Management (15) Friday 7:00p-10:00p, Saturday 8:00a-5:00p, FIP 6511 Sunday 8a-12p Equipment: helmet & rope gloves This course in victim management will offer the Technical Rescuer (TR) practical applications for correctly gaining access to, stabiliz- ing the environment, packaging, and removing patients for a ropes rescue incident. All the elements of anchors, fixed rope systems, lowers and raises, and high lines are employed. TR VR Rescue Ops (8) Friday 8:00a-5:00p FIP 5711 Equipment: none required This course in rescue operations for vehicle rescue will present the Technical Rescuer (TR) with the hazards of vehicle rescue opera- tions, ICS, access, disentanglement, extrication, and the post rescue phases of vehicle rescue. TR VR Stabilization & Extrication (12) Friday 6:00p-10:00p, Saturday 8:00a-5:00p FIP 5713 Equipment: full PPE This course in stabilization and extrication techniques will present the Technical Rescuer (TR) the steps to stabilize a vehicle on four wheels, a side-resting vehicle, and a roof-resting vehicle. The Technical Rescuer will also be introduced to procedures for the fol- lowing: opening a jammed door using a hinge attack and a latch attack, creating a third door, total door removal, sidewall removal, working with a collapsed roof, creating the roof flap, C-B-A roof pillar cut, procedures for total roof removal, trunk tunneling, through the floor access, displacing a steering column, dash roll, removal and/or relocation of pedals, and removing and/or relo- cating seats. TR VR Victim Management (12) Friday 6:00p-10:00p, Saturday 8:00a-5:00p FIP 5715 Equipment: full PPE This course in victim management will present the Technical Rescuer (TR) with proper methods for the movement of patients from a hazardous situation while focusing on the safety and well-being of the patients and rescuers. Stabilizing the situation, gaining ac- cess, packaging, and removal patients from vehicle rescue incidents will be emphasized in this course. 10
NFA CLASSES Fire Investigation for First Responder (12) NFA Certification Friday 6:00-10:00p, Saturday 8:00a-5:00p Equipment: none required This course covers a basic overview of a fire investigation for the first responder. Students will participate in a live lecture that will review the basics of fire chemistry and develop an understanding of the role of the first responder in relation to fire suppression and fire investigation. This course also stresses the importance of fire scene awareness, evidence identification, preservation and the basics of a fire investigation. Students will develop an appreciation of the convergence of suppression, investigation, science and law. Decision Making for Initial Company Operations DMICO (15) NFA Certification Friday 7:00-10:00p, Saturday 8:00a-5:00p, Sunday 8:00a-12:00p Equipment: none required This course is designed to develop the decision-making skills needed by Company Officers (COs) to accomplish assigned tactics at structure fires. All activities and scenarios used in this course are based on structure fires. With the real possibility of being the first to arrive at an incident, the CO’s initial decisions will have an impact throughout the entire incident. It is vital that COs be able to make good management decisions that have a favorable impact on the eventual outcome. Preparation for Initial Company Operations PICO (15) NFA Certification Friday 7:00-10:00p, Saturday 8:00a-5:00p, Sunday 8:00a-12:00p Equipment: none required This course is designed to develop a better understanding of the role and responsibilities of Company Officers (COs) in preparing their company for incident operations and to clarify the transition from firefighter to CO and the new roles relating to leadership and safety. Strategy & Tactics for Initial Company Operations STICO (15) NFA Certification Friday 7:00-10:00p, Saturday 8:00a-5:00p, Sunday 8:00a-12:00p Equipment: none required This two-day course is designed to meet the needs of Company Officers (COs) responsible for managing the operations of one or more companies during structural firefighting operations. This course is designed to develop the management skills needed by COs to accomplish assigned tactics at structure fires.
