As we begin our Lenten journey, I am mindful of the ways in which our lives continue to feel disconnected, with our relationships lacking the kind of closeness we are used to. But this Holy season offers us an alternative, a way of journeying together that is deeply intentional and aware of the subtle movements of the Spirit within and around us. Throughout Lent we will be lifting up “The Way of the Cross” or the “Stations of the Cross” through the use of our five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. The devotional practice of the “Way of the Cross,” goes back to the earliest centuries of the church. Early Christians or “Followers of the Way” wanted to walk the land where Jesus lived and trace his path from the Garden of Gethsemane to the Cross at Golgatha. During these early pilgrimages, faithful individuals reflected on the life of Christ and the sufferings of our Lord. This led to the ritual devotion of walking the Way of the Cross through selected passages of Scripture. During our Lenten journey, we will experience nine stations found in the Gospel accounts. On each Sunday during Lent, we will re-create one of the stations in our own homes using one of the five senses. Stations will also be set up in the sanctuary for you to visit as a weekly Spiritual practice. As we sense our way to the Cross, might we each gain a more personal and visceral connection to the journey that Christ took to the Cross. And may our senses be awakened to the reality of God’s grace in our lives! Blessings, Pastor Lynn 1

MISSION AND SOCIAL JUSTICE REPORT Presented at February Council Meeting by Teresa Barensfeld Faithful Responses to Racial Injustice group – open to all in the congregation. Last summer and fall, we met via Zoom every two weeks; we are currently not meeting regularly, but are planning to resume Zoom meetings soon. We have been in fruitful discussions via email, exploring next steps for the group, what resources we want to explore, reaching out to the congregation, and other topics. We are planning to show a documentary about Howard Thurman, Backs Against The Wall: The Howard Thurman Story.* This overlaps with Christian Education, and that aspect is being explored. We are working on finding a way to air it remotely so everyone can view it, and I believe we have found a solution regarding licensing. We’ll update the congregation when we know more. We don’t have a chairperson, and I am thinking I will suggest to the group that we might want to have a chair or cochairs. I am the “zoom master, ” but do not chair (nor do I want to chair) the meetings. Responding to “continued need for reflection and leadership surrounding racial justice”: The Faithful Responses group has used the newsletter, but not enough. The pandemic has complicated communication, especially about a difficult subject, but that just means we have to work harder at this challenge and look at different ways of communicating. I have recently started working with two groups that I believe will help me to learn more and in more depth, hopefully find new ways to discuss and explore racial justice, and to bring what I learn to St. Peter’s: The Albany Presbytery’s new Anti-Racism Task Force (first meeting to be scheduled) and the Chatham Area Interfaith Council’s new Interfaith Anti-Racism Group (first meeting was two weeks ago). In the latter group, we are reading Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man by Emmanuel Acho (Flatiron Books, 2020). (Acho also has a series of YouTube videos with the same theme). A little background: Last summer, I participated in the Albany Presbytery’s study group, using the book White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo, and a Chatham-based interfaith study group on the book How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi (which had participants both near and far). All of the above groups met/meet remotely via Zoom. At the national, PC(USA), level, I am researching resources that we could use here at St. Peter’s. https://www.pcusa.org/racial-justice-resources/ https://www.pcusa.org/bearingwitness/ *Howard Thurman (1899–1981) “played a leading role in many social justice movements and organizations of the twentieth century. He was one of the principal architects of the modern, nonviolent civil rights movement and a key mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” https://www.bu.edu/htpp/thurman/ (Boston University website) Please join us as we continue to deepen our commitment to racial injustice! Please email Teresa Barensfeld at tbarensfeld@gmail.com if you have educational resources to share or would like to join our “Faithful Responses” Zoom discussion group. Please email Pastor Lynn at lynnmhoran@gmail.com for further conversation, prayer and discernment on issues of racial justice. 10
