General News 7 10 Charity 18 School Tours 2020 Finance 21 22 Sport and Culture 24 Classifieds 25 Dear Parents, The Minister of Basic Education has launched an advocacy campaign to end gender based violence in schools. I have recently addressed the learners in the School Assemblies on this topic. I have used general bullying as a point of departure and have discussed types of violence linking it to-what you say to someone, what you do to someone with your words and actions and how it makes you feel. Learners were addressed on the importance of respect. Respect in the classroom towards other learners, whether it be boys or girls, as well as their teachers and the family members at home. They were reminded that boys hurting girls when they are young can become men hurting women when they grow older and the implications and seriousness of this. We will again address this at upcoming Assemblies where respectful relationships and what they should do about violence will also be discussed. We request that parents continue this discussion at home and also model the correct example to the children. A reminder to our parents that school starts at 07:30 and closes at 13:40. Please drop off and collect your child on time. On Monday, 24 February 2020, Mr Pretorius welcomed the following new staff members to Glenstantia Primary School. We trust that you already feel part of our Glenstantia family. Ms Debra Sithole (Learnership) Ms Nokwanda Nkosi (Learnership) Ms Kgaugelo Hlangwini (FP Intern) Ms Saajidah Sayanvala (ISP Intern) 1
Thank you to our parents who attended the School Governing Body By-elections on Monday and Tuesday evening. We congratulate the following parents who were elected onto the School Governing Body: Mr EL King Ms N Matima Mr RS Motang It is a concern that very few parents arrived for the 1st and 2nd SGB By-elections earlier this week. Parents have a responsibility towards their child/dren and the school to attend SGB events like Elections and Budget Meetings, as this is the forum where you, as a parent has the opportunity to decide who governs the school and how the budget is spent. Parents were notified well in advance of the By-election via emails, sms’s, the School Communicator and the Newsletter. Thank you to the many parents who replied and voluntered to be a class representative. Class Representatives are a crucial part of the PA and unfortunately we don’t have one per class. We are asking the parents again to please volunteer. Please send your name, cell number, e-mail address with your child’s name and class to pa@glenstantia.co.za./ estelle@erapta.co.za Good luck to our swimming team who will be participating in the Inter-School Gala at Midstream Ridge Primary on Wednesday, 4 March 2020. We wish them well and trust that their hard work will pay off. Thank you to our dedicated teachers and coach who train our swimmers for this big event. We are in the process of sending out several surveys using the SOGO SURVEY TOOL to our parents regarding school related matters / decisions. We urge you to please participate in these surveys – remember your answers are anonymous. Yours sincerely Mr HPJ Pretorius PRINCIPAL 2

Academics PARENT AND TEACHER INVOLVEMENT What’s the most accurate predictor of academic achievement? It’s not socioeconomic status, nor how prestigious the school is that a child attends. The best predictor of student success is the extent to which families encourage learning at home and involve themselves in their child’s education. When parents are engaged in their children’s school lives, students have the home support and knowledge they need to not only finish their assignments, but also develop a lifelong love of learning. Teachers who focus on parent engagement often see a profound change in their classrooms. The more parents involved in their children’s education, the better their entire class’s motivation, behaviour, and grades become. What is Parent Engagement? Parent engagement happens when teachers involve parents in school meetings or events, and parents volunteer their support at home and at school. In this way, they make a commitment. Parents commit to prioritizing their child’s educational goals, and teachers commit to listening and providing a space for collaboration with parents. Parent engagement in schools is different from parent involvement, though both are useful. Parent involvement is when parents participate in school events or activities, and teachers provide learning resources or information about their student’s grades. Unlike in parent engagement, teachers hold the primary responsibility to set educational goals. They relate to parents not as a partner but an advisor who guides them through academic support for their child. Why Parent Involvement is Important Parents now prefer remote methods of communication, like online student portals, and they are less likely to attend parent-teacher conferences or school activities. This shift is sudden and concerning due to what it means for parent engagement. While digital 4
tools can help families stay informed, students are missing out when parents don’t offer their time and support. When parents and teachers work together to establish a thriving classroom, the effect on their students is profound. Students with engaged parents don’t just have high test scores: their attendance, self-esteem, and graduation rate rise, too. Parent-teacher relationships are more than an optional classroom benefit. They are key for helping students on a personal and classroom level reach their academic potential. If we as educators don’t make a space for parent partnerships in our schools, we’re limiting our classroom’s capacity for growth. Parent Engagement and Student Success Children with engaged parents are more likely to: Earn higher grades or test scores Graduate from high school and attend post-secondary education Develop self-confidence and motivation in the classroom Have better social skills and classroom behaviour They are also less likely to: Have low self-esteem Need redirection in the classroom Develop behavioural issues Students aren’t the only ones who benefit from family engagement: parents and teachers do, too. Teachers can prepare parents to help with homework or academic concepts. And engaged parents tend to think highly of teachers, which improves teacher morale. Knowing more about a student’s family life can also help teachers prepare lessons that better fit that student’s needs or interact more efficiently with families. And because students receive more support, classrooms with engaged parents perform better as a whole. When parents and teachers team up, everyone wins! https://www.waterford.org/education/how-parent-involvment-leads-to-student-success/ 5

Glenstantia Primary Sschool SURVEYS We are in the process of sending several surveys using the SoGo Survey Tool, to our parents regarding school related matters / decisions. We urge you to please participate in these surveys. Please know that the surveys are 100% anonymous. This will assist us with the day to day running of the school, as well as long term decisions for our learners and school related matters. Your voice counts! We rely on you, the parent, to tell us what you think and what your needs / preferences are. Please know that the surveys are 100% anonymous. The first survey, which was sent on 19 February 2020 to over 2000 parents was regarding the option to change the Grade 3 – 7 Girl’s Winter Uniform. Only 174 parents responded. This is not nearly enough to make an informed decision regarding the potential change of the girls’ uniform. Please complete the surveys as they arrive. Every voice will be heard. The next few surveys will pertain to Sports & Culture. We will also have a few regarding the running of the school, maintenance of the buildings and grounds as well as staff related questions. Help us to help you. WATER WASTAGE We remind our parents to please send a bottle of water with your child to school in the mornings as there is a lot of water wasted at school when our learners drink from the taps at school. WATER IS A SCARCE RESOURCE – IT IS OUR DUTY TO USE IT SPARINGLY. 16
On Friday, 21 February 2020 the elected prefects for 2020 departed from Glenstantia Primary School for a weekend at Sediba Kwêle in the North West. The purpose of the weekend was for leadership development and bonding as a prefect group. The prefects participated in adventure activities which included zip-lining, river rafting, water activities, an obstacle course and a catwalk. They also participated in a leadership course that taught them team work. This experience was an unforgettable one and the school will definitely benefit from what our prefects learnt during their stay. We wish to thank all the teachers who accompanied our prefects and assisted with supervision over the weekend. The induction for our 2020 prefects will take place on Friday, 6 March 2020, at 07:45 17
