“What is Measured is Treasured—Measuring Paideia”
by Dr. Jim Johnson, ECA Superintendent
Perhaps you have heard it said that “what is measured is treasured.” In the context of education, this idea
implies that if you really care to achieve something, you’ll keep track of progress toward that achievement.
In my years of leading our school, I have observed that most parents, regardless of the school they choose for
their children, have two primary goals: 1) they would like their children to get admitted into good colleges,
and 2) they would like their children to obtain a good job. Rarely does the conversation go any deeper than
that. However, perhaps it should!
David Goodwin, President of the Association of Classical Christian Schools (ACCS), of which ECA is an
accredited member, released the results of a major study just last week. In conjunction with the Cardus
Educational Study, Mr. Goodwin provides a comparative study of 24-to-42-year-old alumni from public,
secular, private, Catholic, evangelical Christian, religious homeschools, and ACCS schools on the topics
of life choices, preparation, attitudes, values, opinions, and practices. I believe you can guess that he has
addressed the effectiveness of these schools in their ability to go much deeper than college or career placement.
In his introductory materials regarding the study, Mr. Goodwin writes, “Jesus’s kingdom, like every kingdom
or nation, has a culture. The primary function of paideia in the ancient world was the cultivation of culture in
children. Paideia is often translated “education,” but the concept is much bigger, encompassing the steady
cultivation of deep, rich lives wherein the gospel can take root and flourish. Ephesians 6 uses this Greek word
paideia when it commands fathers to “raise their children in the paideia of the Lord,” and it is around this
thought that Mr. Goodwin has fashioned his study. His conclusion is that classical Christian education “can
influence the course of a nation, a community, and a home.”
This study, entitled “Good Soil,” addresses seven “Life Outcome Indexes.” These include: college and career,
outlook on life, Christian practices, Christian life, traditional and conservative view, independent thinking, and
influencers. I’ll be eager to share these results with you when they are officially released.
I have been able to take a cursory look at the study, and I will tell you that I am impressed with the order of
magnitude of difference that a classical Christian education makes. Certainly, each student responds somewhat
differently to their school exposures – especially within the context and relationships of their personal lives.
However, aggregate results tend to support the value of Christian culture in the successes seen in the indexes
referenced above.
To see a brief video trailer on the study, search for: Good Soil: The Classical Difference. For the entire study,
go to www.ClassicalDifference/good-soil/ (click “View Report” at the bottom of the page).
As we look forward to our 50th year of education at ECA, I hope that you will pray with me that we can remain
“humbly effective” in working with families to raise their children in the paideia of the Lord.

forced to stay with her dreary Aunt Mathilda at her even drearier summer home. But after accidentally conking
herself on the head, Alice discovers that a world of wonder and whimsy awaits her right behind Aunt Mathilda's

Black Forest League High School Basketball
From Coach Wingett. . . The regular season is coming to an end. JV is currently 11-5 with one game to play and have
had a great season. Cooper Hill, Garrison Counts and Max Hatcher have shown tremendous amounts of growth this
season, and on the court, we have had strong performances from RJ Wagner, Samuel Ross, Michael Mann, Jon Bunker,
David Bunker, Jarod Guest, and Noah Coddington. The boys have done a great job of developing as both basketball
players and young men of God, and we are so proud of them and Coach Hodge for all the work that they have put in.
Varsity are currently 15-3 with one game left to play and will enter the District Tournament as the #1 or #2 seed. The boys
are currently ranked in the top 15 in the State, and we are hopeful for another deep run into the playoffs. Michael Kim, a
Freshman, has shown tremendous growth this year both on and off the floor. We are led in scoring by Jason Holt with just
over 20 points per game, followed by Sam Mote with almost 12 points per game. Landon Bunker leads in assists at about
6 per game, and Judah Alexander and Jonah Aragon lead in rebounds with each at almost 7 per game. We have been so
very proud of this group of young men. They have been a shining example to everyone that we have played of Christ’s love
and how to be an athlete in the His name. The District Tournament begins next Monday, February 24, and the Eagles
have earned a Bye in both Round 1 and the Quarterfinals. Semifinals are next Friday and the Championship and 3rd Place
games next Saturday at the CS City Auditorium, times and opponents TBD ($8/$6 Students & Seniors). Go, Eagles!
Our Lady Eagles enter their last regular-season game tonight vs. Pikes Peak Christian with a 9-9 overall record. Team
leaders Amy Antes, Ella Kim, and Maddie Castro lead a younger crew of Hadassah Derosier, Micah Elpers, Kailey
DeRuiter and Elana Sutton into the District Tournament most likely as the #4 seed which should give the Lady Eagles
home games next Monday and Tuesday in Round 1 and the Quarterfinals, 6:00 in the Eagle’s Nest. Victories both days
would advance the team to the Semifinals and Finals next Friday and Saturday at the City Auditorium! JV completed
their season with a convincing victory vs. 2A Peyton last Saturday! Contributors this season were Darcey Wingett,
Hadassah Derosier, Keira Morton, Myah DeJong, Shea Atkins, Kailey DeRuiter, Elana Sutton, Emily Mann and
Emily Minot who were fun to watch and a great example to all!
