Our Lady, Mother of the Church Page Two Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ, Happy Mother’s Day! The beginning of May was marked with Saint Joseph, and this whole month in our catholic tradition belongs to Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus. There are many Marian devotions across countries at this time of the year -- litanies, processions, pilgrimages, and so we, too, at the parish celebrate with a May Crowning. At the end of this month, we will also observe the Feast of Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. In such a Marian climate we honor in a special way our Mothers, Grandmothers, Godmothers on the second Sunday of this beautiful month. I would say that a kind of spiritual umbilical cord to our mother spans across our entire lifetime; even when we are far away, even when our mothers finished their earthly pilgrimage, we are connected in spiritual ways to our mothers. This weekend we offer all Masses for our Living and Deceased Mothers. We pray with thankful hearts for the health and blessing to our living mothers, and for eternal reward to those who passed away. In the gospel reading we hear today about the greatest commandment – the commandment of love. Thinking about mothers we can’t avoid thinking about their love and how they instilled their love in us. God truly loves us because He first showed His love toward us. In the same way, mothers truly love their children and are first to show their love, not waiting for any sign of reciprocation. But, as time goes on, we grow up, and we are able to really show our thankfulness and love. We should not hesitate to show how much we love them. Let us honor these special women in our life. At the liturgy we pray for them. Beyond the liturgy, I think you already know how to honor them in the best way. For all our Beloved Mothers – Happy Mother’s Day! First Communion Students who participated in the full meaning of the Eucharist and received the Body of Christ this Saturday will be part of our May Crowning ceremony at 11 o’clock. Our prayers and congratulations go to First Communicants and their families. Your joy is a joy of the entire parish community. This is a special day; this is a day which we will remember for life. Allow Jesus to come to you in the Eucharist on regular basis. What is special today, let it become your regular practice. At our Religious Education Program, we did a closing Mass for 2020-21. We celebrated the Sacrament of Confirma- tion. We celebrated First Holy Communion. So, what next? Vacation? Not quite. Registration forms for 2021-22 are ready to be filled up. Parents, you can find them in the narthex and on the parish website. Truly, we are in digital world and filling registration forms in electronic way makes office work much easier. But if you prefer to use a pencil that’s also great. We need to know how many children/youth we should expect for the program, how many books we need to order, schedule classes and catechists etc. This past year was a very unusual time in religious education, but we made it and thank you, parents, for your dedication to grow your children in our spiritual depth of faith. I’m also very grateful to our catechists, and especially to our Religious Education Interim Committee Sandy Wilson, Pat Peterson, and Barb Annoreno for their dedication of time and talents in taking care of the Catechetical Mission at OLMC. May God bless you, Father Andrew Mount Rainier National Park photo by AB

We are a caring Catholic community, working together as instruments through which Jesus, our risen Lord and Head, continues His mission. Linked to Christ as His Body, we believe that the risen Jesus still proclaims God’s word, gives thanks and praise, welcomes, nurtures, comforts and reaches out to all people. Using the hands and hearts of the members of the parish, with a growing sense that each of us is gifted and has an important part to play in our Parish, Church and World, we renew our call: to be a Parish diligent about Word and Eucharist, the primary source of our nourishment and spiritual growth... to be “missioned” - sent forth in the person of Jesus, to bring His Word and Eucharist to family, friends, neighbors and workplace... to reach out to the sick, the homebound, the per- secuted, the lonely, the poor and the bereaved… to find time to share laughter, joy, friendship, at times, tears; and always to share the goodness of each other...

Committee and some of the Catechists and members of the Pandemic Safety Deacon Chris Virruso, Sandra Wilson, Committee join and Jim Summers welcome Gilda Moretti Fr. Andrew back to Sunday Mass! after the R.E. closing Mass. It is a pleasure to be able to reach out to you, through a simple phone call, a quick visit, or via the Bulletin to let you know you are not alone during these trying times and to share information on Covid-19 or other concerns. I have spoken frequently about the signs and symptoms of the virus and the guidelines set forth by the CDC and Illinois Department of Public Health. The vaccine is more readily available, and with it, we will see an end to this pandemic. Please receive the vaccine to help keep yourself and others well! By focusing on the Covid-19 virus, maintaining guidelines, which include keeping our distance and isolating our- selves, the fear of contracting the virus have led many people from seeking the medical care that they need, especial- ly in an emergency. Please be aware that there are also guidelines for identifying and treating conditions such as STROKE. May is National Stroke Awareness Month. Many may have heard that with this virus, the health care system has seen an increasing number of strokes in all ages. When it comes to stroke, every minute counts. Below are the symptoms of stroke. It is extremely important that when you notice these symptoms you seek medical care immediately (Call 911)! By doing so, you may be able to help stroke patients get the treatments they need to survive, reducing damage to the brain and reversing any lasting effects of the condition. Be well! Be safe! Know you are in my prayers! Peace, Terri, RN
Our Lady, Mother of the Church Page Ten Our Lady of Fatima and the Rosary Our Rosary intention this week is for more people to include the Rosary as part of their daily prayer. This coming Thursday, May 13, is the 104th anniversary of the first apparition of Our Lady of Fatima to three children: Lucia dos Santos, Francisco and Jacinta Marto. Lucia asked if the three of them would go to heaven. Our Lady said yes, except that Francisco would have to pray many Rosaries. Our Lady also told them, “Say the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war,” which at the time was World War I. On June 13, 1917, Lucia asked again if the three of them would go to heaven. Our Lady said that Jacinta and Francisco would go soon, but Lucia would have to stay to help establish devotion to her Immaculate Heart. Our Lady of Fatima appeared to the three children again each month through October. Every time she appeared, she asked them to say five decades of the Rosary every day. In July, Our Lady also told them to say after each Mystery, “O my Jesus, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy.” Please join Lori G., John I., Evelyn K., Terri K., Gilda M., Lonnie M., Mary M., Ted M., Josephine N., Emilie P., Stefania P., Jean R., Shirley S., and Milabelle T. in praying the Rosary. The Living Rosary is where people each pray a decade of the Rosary daily for the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and in honor of the patron of the Living Rosary, Saint Philomena. The Joyful Mysteries and the first three Luminous Mysteries are prayed by Ted M.—Annunciation, Barb R.—Visitation, Josephine N.— Nativity, Karen R.—Presentation, Mary M.— Finding of Jesus in the Temple, Barb R.— Baptism, Mary M.—Wedding at Cana, and Ted M.—the Kingdom of God at Hand. During this month of Our Lady, please contact the rectory office, or email tmarszalek@archchicago.org to add your name to the Rosary list, or pray the fourth Luminous Mystery, the Transfiguration. Please Pray for Our Sick & Homebound Alice Baxter, Judy Biala, Donna Brennan, George Capps, Celso Castor, Jerome Compell, Speranza DiPaolo, Rosa Favia, Mark Gutierrez, Jerry Johnsen, Maureen Keating, Harry Krawczyk, Raffaela Loizzo, Thomas Michaels, Paul Masciopinto, Salvatore Modica, Vittoria Nudo, Arlene Presta, Jean Pontarelli, Hector Ramos, Michael Ricchio, Dan Staniec, Lavergne Suchor, John Toniolo, Hector & Milagros Torres, Fred Tuytens, Ida Vitaro, Rena Walzer, Jim Weaver, Dolores Wilk, Paul Wolek, Joyce Wolter, Ken Woods, Lorraine Wuss, Clare Zanatta, Ann Caruso, Eileen Grallo, Tom Szczech, Jean Muglia and those in the hospital and nursing homes.
