March 2019 LENT 2019 Once Easter is set, the Church counts backwards 40 days not including Sundays to identify the season of Lent. Beginning with Ash Wednesday, we engage in a 40-day journey of reflection and repentance corresponding to the 40 days that Jesus spent in the wilderness following his baptism. This was a time where, in the face of temp- tation, Jesus prepared for his public ministry of announcing the kingdom and good news of God. Lent stirs Chris- tians to penitence, recognizing our sinfulness and need for grace, and many Christians choose holy disciplines during Lent—prayer, fasting, worship, sacrifice (giving something up or taking something up). No single event in human history has received more attention than the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. This Lent we will use Rev. Adam Hamilton’s resource to journey through the last 24 hours of Jesus’ life. Not only will Sunday sermons sharpen our focus on the sig- nificance of the suffering and death and death of Jesus, but our Small Groups (see page 2 for the list) will look at the geographical and histori- cal setting of the and even see video footage of locations in Israel where these events unfolded. Whether you are a long-time Christian or simply curious about the story of Christ’s crucifixion, you are invited to join us for this powerful series as we retrace – 24 Hours That Changed the World. ASH WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6 , 5:30 PM On Ash Wednesday, we will gather in the Sanctuary for a service of imposition of ashes. Ashes have a long heritage in scripture as a sign of confession, penitence, and repentance. For those who so choose, the pastors will make the sign of the cross on your forehead with ash. At the heart of the cross is the gift of forgiveness and the grace of new life. May we be so marked with his forgiveness and new life!

IN HONOR OR MEMORY OF Remembering someone who has gone to be with our Lord with a gift to your church is a thoughtful way to show the family that their loved one has been important to you. An honorarium is also a good way to let someone know that their service makes a difference to you. It can be general (just designate FUMC) or it can be to a specific fund or project that is special to you or to the person you are remembering. It means a great deal to the families of loved ones to know others cared also, and this is one way to do that. If you need suggestions or more information, please feel free to call Susan Griffith, chairman of our Memorials Committee at 252-808-5098. Your generosity is always appreciated by this church as well as by the families of these. You make a difference in the life of FUMC. Thank you!
