Our Lady of the Lake 2385 Commerce Blvd. MONTHLY MAIL-OUT BULLETIN Mound, MN 55364 Catholic Church 952-472-1284 VOLUME CXVII Fr. Tony O’Neill, Pastor ourladyofthelake.com January 20th, 2019 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time “To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.” - 1 Corinthians 12:7 As we walk through the seven capital sins, the first one that we will focus on is envy. Envy is our wanting something that belongs to someone else. It is usually manifested in experiencing sadness when someone else is experiencing good fortune. This is because we feel the lack of what someone else is experiencing or receiving. On account of this, we begin to desire that the other person lose what they have, so it becomes a negative attitude towards them. We often think of envy in terms of material goods, which is more properly understood as covetousness. Jealousy is also related, but is when we already have something but are afraid we may lose it. Envy is often even deeper, focusing on internal qualities of a person and thus our very identity. So, envy is not simply about the possessions or attributes themselves, but what they say about who we are. By reflecting on who we envy, we can learn more about ourselves and how we are seeking to define who we are in the world. The effects of envy within our lives can be detrimental. It destroys our ability to truly love because it creates walls between us and our neighbor, and between us and God. It stirs up a spirit of comparison that cuts deep into our hearts. Because of this, it leads to feeling isolated and inferior. Envy can lead to hatred, where we begin to speak ill of another to help us cope with that feeling of sadness and isolation. It can sow discord as relationships develop tensions and hidden thoughts. It can create an unhealthy desire for riches and honors to try to surpass those whom we envy. And envy disturbs our peace as it keeps us from resting in our true identity. To fight envy in our life, it is important to recognize the deep need we have for receiving unconditional love, and recognizing that this can only come from our relationship with God. Spending time in prayer, and especially developing a heart of gratitude for our many blessings is important. At the same time, we want to cultivate charity in our lives. In regards to fighting against envy, this can be done in three ways. The first is through hidden acts of charity. It is important that they be hidden so that we are not tempted to try to “one up” others, or seek recognition for what we are doing, which could end up feeding our envy. The second way is to invest deliberately in activities that have a shared good. This is so that you can both enjoy the activity without it becoming a secret competition. Some potential ideas are to enjoy beauty by going to a concert, looking at art, or spending time outside in nature. The third is to pray that the person you are envious of gets what you want. So, for example, if you are envious that someone is getting more attention than you, to go to pray and say, “Lord may you please give N. even more attention. May you help them to be sought after and understood.” At first you do not have to completely believe those words with your heart, but as you continue to pray them, your heart will become less inclined towards envy, and more inclined towards charity and believing in that prayer. In Christ, Fr. Peter Eucharistic Adoration Are you looking for a way to grow in your relationship with Jesus Christ? Eucharistic Adoration is a time to wait and listen in God’s Eucharistic Presence. We currently have eight hours each week with only one Adorer, and we try to schedule two Adorers for each hour. Both day and evening options are available. Please contact Jane at 952-472-3825 for more information about this prayer ministry.

School News Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School - Building the Spirit January, 2019 A Message from the Principal – Becky Kennedy January is a busy month for us at school with MAP growth assessments, Science Fair, Kindergarten Round-Up, registration for next year opening up, Prek-8 Open House, and Catholic Schools Week. Over break, I was able to take some time and reflect on my time at OLL during 2018. We have a lot to celebrate and be thankful for. A few highlights for me are: • Improved registration numbers for the 18/19 school year • Sending off six amazing 8th graders to make a difference in their high school • Coming together with great supports of the school at the Gala - remember the snow storm last April? • Celebrating our grandparents and other VIP’s at Generation Day • Earning the High Achievement-High Growth status with our 17/18 school year MAP results • Responsive Classroom training for all classroom teachers • Completing NAEYC Accreditation work and preparing for the site visit • Surpassing our Rake-a-Thon goal and spending the day serving others • Wonderful social events for families Having the best faculty and staff any principal could ask for! The list could go on, but I must stop somewhere! Make sure to save the date for the 4th annual Keg & Cork on March 2. It is promising to be a good time! Praising, Working, Loving Becky School Open House We will have an all school open house on Sunday, January 27th, from 11:45am-1:45pm. All students are invited to present a literacy project for the optional literacy fair that will be held during the open house. Please spread the word to your friends and neighbors. 7
State of the School Meeting Mark your calendars for the important State of the School Meeting which will be held on February 7th, at 6:30pm. You will hear how we are doing and where we are heading. You won’t want to miss it! Spelling Bee A Spelling Bee for students in Grades 5-8 will be held in January. Three contestants will be selected to compete at HFCHS against the other six CSC schools on Thursday, January 24th. January Service Project As our January service project, OLL is registered to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Student Series’ Pennies for Patients. While our students collect money to help find cures for blood cancer patients, they learn about service, leadership and philanthropy. By collecting change, students will help people touched by blood cancers. In the 1960s, the survival rate for the most common form of childhood leukemia was 3%. Today it’s approximately 90% thanks to many research advances funded by LLS. Our collection will run through January 21st. We will be doing a prayer wall for people we know who have cancer. 2019-2020 Registration Registration for the 2019-2020 school year will open January 14th. If you register by January 28th, the regis- tration fee will be waived. Catholic Schools Week January 27 – February 1, 2019 Catholic Schools Week (CSW) starts on Sunday, January 27th with a pancake breakfast after the 8:30am and 10:30am Masses. The OLL Danceline will perform after the 10:30am Mass. In addition, there is an Open House from 11:45 – 1:45 for all grades Preschool – 8th grade. CSW is celebrated with special events and themes each day for our students. 8
