Teacher Interview ELITE NEWS A Student Publication of Humanities III January 2020 (V. 7) ELITE News The Op/Ed Edition Since our last volume in November, a lot has happened at HUM III. We celebrated the winter holidays through a variety of events (Friendsgiving Feast, Winter Show, Holiday Mixer, etc.), acknowledged student achievement and success (Trimester 1 Honor Roll Ceremony), received advice from our alumni of Cohorts 2017-2019 (Alumni Panel & Mixer), bonded as a senior cohort (Senior Events) and transitioned into a New Year: 2020! This edition highlights these events as well as the opinions of our Journalism team members through a collection of Op/Ed articles focused on topics and issues affecting our students and community. Throughout the year we will also be continuing to film your weekly news broadcasts, and have begun talks about creating vlogs and a senior website. We are here to get all of the information out to you! We ask that if you have suggestions to improve our newspaper; want to submit an article, comic, creative writing piece, etc.; or have ideas for other journalism outlets, please reach out to us. Talk to Ms. Baurle (Room 302) for more details. ENJOY! Friends to Family By Fatumata Kamara Friends giving is an annual feast that has taken place at Humanities III since the beginning of time. It’s an event that truly captures the school culture of coming together and strengthening the bond within the school community. This year’s Friendsgiving Feast took place on the 27th of November in the school cafeteria. Students were given the freedom of dressing down as long as it followed the dress code guidelines, with that, students came with their flyest outfits to create an aesthetic vibe. When it was time for the feast, students hurried downstairs to be revealed to a full out celebration. This year we had an actual DJ who added on to the positive vibe, the food was from Chef Jeff, who gave us a new flavor. Who knew we needed a Haitian twist to Thanksgiving? It was fun to say that the table didn’t catch on fire, the food didn’t fall, and the DJ didn’t mess up the music. For the first time in a long time, nothing went wrong at the Friendsgiving Feast, which means we finally got rid of Macbeth’s curse. We hope that y'all had an amazing time with friends and family. Flour Baby Project By Ryan Graham In Mrs. Harper's Health class seniors learn about the responsibility of taking care of a baby by participating in a Flour Baby Project. Do you know what it’s like to take care of a flour baby? It’s very stressful because you have to make sure the baby is always in a safe environment, and also make sure the baby has a proper babysitter. The reason why I say that is because many things can go wrong if your baby is in the wrong hands. People will talk about or insult your flour baby and try to hurt your flour baby, so you always have to stay alert. Having to carry it on the bus and home, you get very tired of carrying the baby.
January 2020 (V. 7) ELITE News HUM III Winter Show By Woodjunie Jean Pierre The winter show was a very spectacular event that took place at Humanities III. The Humanities III staff came to support the holiday season as a family. Mrs. Harper, the Host, provided us with many different acts. One of the biggest acts featured Humanities’ very own students, Prudence Stewart and Jovenson Jerome, who danced to “Mary Did You Know.” Many thought the act was the best of the show. The dance gave us an emotional feeling. There was a chemistry that took place which helped make the dance even more beautiful. The African cultural dance tribute stole the hearts of many. It took us back to the African culture and gave us much insight. Giving tribute to the African culture made me acknowledge my heritage and love where my ancestors came from. Another noteworthy performance was the ASL Performance. They provided the audience with a language that is so beautiful. Giving tribute to such a beautiful language showed how the school is accepting of diversity. The ASL class provided us with students dancing and other students signing the song “Jingle Bells.” Breast Cancer The purpose Awareness of the show was to get everyone excited for the holidays and enjoy themselves for the upcoming days. We left on a happy and joyful note. Mrs. Harper and all the performers and crew gave us a show we won’t ever forget. Senior Events Overview By Sierra Brewster & Maleisha Sosa On November 15, 2019, the seniors here in Humanities III celebrated their last year in high school with a night full of 4 teams competing in different games; the fun was unavoidable. The school was generous enough to provide Papa John's pizza and wings and a variety of sodas, not the healthiest variation, but still very generous. The night started off with rounds of Family Feud followed by Pictionary, and to end the night, HUM III Trivia. Each team received points for each round of play. The team with the most points won gift cards. Our most recent senior event was the Sip n’ Paint. Students and staff created two different unique art pieces: a mini-one for a Cohort 2020 mural that will be placed in the hallways, and a larger one for themselves. There were fun mocktails and snacks. A contest was held to see whose painting was the most popular. Odania was our winner with her piece called “Casa de Harper.” All the students and staff there had a great time relaxing and showing off their painting skills. “The Sip n’ Paint was filled with good vibes and good energy. The snacks were good and the mimosas. I enjoyed the event and I like the painting that I made,” said Garnelle. Our Senior Movie Night took place on UPCOMING SENIOR EVENTS December 16th. January 2020 (V. 7) ELITE News Alumni Panel & Mixer By Cetira Hayes Reunions are fun and sweet. Recently, the alumni of Humanities 3 were invited back for a day to share their college expertise with current students and a chance to mingle. Alumni were given the chance to speak panel-style, with the current students asking all the questions and the alumni answering honestly. A majority of the alumni from 2019 showed up for the mixer, getting to reconnect with old friends. Current students of the 2020 and 2021 were invited to the panel, able to have a chance to speak with the previous students of the school. One student mentioned, “The panel gave me a chance to find out what college is really like once you leave high school. Not just college, but life itself.” A few of the panelists included Emmanuel Newyear (2017), Carla Fontaine (2019), Erika Jean Pierre (2019), and Rouguiyata Diallo (2019). They bestowed their current knowledge of college life upon the 11th and 12th grade students who are getting ready to enter college soon, which was very helpful. They recounted their first days of school, as well as juggling classes, friendships, jobs, etc. They provided useful tips and tools such as getting planners and lessening your workload. Scholars who are currently still preparing to go to college found these recounts and tools helpful because they needed some sort of guide to what college is really going to be like once they leave high school, and not what they learn from textbooks in school. Some helpful tips they learned were: Have a planner to write down your daily schedule Don’t bite off more than you can chew, meaning don’t overload yourself with a handful of activities and things to do. Plan. New Year's Resolution By Habi Barry According to Wikipedia, “A New Year's resolution is a tradition that is most common in the Western Hemisphere, but also is found in the Eastern Hemisphere, when a person resolves to continue good practices, change an undesired trait or behavior, to accomplish a personal goal, or otherwise improve their way of life.” New Year’s resolutions are helpful for people that want a fresh start. The purpose of making a resolution is to turn your goals and plans into action. Based upon a student poll, here are the most common New Year’s resolutions: Exercise more Learn a new skill or hobby Save more money or spend less money Spend more time with family and friends Diet or eat healthier Get good grades 3 Have a wonderful and blessed new year.

January 2020 (V. 7) ELITE News World Issue News: Human Trafficking By Tyler Felix A major issue in the world today is Human Trafficking. People should be aware of human trafficking because social media is a dangerous tool and bad things can happen when personal information gets leaked and people aren’t careful and safe. According to DoSomething.org, here are some important facts about human trafficking: - Estimates suggest that, internationally, only about .04% survivors of human trafficking cases are identified, meaning that the vast majority of cases of human trafficking go undetected. - Globally, an estimated 71% of enslaved people are women and girls, while men and boys account for 29%.[5] - In 2018, over half (51.6%) of the criminal human trafficking cases active in the US were sex trafficking cases involving only children. - Reports indicate that a large number of child sex trafficking survivors in the US were at one time in the foster care system. - Advocates report a growing trend of traffickers using online social media platforms to recruit and advertise targets of human trafficking - The average age a teen enters the sex trade in the US is 12 to 14 years old. Many victims are runaway girls who were sexually abused as children Contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline to connect with services and support for human trafficking survivors, or to report a tip: call 1-888-373-7888, text 233733, or chat online. January 2020 (V. 7) ELITE News Op/Ed: Bullying By Habi Barry Bullying is an unwanted and unacceptable behavior that affects many lives. People who are bullied can experience negative physical, school, and mental health issues. Bullying can end a person’s life which is why we need to end it sooner rather than later. Everyday, people’s lives are in great danger due to the cause of bullying. There are many types of bullying such as physical bullying, cyber bullying, verbal bullying, and social bullying. Bullying affects people of all ages in different ways. Bullies usually torment and intimidate their victims because of the problems that they’re dealing with. “Those who chronically bully tend to have strained relationships with parents and peers,” says psychologytoday.com. Growing up I experienced getting bullied. I was made fun of for being different and looking different. Being bullied in my middle school made me feel vulnerable and made me not want to go to school. I was sad most of the time and all I did was fight. However, standing up to the bullies allowed me to realize that instead of fighting, I want my voice to be heard. Getting support from my friends and family made me care about addressing this issue for people that feel helpless in those kinds of situations. In order to prevent bullying we would have to help more people understand what bullying is and make them aware of what’s happening around them. Also, exemplifying how to treat others with kindness and respect. Taking these actions will help us move forward in a positive direction to building a safer environment that is anti-bullying. Overall, bullying is an intolerable issue that needs to be stopped in our community. So, don’t be that person who sits there and tolerates this problem. Op/Ed: The Problem With School Lunches By Tyler Felix The lunch in the school is terrible. The lunch in this school is not good. From my experience after eating it, I have a headache and feel sick. Most students will probably say the same thing. I do not think it is the lunch lady's fault. I feel like it is more of the government. One time I saw a high school with a Taco Bell and all types of mini fast food restaurants. I was very surprised and thought about why doesn't this school have this. But the reason why I am saying this is because the food may have something inside of it which explains why I felt sick and had a headache. Maybe the reason why this school doesn't have Taco Bell, etc. is because this school doesn't have the funding and wouldn't make sense to have these nice things because people might abuse it. An example is when cookies are supplied you are only supposed to take one, but when the lunch lady is not looking, students take more, leaving none for the rest of the students. In conclusion the lunch should be well cooked and well prepared. Maybe the food does not have to be fast food, but at least by the end when students go home they should not feel sick. Op/Ed: Campus-Wide Competition By Jason Lubrun You know what I want in this school so badly? More interaction (mostly competition) in The Frank J. Macchiarola Educational Complex! Lately, I have been thinking, “HUM III gets disrespected way too much in Sheepshead. Why not have a competition where all schools compete to see who’s the best school once and for all?” One way this could work is by having a “Tridecathlon” between HUM III, AMS III, Origins and Pathways (A tridecathlon is a combination of a triathlon and a decathlon for those who didn’t know). Have multiple dedicated days where everyone from ALL SCHOOLS is able to have their selected group of students perform/compete. The winner of this event would win a trophy and have their names put up in the Hall Of Fame. 7
January 2020 (V. 7) ELITE News Op/Ed: Drug Abuse By Cetira Hayes How far is too far? Juice Wrld died on December 8th, 2019 from an overdose of drugs after being warned of security waiting at the airport. Drugs of all sorts have recently become a problem overall, including weed. Now, I’m sure you’re all like, ‘we’re young. We want to live and experiment.’ Go ahead, go ahead and ruin any future opportunities you may have. Continuing down this road will get you in trouble, or even worse, in prison. You guys may be young, but your actions speak louder than your words. You need to learn that there are consequences to every action, and for every consequence there is a repercussion, such as prison or even death. Imagine if it were your own friend in the situation of doing drugs. Would you encourage them to continue? Or to stop before they went too far? Or even a family member of yours? How would it feel then? I knew a girl, let's call her Jane, who did drugs almost everyday since the 10th grade. She skipped school to smoke, or even smoked on school property almost every day. I tried to warn her, but she didn’t listen. She’s in her mid twenties now, and she’s hooked on all kinds of drugs: LSD, Oxycodone, and she even does shrooms. Now, I’m not trying to kill her buzz, but surely you guys don’t want to end up like that? Taking almost every drug known because you want to experiment? Or because you’ve become addicted. Or like our friend Juice Wrld. I mean, come on. Swallowing a whole batch of pills? Just to not get caught? I personally would’ve preferred to go to jail than to die, at least I would’ve been able to enjoy the rest of my life free afterwards. Seems he chose his path. Now people think that drugs are helpful. They think that drugs are medicinal at times and can help with stress relief, anxiety, etc. They believe that it should be distributed by a licensed professional. I think otherwise. I think that even though it can have medicinal values, it shouldn’t be used in hospitals. It can have addictive qualities to patients and make them start to seek those drugs elsewhere and what not. So, how can you relieve stress and anxiety and just overall calm yourself down? Maybe you need a little change. For starters, you could try finding other stress coping mechanisms, like meditating or yoga, or even wrestling! Get that frustration out! Anything but smoking marijuana. Or taking pills that could kill you. Especially if you don’t know the person whos selling to you personally? Death will always be a possibility of taking drugs. No matter what. You must always have that thought in the back of your head. I would personally like to see all my friends and all the students of this school graduate and grow up to lead very interesting lives, not in a grave six feet under ground or in a 6 by 6 cell. I would rather see you guys succeed in life than to be hearing about your funerals. Please make good choices. Do you want to end life before it’s even begun? Op/Ed: The Prolem With Social Media By Kiana Jackson McMillan Social media is the life force of our generation because people post about their life story on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. I think that it’s not right to post your business and have everyone know everything about you because it can lead to bullying, fights, and personal information getting out to strangers. For example, I saw somebody put a video of a fight on the internet that could get people in trouble. I feel like it’s not good to do that because when you try to go get a job stuff is gonna pop up. Another example is when I saw somebody get exposed on snapchat and it traumatized the girl. People gotta be more careful who they send their picture to because if they aren’t careful rumors spread. I feel like social media is for older people to find their family and friends. I think social media is not to start problems its supposed to be cool. Teenagers made social media bad and this is why people barely want to be on it because it's nothing but drama and other bad stuff. I feel like people should say something about the bad things to make social media better. Also I think they should shut down all the social media. I feel like without social media things could get way better because that's where all the drama and other things start. People should just be more nice and help other people instead of being in drama. How can we make things more positive on social media? 8
