UPDATE www.aala.us Week of August 28, 2017 AALA SHOWS UP AT BOARD MEETING IN THIS ISSUE AALA SHOWS UP AT BOARD MEETING Because AALA will soon begin negotiations on the WHEN TO CALL AALA certificated contract, it is important that we take every FAQ – A GREAT RESOURCE FOR opportunity to be seen and heard and that our positions INFORMATIVE HEALTH NEWS on key items be continually emphasized. Historically, CONGRATULATIONS these positions are shared with members of the Board LAUSD FINGERTIP FACTS of Education at their meetings during the Labor TEEN SUICIDE RATES Partners time on the agenda, however this section was SCHOOLOGY ACCOUNTS not included on new Board President Ref Rodriguez’ ASPIRING ADMINISTRATOR order of business. Therefore, at the Board meeting on PROGRAMS August 22, 2017, AALA President Juan A. Flecha SCHOOL NURSES signed up to speak under the School Police contract IN MEMORIAM agenda item, hence the reference to them in his SAVE THE DATE comments, that are cited below. CALENDAR POSITIONS Our association congratulates the Los Angeles Police Association on the Salary Reopener Agreement and thanks them for their dedicated service to our administrators, schools, and students. AALA will soon enter negotiations too. For this reason, here with me today are some distinguished AALA alumni. For decades, they have and continue to stand with the District and today they are here to stand up for primary centers, a fair promotional process, competitive salaries, improved working conditions, the right drivers, options schools, span schools, high schools, middle schools, elementary schools, adult schools, Unit J, early education, retirees, principals, assistant principals, school support administrators, lifetime health benefits, and every student of the Los Angeles Unified School District. I want to highlight some of the luminaries in our ranks who are joining me today. Former Board Member Victoria Castro has already been acknowledged and we are pleased that she is here with us. Dr. Evangelina Stockwell distinguished herself for many years as a member of AALA; she retired from the District as Assistant Superintendent, and as a District-represented employee. She nevertheless returned to the fold and now serves as the Vice President of Friends of AALA, our nonprofit that awards between $50,000 to $70,000 dollars of scholarships yearly to deserving LAUSD seniors. Dan Isaacs retired from the District, was recruited by Governor Romer to leave retirement behind, returned as the Chief Operating Officer, retired, and returned to AALA where he continues proudly serving and defending our members. Dr. Judith Perez served as a notable principal, served two terms as the association’s president, and I am happy and proud to report she is the lead negotiator in our upcoming negotiations. Not only did Charlotte Lerchenmuller organize the troops today, she was my assistant principal in the beginning years of my teaching career at John C. Fremont HS. In addition, standing up for AALA are retired District administrators Doris Dillard, Jeri Durham, Cheryl Hovard-Walker, Mark Leos, Linda McClellan (who brought her sister Diane Sparks), Carolin McKie, Ron Oswald, Margaret Prietto, Steve Quon, and Dr. John White (see picture on the next page). Dr. McKenna, Mr. Schmerelson, Dr. Vladovic, and Dr. King, we will always claim you as our own and congratulations once again to the Los Angeles Police Association! We are ready to continue building bridges across the chasms separating us!

Associated Administrators of Los Angeles Congratulations to all school-site administrators and those who support them at the central and local district offices for a smooth opening to the school year. We wish to commend the hard work of all AALA members who worked tirelessly to ensure that schools were ready when teachers arrived on August 14 and students followed on August 15. We are proud of you! LAUSD FINGERTIP FACTS The District recently published its 2017-2018 Fingertip Facts, which provides statistical information about LAUSD, the second-largest school district in the country. It has more than 60,000 employees and covers 710 square miles that include portions or all of 26 cities and unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. The District enrolls more than 700,000 K―adult students who speak 95 different languages, including English. TEEN SUICIDE RATES INCREASE According to the CDC, the suicide rate of teenage girls 15 to 19 has doubled since 2007 and is the highest it has been in 40 years. While the suicide rate for females in this age group is much lower than that for males, the number of girls who attempt suicide is much higher than boys. Suicide is now the second leading cause of death among adolescents age 12 to 17. The dramatic increase is alarming and researchers cite many reasons, including increased access to social media, lack of mental health resources, and the public not fully understanding or recognizing suicidal behavior. Approximately five girls (ages 15-19) out of every 100,000 committed suicide in 2015, while 1500 boys in the same age group did so. Suicide prevention advocates say that social media has likely exacerbated the problems that teenage girls face with trying to fit in and comparing themselves to others. In addition, girls tend to have more internalized disorders, like anxiety, depression, or anorexia and parents or teachers may not recognize the signs. Males have higher rates of ADHD, substance abuse, or antisocial behaviors that are easier to identify, so they tend to have a better chance of receiving intervention. As much as twenty percent of the K-12 population in the country is affected by mental disorders making it a major public health issue. Some key risk factors for suicide are history of mental disorders, particularly clinical depression; history of alcohol and substance abuse; feelings of hopelessness; local epidemics of suicide; isolation, a feeling of being cut off from other people; and barriers to accessing mental health treatment. Warning signs include when adolescents begin talking about wanting to die, feeling hopeless or having no purpose, feeling trapped or in unbearable pain, and/or being a burden to others. Some effective suicide prevention factors that have been identified are clinical care for mental, physical, and substance abuse disorders; family and 4
Associated Administrators of Los Angeles SUICIDE (Cont.) community support (connectedness); developing skills in problem solving, conflict resolution, and nonviolent ways of handling disputes; and reinforcing cultural and religious beliefs that discourage suicide and support instincts for self-preservation. Attention Secondary Principals: This message is to inform you that it is not necessary for roster- carrying teachers to request a Schoology account from EZ Access. Roster-carrying teachers and principals are automatically enrolled in Schoology. Nonroster-carrying certificated staff (i.e., assistant principals, coordinators, counselors, etc.) members have been enrolled in Schoology and will have access. Certificated staff members who desire additional permissions (i.e., to access student grades, the ability to create courses, etc.) can request the “School Support” role via EZ Access (ezaccess.lausd.net). Please instruct your certified employees who cannot login to lms.lausd.net with their single sign on (SSO) to submit a MiSiS Help Desk (lausd.onbmc.com) ticket for assistance. The job aid on how to submit a MiSiS Schoology ticket is included below. If you have any questions, please contact Paulina Rock, Interim Director, Personalized Learning Systems, at 213.241.3017 or pxr2844@lausd.net. 5
