Sixth Class RSE Talk. Mrs. Mary Murphy, facilitated a meeting with the parents of sixth class pupils on Monday April 26th. Mrs. Murphy discussed issues relating to the children’s development and outlined possible areas of concern. The parents found this meeting very beneficial. Later the pupils were given information. They discussed some of the issues in open forum and they were later given an opportunity to write any questions they needed clarified. It was a worthwhile day and hopefully an investment in the future. Presentation by P.J.Lynch P.J. Lynch is a very talented illustrator. He was at the Towers and Tales Festival as he is the illustrator for Ryan Tubridy’s book “Patrick and the President.” P.J. made a presentation to third and fourth class pupils about his work as an illustrator. He explained to them that he normally gets as many as six books a week to illustrate. He begins the process by reading the book ten times. When he feels that he has a full understanding and appreciation of the plot and the characters, he then begins to draw. He really enjoys adding in details to all his pictures so as to complement the story. Mr. Lynch read a few stories to the children from books he had illustrated. He also signed autographs for them. Percussion Workshop Eamonn Cagney from Glanmire, spent two full days in the school providing a percussion workshop to the children. He had at least thirty-five drums, so each child had their own. They began by practising simple rhythms and as they mastered each one, they moved on to more complicated sequences. He then divided the group into two and each group played their own different rhythm simultaneously. It was a cacophony of sounds and rhythms. Bunscoil’s Got Talent! The staff and pupils of Bunscoil Bhóthar na Naomh hosted a fundraising variety concert in aid of Parents’ Council funds. The concert was held on Wednesday the 30th of May. They had two performances to accommodate the audience demand. The Junior Infants opened the show with the musical “Billy no Buzz”. This was a lively and energetic performance full of cute individual performances. Their songs and moves were fantastic. The School Choir performed next. They sang their two award winning songs “The Artist Teaches Us All” and “The Bare Necessities”. Next they gave a lovely rendition of the hymn “An Ephesian Prayer”. It was a beautiful prayerful moment during the concert. They finished with a lively rendition of the pop song “Can’t Stop the Feeling” by Justin Timberlake. Senior Infants entertained us all with “The Kitten Fell Down the Drain” and “The Best day of My Life”. They all danced and moved with the precision of professionals and the dab at the end was something to behold! The first half ended with Second Class pupils singing three songs. The first two were as Gaeilge enhanced by lovely movement. They sang the psalm “The Lord He is my Shepherd” from their Holy Communion ceremony. This hymn is very close to their hearts. After the interval, First Class turned into Jungle creatures! They entered the hall singing the “Circle of Life”. Their second song was called “I Just Can’t Wait to be King”. They sang this very confidently and had lovely choreography. Third Class performed their Irish play “Jeaic agus an Gas Pónaire”. They acted out the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. They acted it out superbly and delivered the story very convincingly. Joseph O’ Keeffe was recently awarded fourth place in the World Dance Championships. Joe danced a reel on stage and displayed his exceptional talent. It is mesmerising to watch the intricate steps danced at such speed. You can literally hear every beat of the music replicated by his feet. Well done Joe and continued success. Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Class took part in the Peace Proms Concert in Limerick in March. They performed some of this repertoire for the audience. They began with the Annie medley. Their sweet singing and gentle movements captured the audience. They followed with the lively rendition of the Pop Medley. Finally, they sang the lovely song “Heal the World”. There are lovely sentiments in this song wishing peace and joy to all the world. The concert came to a close with the Peace Proms Choir singing “Amhrán na bhFiann” accompanied by Rena Meagher on the concertina. The concert was a resounding success. The Cork City Hospitals Children’s Club brings children with long term illnesses on little holidays and day trips. This is a fantastic support to the children and their families. The other charity to benefit is an Outreach Medical Programme in Ghana. Medical students volunteer and work in the rural areas setting up temporary medical units where they provide a very valuable service to the local communities. The children from the senior classes donated cakes and buns to the school. The cake sale was a fantastic success and we are very grateful to all the parents for their support. Boys Primary School Hurling (Blake Cup) We began training in the cold and wet in preparation for the Blake Cup. Our group in the Blake Cup was Lismore, Garranbane, Abbeyside and Ballymac. Our first game was against Abbeyside and we beat them well. Our second match was against Garranbane and we beat them handily. We then played Ballymac at home and hammered them. We were then through to the Semi-Finals against Scoil Garbháin. We beat them easily and were through to the Western Final against Garranbane. In the end we beat them by 39 points. We were then through to the county final against Ballygunner. It was a hard game but at half-time were leading 2-2 to 0-5, in the end we came out victorious with a score line of 2-4 to 0-8. We stopped Ballygunner winning 4 county titles in a row and we hope to keep the cup in the school. Good luck to the 5th 4th and 3rd class who will be trying to retain the Blake Cup and County Title next year.
