Chess Chess opens a child’s eyes to his or her intellectual power. Young players learn to plan logically, anticipate consequences, calculate advantages, and persist in finding the right move – problem solving skills that apply to every academic subject. The chess program is directed by Damian Donovan, who has worked with the RCS community since 1998. SPK players will learn the moves and rules of chess. They will also solve simple checkmates on diagrams tailored for their level. Players will begin playing chess with “pawns only” and pieces will be added as they are learned. We will have occasional pizza parties. SPK players will be invited to participate in beginner chess tournaments during the year. Kindergarteners will learn the moves and rules of chess, algebraic nota- tion, and patterns of checkmate. They will receive an introduction to the basic strategic fundamentals of the game. They will play supervised games and practice the art of checkmate on diagrams tailored to the younger player. First and Second grade students will learn the moves and rules of chess. They will be taught basic opening theory, middle game strategy, tactics, defense, and endgame skills. Players will progress from one-move prob- lems to two and three move combinations leading to the gain of material or checkmate. For those interested, tournament play will be introduced. Third and Fourth grade students will enjoy the classic games of Morphy, Steinitz, Lasker, Capablanca and Alekhine, the period of Soviet domina- tion to Fischer, and the champions of today. Players will improve their problem solving skills, record their games, play on the clock, and be encouraged to participate in tournaments. We will send teams to local, state, and national tournaments (Orlando & Nashville). This year RCS players will defend their titles in the 2012 Bedford Championships! • Kids will enjoy “Bughouse/Pizza” parties during the term. • A high point of our year is the Potluck Supper/Parents vs. Kids Team Tournament in the spring.
