» Overview ‘Iolani Summer Residential Programs’ holistic approach offers students 11 to 16 years old the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning through enrichment classes, extracurricular activities and exciting field trips around O‘ahu. Regardless of the selected program, students will participate in daily leisure activities and excursions, with special events planned every weekend! ‘Iolani provides students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture on and off campus. In addition to a learning environment that takes advantage of the tremendous resources on campus, our enrichment programs utilize the school's geographic location in Honolulu to create unique opportunities for personal growth and development through exposure to Hawai‘i’s unique natural environment, culture, and local attractions and events. The goal of each program is to provide a balanced (schedule/slate) of academic pursuits and extracurricular activities. » How to Choose Your Courses Please read each of the course descriptions below, paying particular attention to when each course is available, and to which grade levels each course is available. Please note that some courses are available in each period for both sessions and others are only available in one period in session one or two but not both. Other courses are only available to students attending for six weeks. You are asked to choose TWO course options for each period. We will do everything we can to ensure your first choice is available to you; however, in some cases you will be assigned to your second choice. If you are attending our program for six weeks, we will need two course choices for each period for both session one and session two (up to 12 course choices depending on how many six week course offerings you choose). Non-Native English Speaking Students Students are welcome to take Language Arts for English Language Learners in two out of the three period blocks. If a student’s English proficiency is not satisfactory, ‘Iolani School may require the student to take Language Arts for English Language Learners in two period blocks. » Period 1 Class Offerings ENGLISH Language Arts for English Language Learners Grades 6–10 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 1, Period 2 and Period 3) Description: This course is designed to further develop students’ communication skills in English. Specific areas targeted include listening, reading, and writing, with attention on vocabulary development and grammar progression. Daily assignments give students the opportunity to improve language foundations and develop comfort in an English classroom environment. Written Expression Grades 7–8 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: Students develop and sharpen expository writing through a variety of exercises intended to create, inform, summarize, critique, and persuade. Students use materials representative of ‘Iolani's academic year writing program with a focus on various YA (young adult) material and texts. Speak-Ease Grades 7–9 2nd Session (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: Learn to speak with confidence and ease! Students gain the tools to be effective oral communicators within the classroom and beyond, working to engage and connect with their target audience. Students will learn and refine public and interpersonal speaking skills in an encouraging environment. » Period 1 Course Offerings Write Right! Grade 10 For 6 week students only (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: This course provides an intensive focus on college preparatory writing, including choosing rhetorical strategies, planning and organizing analytical details, and crafting both timed and college essays. Students will write daily and use writing as a process to sharpen their skills. Textbook required. Writing Sense Grades 7–8 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: Students will complete a variety of assignments based on sensory experience including poetry, fantasy writing, and character sketches. With a focus on enjoyment of reading and language and daily writing, this course will also explore the various mediums we use in expressing our literary thought. WORLD LANGUAGES Conversational Japanese Grades 6–9 For 6 week students only (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: Students learn basic spoken Japanese including greetings, useful expressions, personal questions and answers, and simple money transactions. Class activities include games, interviews and videos. No Japanese language background necessary. MATHEMATICS Some Science, Some Math Grades 6–8 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 1) Description: Through a series of fun hands-on labs, students will learn the proper techniques of collecting and expressing data, which will help in future math and science classes. Entertaining and educational science videos are utilized to enhance the learning experience. Algebra 1A Grades 8–9 For 6 week students only (Available Period 1) Description: Students review basic algebra skills before advancing to Algebra 1B/1C. Topics include signed numbers, simplifying expressions, properties of numbers, solving equations and inequalities, absolute value and applications to word problems. Textbook required. » Period 1 Course Offerings Math Foundations Grades 6–8 For 6 week students only (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: Students review the four basic operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals while strengthening their ability to apply those skills in problem solving situations. Math in Action Grades 6–8 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: Students have fun learning different ways in which math can be applied to our daily lives. Highlights include breaking codes, solving complex logic puzzles and using color patterns to create origami art. This course is designed for the student who asks, "Why do I need to learn math?" Pre-Algebra Grades 8–9 For 6 week students only (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: Students review the concepts of Pre-Algebra and explore various problem solving strategies. Topics include operations with real numbers, measurement and data analysis. Textbook required. Soroban: Mental Math Wizards Grades 6–9 1st Session only (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: The soroban or Japanese abacus is an ancient computational tool which is surprisingly useful in 21st century mathematical reasoning and development. Using the Soroban, students enhance their computational and estimation skills, and understanding of numeration and place value. Oshima- sensei, a soroban master, helps students visualize the mathematical operation and improve their mental computation. The goal of the course is not only to gain mathematical skills but also to improve concentration and confidence. 21ST CENTURY TOOLBOX Checkmate! Grades 6–10 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: Checkmate! will feature lessons for the very beginner to the most advanced chess player. Improve cognitive thinking habits with strategy, tactics, and in-depth calculations in solving chess problems. Learn about analysis and how it helps predict moves in chess as well as in life. » Period 1 Course Offerings Got Game? Grades 6–9 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: Join in on an exciting and innovative way of exploring games. Students will play games that we all love, learn strategies, and change the rules to create new, more exciting games. Through the challenges that are inherent in games, they will enhance their creative thinking, problem solving and logic skills, and have FUN! May be taken for both sessions. Code Fun! Grades 6–9 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: Have you ever wanted to make a picture dance? Have your computer speak to you? Make a webpage? Come learn about the exciting world of computer languages! Students in this course will explore various programming environments as well as build a foundation for future computing classes. No experience with programming required! Fun with Film! Grades 6–9 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: Learn to create high quality videos for school or family projects. This course introduces students to video production basics. Students develop planning, shooting, and editing skills necessary for producing videos that convey a message through their artistry. Discover your hidden talent and passion! Students are encouraged to bring their own digital recording device to class, in order to become familiar with their device and maximize its potential. Game Academy 3D Grades 7–10 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 1) Description: Do you like to play video games, build 3D models and program your own world? In this course, students research and create a 3D game in their self-made virtual world while being introduced to the Autodesk Maya program. Students use their creativity and develop skills in core academics, brainstorming, computer programming, project management and teamwork: lifelong skills that apply to a wide range of careers in digital media and beyond. Intro to Laser Cutting Grades 6–10 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 1, Period 2, and Period 3) Description: Bridging art and technology, this course is an introduction to digital design specifically for laser-cutting. Students will work extensively with 2D software programs to design and create laser-cut projects using a variety of materials in the fabrication lab. » Period 1 Course Offerings Just Type It! Grades 6–10 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: This course is designed for middle and high school students with a main emphasis on keyboarding skills. Students will learn proper keyboarding posture and technique while building their speed and accuracy using the touch type method. Students will focus on the alphabet, punctuation, and numeric keys. They should be able to key at 25 WPM by the end of the course. Students will also be introduced to a variety of options in Google Docs and Microsoft Office. STEM to the Rescue! Grades 7–8 1st Session only (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: In this highly interactive course, students will tackle and problem solve a new design challenge every day. Students will work in an environment that encourages creativity and teamwork. Through the daily challenges, students will learn design thinking techniques and employ the engineering process. Projects include a range of difficulty and duration; from the construction of a wheeled vehicle to a pneumatic device. Materials included. Welcome 2 Robotics! Grades 6–9 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: This course is a hands-on introduction to the challenge of the construction and programming of autonomous robots. It is a fun course for anyone wanting to be a part of the next generation of engineers and inventors with daily challenges and builds. Updated with the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 platform, students will be immersed in a project-based and collaborative learning environment, solving real world problems as they design, build and program working robots. STUDY AND LIFE SKILLS P/SAT & ACT Prep Grade 10 For 6 week students only (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: The `Iolani test prep course will focus on the college entrance exams: PSAT, SAT, and ACT. Students receive expert instruction on the critical reading, math, and writing sections of the tests. Students will be assessed and sorted into leveled groups on the first two class days. Special features of the course include: (1) acquisition of skills necessary for success on the tests (2) in-depth practice with official College Board and American College Testing materials (3) introductory college counseling from `Iolani's Director of College Counseling, (4) digital score analysis feedback for question-specific improvement. Fifty-eight hours of classroom instruction, 2 test prep texts, and a unique fall review before the actual examinations are included in the cost. » Period 1 Course Offerings PERFORMING ARTS Magic - The World of Wonder and Enchantment Grades 6–10 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 1, Period 2, and Period 3) Description: This course is a basic introduction to the art of magic. Through creativity and imagination, students develop their own magical character and style. Students will learn magic effects using everyday items, as well as cards, coins, ropes and silks. Balloon sculpture and juggling are also part of this course. Students will truly amaze and delight their family and friends. Enhance the lives around us as we share the magic within us. Theatre Games Grades 6–10 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: Discover the fundamentals of improvisational comedy, build your self confidence, improve your storytelling skills, and learn techniques to think quickly on your feet. This spirited, fun course is designed for the student who wants to learn the essentials of theatre games or anyone who wants to improve their teamwork and communication skills. Through coaching, warm-up exercises, and creative performance games, students will learn how to be more spontaneous, trusting, and cooperative as well as how to listen in a fun, creative atmosphere. ART Fun with Fabrics Grades 6–10 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: Students will learn simple sewing techniques using both machine and hand stitching, embroidery, applique and quilting. Using these techniques, they will enjoy creating imaginative stuffed animals and wild creatures, wall hangings or pillows, a tote bag purse and more. 3D Sculpture Basics Grades 6–9 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: In this introductory course, students will be exploring the concepts of form, weight, mass, space and design through basic techniques of construction. Through a variety of projects students will gain direct experience with materials, tools and the process of sculpture. Students will address themes and apply principles in design and elements of art. Materials included. Exposure to Photography Grades 6–10 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Join us for an introductory course exploring the world of digital cameras and photography. Students will learn how to use a digital SLR camera and its functions, such as ISO, F stop and shutter speed. Shooting, awareness of lighting, d epth of field, composition, and content are emphasized. Hero Within and Without Grades 7–8 For 6 week students only (Available Period 2) Description: This in-depth exploration of the heroic tradition, from Beowulf and Arthurian legend all the way to superheroes and characters found in great YA (young adult) literature, will help students see heroic traits within themselves. Vocabulary development, elements of fiction study, group discussion, and writing creatively and analytically will prepare students for making the transition to high school Language Arts courses through our focus on this universal theme. Textbooks required. MATHEMATICS Algebra 1 Review Grades 9–10 For 6 week students only (Available Period 2) Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra 1 Description: Students will review ‘Iolani's academic year Algebra 1 curriculum in preparation for enrollment in Algebra 2. Topics include simplifying expressions, solving equations and inequalities with rational and irrational numbers, solving word problems, polynomials, the quadratic formula, factoring, graphing linear functions, and absolute value. 21ST CENTURY TOOLBOX The Science in Our Stars Grades 6–8 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 2) Description: Students will learn the basics of astronomy, which will include looking at the Earth as an inhabitant of the Milky Way Galaxy and our place in the cosmos. This course will use a series of fun hands-on labs, daily videos, and discussions to introduce students to the mysteries of the stars, planets, and the movement of the celestial bodies. Intro. to Laser Cutting Grades 6–10 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 1, Period 2, and Period 3) Description: Bridging art and technology, this course is an introduction to digital design specifically for laser-cutting. Students will work extensively with 2D software programs to design and create laser-cut projects using a variety of materials in the fabrication lab. Students will practice design thinking and develop the skills necessary to see an idea through from design to fabrication. Intro to 3D Digital Media Skills Grades 7–10 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 2) Description: Students will learn the fundamentals of professional 3D modeling software and experience how it is applied to a variety of industries. Building on a series of projects they will learn the process of designing, engineering, and revising practical prototypes. » Period 2 Course Offerings STUDY AND LIFE SKILLS Be an Entrepreneur Grades 7–9 1st Session (Available Period 1 and Period 2) Description: This introductory course is designed to support middle school students interested in entrepreneurship. Working collaboratively, taking risks, using their imagination and problem-solving skills, students create innovative business plans that address concerns in Hawaii's communities. In addition to building their own skill sets, they will have the opportunity to work directly with the founders of local corporations. Students will leave the course with a solid foundation and resources to pursue their own entrepreneurial projects. » Period 3 Course Offerings Hip Hop Grades 6–10 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 3) Description: Learn street dance set to contemporary pop and hip hop music. Improve your coordination and creativity through strength training warm-up, stretching, and exciting dance combinations. No experience required. Students may sign up for both sessions. Taiko and Culture Identity Grades 6–10 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 3) Description: This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of taiko performance through integration of performance-based learning and classroom lectures on cultural identity. Taiko, as it is performed today, is a very young art form born out of a revival of Japanese and Japanese-American cultural expression in the mid 20th century. Understanding the history of the art form, especially its development in North America, helps our learners empathise with the culturally diverse landscape of Hawai‘i. This course will root our learners in the “how” and “why” of the taiko performance practice, expanding their understanding of themselves and of those around them. ART Ceramics Grades 9–10 For 6 week students only (Available Period 3) Description: This course is a project-based inquiry into the design of clay vessels. Students see projects through a complete cycle of development from concept sketches to fabrication, glaze application, and firing. Using wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques, students develop an understanding of design as they develop their own sculptural vocabulary in a collaborative studio atmosphere. Materials included. Character Development in Clay and Print Grades 6–9 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 3) Description: This clay and print course explores characters and settings from celebrated stories. Hand-colored terracotta pots with accompanying characters, clay whistle figures, and sculpted rattles occupy the clay unit, while prints created from relief methods complete the printmaking unit. » Period 3 Course Offerings Mixed Media Jewelry Grades 6–10 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 3) Description: Students will explore a variety of materials for wearable pieces. The students are introduced to the basic knowledge of tools and materials while the focus will be on wire working and personal expression. Techniques included sawing, cold connection, soldering, stamping and bead making. Found objects will be incorporated and we will dabble in clay. Come join the afternoon fun! PHYSICAL EDUCATION & SPORTS Intramurals Grades 6–10 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 3) Description: Meet new people, make new friends and have fun. With an emphasis on leadership, team building, and the ONE TEAM philosophy, students will engage in a variety of activities. Students will participate in games, team sports, and water activities appropriate to their age and ability level, including hiking, paddling, and swimming. Off campus field trips and excursions will occur two to three times a week. Students should wear sunblock, athletic clothes, and non-skid, non-marking athletic shoes. Please bring a reusable water bottle and, on swim days, appropriate swimwear and a towel. Raiders Tennis Grades 6–10 1st and 2nd Session (Available Period 3) Description: This course is designed to teach basic tennis fundamentals and point play. This a great way for students to have fun learning tennis and receiving the exercise benefits at the same time.
