“Transforming Lives Through the Good News of Jesus Christ” ARDMORE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Ardmore, Pennsylvania 10:30 A.M., JANUARY 31, 2021 Fourth Sunday after Epiphany Livestreamed Worship Service
Welcome to Ardmore Presbyterian Church Welcome to worship at Ardmore Presbyterian Church! We are delighted you are joining us for worship this morning. We are eager to see you in-person when the church can gather safely to worship as a community of faith. The people of God are resilient because Jesus was, is, and will continue to be Lord of the Church. The Holy Spirit gifts Jesus-followers with praise, song, and prayer either in a sanctuary or at home on the computer. Over the centuries, Christians have worshipped in catacombs, homes, prison cells, desert monasteries, gothic cathedrals, country churches, and now, via the Internet. This virus will one day pass and we shall return to our sanctuary, but until that days arrives, let us be encouraged in Christ’s reign. Please find ways to remain connected with each other, your faith, and church. Like those who have gathered for 2000 years in unusual places, let us worship God! A message from Rev. Jason Grimes We welcome you warmly to Ardmore Presbyterian Church where we strive to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. We are especially thankful for visitors. If you have a prayer request, please email it to Rev. Jason Grimes at jgrimes@ardmorepres.org or call 610-642-6650x100. A recording or live streaming of Sunday’s service will be posted online at www.ardmorepres.org. Please spread the word to those who are interested in viewing our virtual worship. People’s response in bold type Order of Service GATHERING THE PEOPLE OF GOD PRELUDE All Glory Be to God on High Sherri Hansen (2019) LIFE AND WORK OF THE CHURCH Rev. Jason Grimes OPENING PRAYER CALL TO WORSHIP (from Psalm 84) Robie Lawlace How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! My soul longs, indeed it faints for the courts of the Lord; My heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God. Even the sparrow finds a home, and a swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, At your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Happy are those who live in your house, ever singing your praise. O Lord of hosts, hear my prayer; give ear, O God of Jacob! Behold our shield, O God; look on the face of your anointed. For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. O Lord of hosts, happy is everyone who trusts in you. HYMN How Lovely, Lord See page 9 CALL TO CONFESSION (Hebrews 4:15-16) For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Adapted from James G. Kirk) With Christ as our hope, O God, we stand at the gates of your sanctuary seeking your pardon. We confess that we have not worshipped you alone. Life makes its demands, and we push you to the margins. You are for leisure moments when our own work is done. Forgive us for our small minds and mistaken priorities. Through Christ’s intercession, lift the burden of sin from us and help us walk in freedom and in strength. Amen. 3
ASSURANCE OF PARDON Hear with grateful hearts that Jesus, the mediator of the new covenant, ushers us into the gates of God’s eternal dominion. By his own blood, he healed the estrangement between God and us, and by his sacrifice offers reconciliation to all who believe. In this Christ we have assurance that we are forgiven, and truly citizens of the heavenly city. PASSING OF THE PEACE Since Christ has opened his heart to us, let us open our hearts to one another, and God will be glorified. The peace of Christ be with you. Peace be with you. (Call two people in our church community today and pass the peace of Christ.) RESPONSE OF PRAISE CHILDREN’S MESSAGE 4
THE WORD PROCLAIMED PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. FIRST READING, Exodus 25:1-9 The LORD said to Moses: Tell the Israelites to take for me an offering; from all whose hearts prompt them to give you shall receive the offering for me. This is the offering that you shall receive from them: gold, silver, and bronze, blue, purple, and crimson yarns and fine linen, goats’ hair, tanned rams’ skins, fine leather, acacia wood, oil for the lamps, spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense, onyx stones and gems to be set in the ephod and for the breastpiece. And have them make me a sanctuary, so that I may dwell among them. In accordance with all that I show you concerning the pattern of the tabernacle and of all its furniture, so you shall make it. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. ANTHEM, Quartet A Covenant Prayer Dan Forrest (2012) I am no longer my own, but Thine. I freely and heartily yield all things to Put me to what Thou wilt, rank me Thy pleasure. with whom Thou wilt. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Let me be employed for Thee or laid Thou art mine, and I am Thine. aside for Thee, exalted for Thee or So be it. brought low for Thee. And the covenant which I have made Let me be full, let me be empty, on earth, let it be ratified in Heaven. let me have all things, let me have Amen. nothing. (John Wesley, 18th c.) 5
SECOND READING, Hebrews 8:1-7 Now the main point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a minister in the sanctuary and the true tent that the Lord, and not any mortal, has set up. For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; hence it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer. Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. They offer worship in a sanctuary that is a sketch and shadow of the heavenly one; for Moses, when he was about to erect the tent, was warned, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.” But Jesus has now obtained a more excellent ministry, and to that degree he is the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted through better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no need to look for a second one. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THIRD READING, Mark 14:53-58 They took Jesus to the high priest; and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes were assembled. Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the guards, warming himself at the fire. Now the chief priests and the whole council were looking for testimony against Jesus to put him to death; but they found none. For many gave false testimony against him, and their testimony did not agree. Some stood up and gave false testimony against him, saying, “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.’” This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON “Through, Of/In” Rev. Jason Grimes (Part III in a series on “Transforming Lives Through the Good News of Jesus Christ.”) 6
RESPONDING TO THE WORD HYMN Lord, When I Came into This Life See page 10 AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. ORDINATION AND INSTALLATION OF DEACONS AND ELDERS PRAYER OF ORDINATION AND LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. PREPARING TO MAKE OUR OFFERING TO GOD OFFERTORY, Quartet How Clear Is Our Vocation, Lord C. Hubert H. Parry (1888) How clear is our vocation, Lord, And love itself cannot unwind When once we heed Your call: Its tangled skein of care: To live according to Your word, Our inward life repair. And daily learn, refreshed, restored, In what You give us, Lord, to do, That You are Lord of all Together or alone, And will not let us fall. In old routines or ventures new, But if, forgetful, we should find May we not cease to look to You— Your yoke is hard to bear, The cross You hung upon— If worldly pressures fray the mind All You endeavored done. (Fred Pratt Green, 1981) 7
