Davidson College Presbyterian Church Sunday January 31, 2021 - 9:45 Worship Davidson College Presbyterian Church is a welcoming, affirming, and inclusive faith community where all are one in Christ. We are an Matthew 25, Earth Care and Stephen Ministry congregation on the corner of campus and community. Our congregation celebrates partnerships in Christ with the Sigona Presbyterian Church in Kikuyu, Kenya; and the Kilambe communities in Jinotega, Nicaragua; and Blythe Elementary School in Huntersville, NC. Together we seek to grow in witnessing to Christ in a complex world and to learn more about how to respond as disciples to the great needs of the world. Our sanctuary stands on lands once occupied by the indigenous communities of the Catawba people and our first worship space was built with bricks made by enslaved people. We remember them to God as we honor and recognize them in worship.

Is that You reign in me again Lord reign in me reign in Your power Over all my dreams in my darkest hour You are the Lord of all I am So won't You reign in me again Over every thought over every word May my life reflect the beauty of my Lord 'Cause You mean more to me Than any earthly thing So won't You reign in me again Lord reign in me reign in Your power Over all my dreams in my darkest hour You are the Lord of all I am So won't You reign in me again Lord reign in me reign in Your power Over all my dreams in my darkest hour You are the Lord of all I am So won't You reign in me again So won't You reign in me again So won't You reign in me again Call to Worship Ann Brindisi One: Just as the ABCs are the beginning of the English language All: So love is the beginning of the language of faith. One: Your love, O Lord, shapes our life together; All: And so we respond by loving you with our whole selves; body, mind, and spirit. One: We come into your presence to worship you and to learn your ways All: And so we trust you on our journey together as a community of faith. Let us worship God!
Blest Be the Tie that Binds Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love. The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. Before our *Father's throne we pour our ardent prayers. Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, our comforts and our cares. We share our mutual woes; our mutual burdens bear. And often for each other flows the sympathizing tear. When we are called to part, it gives us inward pain; but we shall still be joined in heart, and hope to meet again. From sorrow, toil, and pain, and sin we shall be free; and perfect love and friendship reign through all eternity. Prayer of Confession All: God of grace and mercy, you have shaped us as individuals and as a family of faith. Forgive us for the ways that we have hardened our hearts and held onto our own ways. Forgive us for resisting your wisdom and holding onto our own knowledge as a substitute. Forgive us for ignoring your words and your ways of love. Remind us that we are yours. Renew us in your love. Refresh us by the power of your Spirit, healing our brokenness by the wonder of your grace, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Time of Silent Confession One: Lord, in your mercy…. All: hear our prayer.
Declaration of Forgiveness Ann Brindisi One: The Lord is gracious and merciful. And our God provides all that we need to journey on in faith – set free and ready to live as God’s faithful people. All: Thanks be to God. Amen. Announcements and Minute for Mission Larry Lyon and Matt Wiggins Prayer for Illumination All: Light and lamp, O God. Wind and flame. However we imagine your Spirit; whatever our need at this moment, send us your Spirit, we pray. Lead us, guide us, hold us, and even correct us. Enable us to hear your Word so that we might be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. Amen. Time with Children Robert Alexander “Come and see, come and see, I am the way and the truth,” said he. “Follow me, follow me, come as a child, O come and see.” Scripture Reading Psalm 111 After each reading: One: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Musical Offering Anchor of Hope Dave and Stephanie Malushizky Scripture Reading 1 Corinthians 8:1-13
Sermon Learning the Language of Love Live Like That Sometimes I think What will people say of me When I'm only just a memory When I'm home where my soul belongs Was I love When no one else would show up Was I Jesus to the least of us Was my worship more than just a song I wanna live like that And give it all I have So that everything I say and do points to You If love is who I am Then this is where I'll stand Recklessly abandoned Never holding back I wanna live like that I wanna live like that Am I proof That You are who You say You are That grace can really change a heart Do I live like Your love is true People pass And even if they don't know my name Is there evidence that I've been changed When they see me do they see You I wanna live like that And give it all I have So that everything I say and do points to You If love is who I am
Then this is where I'll stand Recklessly abandoned Never holding back I wanna live like that I wanna live like that I wanna show the world the love You gave for me I'm longing for the world to know The glory of the King I wanna live like that And give it all I have So that everything I say and do points to You If love is who I am Then this is where I'll stand Recklessly abandoned Never holding back I wanna live like that I wanna live like that I wanna live like that Prayers of the People and Lord’s Prayer All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Sending Song I’m Gonna Live So God Can Use Me I’m gonna live so God can use me anywhere, Lord, anytime! I’m gonna live so God can use me anywhere, Lord, anytime! I’m gonna work so God can use me anywhere, Lord, anytime!
I’m gonna work so God can use me anywhere, Lord, anytime! I’m gonna pray so God can use me anywhere, Lord, anytime! I’m gonna pray so God can use me anywhere, Lord, anytime! The Session has called the annual February congregational meeting for Sunday, February 14, at 10:40 a.m. via Zoom The purpose of the meeting is to receive the annual report and to act upon proposed changes to the terms of call for the installed clergy. The link for the meeting is here: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83239074056 Generous Disciples Thank you to everyone who supported God’s ministries of faith, hope and help through Davidson College Presbyterian Church in 2020. The good news about your giving is that it was an increase over 2019. Thank you! The other good news is that we finished 2020 with a surplus through a combination of increased giving, higher than anticipated revenue, reduced expenses and cutting costs. In past years the Session of DCPC has tithed from its surpluses, giving 10% of the surplus to mission groups. This year the Session voted to give 50% of the surplus to mission agencies that are responding to immediate needs in our community and in communities where our partners serve, such as Kenya and Nicaragua. Thank you to everyone who not only made an impact through our 2020 ministries but who are making an
impact through this extra giving to mission in the first month of 2021. Lives will be made better and more hopeful because of you. Since 1990, the Souper Bowl of Caring has collected over $163 million with 100% providing hunger relief in local communities and making that happen are more than 300,000 groups, including schools, businesses, organizations, and churches like ours. This year we are collecting for Loaves and Fishes on Sunday February 7th and Monday the 8th. Near the Congregation House entrance you will find two bins, one for Chiefs fans and one for Buccaneers fans and we'll see which team's fans can fill theirs up first! This means that when a member or friend of DCPC reaches out for pastoral care or pastoral services, we always have someone available to assist. In fact, having such a large group of clergy means that we get to organize our care in ways that support members, make best use of staff time and honor relationships. Click here for a few things to know about pastoral care at DCPC. DCPC Stephen Ministers are Here for You We are all living in a very different world in 2021. We find ourselves in a thicket of problems: COVID-19, financial struggles, job loss, increased parental responsibility. Throughout it all, we have less access to our friends and limited contact with our loved ones. There is a path to help you move forward through the confusion and isolation. Sometimes listening is what we truly need to help process our range of emotions. Fully trained Stephen Ministers at DCPC are ready to offer Christ centered caring. We cannot fix your problems, but we can provide tangible evidence of God’s love through caring. Strict confidentiality in a one on- one relationship can give you a place to talk and be heard. If you are in need of a Stephen minister, please visit DCPC.org and click on the links to Stephen Ministry, speak to one of our DCPC pastors (704-892-5641) or call Rosemary Raynal, Stephen Leader (678-429-8480).
