Lectionary Summary
Today’s Readings:       Isaiah 29:11–19          Ephesians 5:22–33              Mark 7:1–13

The True Tradition of the Church Is the Ministry of the Gospel of Christ Jesus, Her Savior

The true tradition of the Church is the Gospel, which is the preaching and administration of
Christ Jesus. Other traditions, although not commanded by God, may serve and support that
sacred tradition of the Gospel. But the Church dare not “[reject] the commandment of God” in
order to establish or hold to “the tradition of men” (Mark 7:8–9). Sinful people attempt to
draw near to the Lord “with their mouth” and to honor Him “with their lips,” while their
hearts are far removed from Him (Is. 29:13). Yet, He is “the Holy One of Israel,” who brings
about salvation by His cross. Therefore, “the wisdom of their wise men shall perish,” but “the
deaf shall hear” and “the eyes of the blind shall see” (Is. 29:14–19). This mystery of Christ is
profound, for He is the husband of the Church, and He is her Savior. Not because of any works
that she has done, but solely for the sake of His great love, He “gave himself up for her, that he
might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word” (Eph. 5:25–
26).
acceptable to God” (Rom. 12:1) through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Opening Hymn LSB 803 Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee

1 Joyful, joyful we adore Thee,
    God of glory, Lord of love!
  Hearts unfold like flow’rs before Thee,
    Praising Thee, their sun above.
  Melt the clouds of sin and sadness,
    Drive the gloom of doubt away.
  Giver of immortal gladness,
    Fill us with the light of day.

2 All Thy works with joy surround Thee,
     Earth and heav’n reflect Thy rays,
  Stars and angels sing around Thee,
     Center of unbroken praise.
  Field and forest, vale and mountain,
     Flow’ry meadow, flashing sea,
  Chanting bird, and flowing fountain
     Call us to rejoice in Thee.

3 Thou art giving and forgiving,
    Ever blessing, ever blest,
  Wellspring of the joy of living,
    Ocean-depth of happy rest!
  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
    Fountainhead of love divine:
  Joyful, we Thy heav’n inherit!
    Joyful, we by grace are Thine!

Invocation
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C   Amen.

Confession and Absolution
P Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C who made heaven and earth.
P If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?
C But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.

                                             3
Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.
The Second Commandment
You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, but call upon it in every
trouble, pray, praise and give thanks.

P O almighty God, merciful Father,
C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with
    which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and
    eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of
    them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy,
    innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to
    be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.
P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained
    servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead
    and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the
    name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C   Amen.

                               Service of the Word
Introit
P O LORD, I love the habitation of your house
      and the place where your glory dwells.
C Vindicate me, O LORD, for I have walked in my integrity,
       and I have trusted in the LORD without wavering.
P Prove me, O LORD, and try me;
       test my heart and my mind.
C I wash my hands in innocence and go around your altar, O LORD,
       proclaiming thanksgiving aloud, and telling all your wondrous deeds.
C Glory be to the Father and to the Son
      and to the Holy Spirit;
       as it was in the beginning,
       is now, and will be forever. Amen.
P O LORD, I love the habitation of your house
        and the place where your glory dwells.

Salutation and Collect of the Day
P The Lord be with you.
C   And also with you.
    Let us pray.

 L Gracious Father, Your blessed Son came down from heaven to be the true
bread that gives life to the world. Grant that Christ, the bread of life, may live in us and
we in Him, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
forever.
 C Amen.

Old Testament Reading                                                      Isaiah 29:11–19

 The vision of all this has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed.
When men give it to one who can read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot, for it is
sealed.” And when they give the book to one who cannot read, saying, “Read this,” he
says, “I cannot read.”
   And the Lord said:
   “Because this people draw near with their mouth
     and honor me with their lips,
     while their hearts are far from me,
   and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men,
   therefore, behold, I will again
     do wonderful things with this people,
     with wonder upon wonder;
   and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish,
     and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hidden.”
   Ah, you who hide deep from the LORD your counsel,
     whose deeds are in the dark,
     and who say, “Who sees us? Who knows us?”
   You turn things upside down!
   Shall the potter be regarded as the clay,
   that the thing made should say of its maker,
     “He did not make me”;
   or the thing formed say of him who formed it,
     “He has no understanding”?
   Is it not yet a very little while
     until Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field,
     and the fruitful field shall be regarded as a forest?

                                                5
In that day the deaf shall hear
      the words of a book,
    and out of their gloom and darkness
      the eyes of the blind shall see.
    The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the LORD,
      and the poor among mankind shall exult in the Holy One of Israel.

P This is the Word of the Lord.
C     Thanks be to God.

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark the 7th chapter
C Glory to you O Lord

Holy Gospel                                                               Mark 7:1-13

When the Pharisees gathered to [Jesus], with some of the scribes who had come from
Jerusalem, they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that
is, unwashed. (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their
hands, holding to the tradition of the elders, and when they come from the
marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions
that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and
dining couches.) And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your
disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?”
And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,
    “‘This people honors me with their lips,
      but their heart is far from me;
    in vain do they worship me,
      teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’
You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”
  And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in
order to establish your tradition! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’;
and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ But you say, ‘If a man tells his
father or his mother, Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban’ (that is,
given to God)— then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother,
thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And
many such things you do.”

                                              6
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.
Apostles’ Creed
C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
    And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the
    Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
    crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He
    rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right
    hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the
    living and the dead.

    I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of
    saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T
    everlasting. Amen.
     Hymn of the Day This Is My Father's World

          1. This is my Father's world, and to my listening ears
               all nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres.
               This is my Father's world: I rest me in the thought
               of rocks and trees, of skies and seas;
               his hand the wonders wrought.

             2. This is my Father's world, the birds their carols raise,
                the morning light, the lily white, declare their maker's praise.
                This is my Father's world: he shines in all that's fair;
                in the rustling grass I hear him pass;
                he speaks to me everywhere.

             3. This is my Father's world. O let me ne'er forget
                that though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet.
               This is my Father's world: why should my heart be sad?
               The Lord is King; let the heavens ring!
           God reigns; let the earth be glad

                                               7
Sermon
Prayer of the Church

The Lord’s Prayer
P Jesus, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:
C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,
     Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily
     bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass
     against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For
     Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Collect for Grace
P Let us pray. O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, You have
    safely brought us to the beginning of this day. Defend us in the same with Your
    mighty power and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of
    danger, but that all our doings, being ordered by Your governance, may be
    righteous in Your sight; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and
    reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Benedicamus
P Let us bless the Lord.
C   Thanks be to God.

Benediction
P The Lord bless you and keep you.
     The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you.
     The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and T give you peace.
C    Amen.

      Closing Hymn For The Beauty Of The Earth

      1. For the beauty of the earth,
      for the glory of the skies,
      for the love which from our birth
      over and around us lies;
                                               8
Lord of all, to thee we raise
         this our hymn of grateful praise.

                                                                                                   hymn continues on next page…

         2. For the beauty of each hour
         of the day and of the night,
         hill and vale, and tree and flower,
         sun and moon, and stars of light;

         Lord of all, to thee we raise
         this our hymn of grateful praise.

         3. For the joy of human love,
         brother, sister, parent, child,
         friends on earth and friends above,
         for all gentle thoughts and mild;
         Lord of all, to thee we raise
         this our hymn of grateful praise.
