LIFE IN MANHATTAN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Why Church Membership? Nowhere in Scripture do we see Christianity apart from commitment to community; we need community and we need to know what the expectations of that community are. Here are a few reasons why Church Membership is important for you, your family and the rest of the church. 1. Just like marriage is a bigger commitment than dating so church membership is a bigger commitment than attending. When you join in membership you are making a visible commitment to Christ and His Church. 2. We live in a world that is afraid to commit to anything, we wish to be a church that doesn’t just reflect the culture, but challenges it. Committing to a local church will help you understand what commitment is both to you and from you to others. 3. Church membership keeps us accountable to each other. When we join a church we are offering ourselves to one another to be encouraged, rebuked, corrected, and served. We are placing ourselves under leaders and submitting to their authority (Heb. 13:7). We are saying, “I am here to stay. I want to help you grow in godliness. Will you help me to do the same?” 4. Similarly, joining the church in membership will help your pastor and elders be more faithful shepherds. Hebrews 13:7 says “Obey your leaders and submit to their authority.” That’s your part. Here’s ours: “They keep watch over you as men who must give an account.” We take seriously our responsibility before God to watch over your souls. 5. Joining the church gives you an opportunity to make promises. When you become a member at Manhattan Presbyterian Church, you make promises to pray, give, serve, attend worship, seek the spiritual guidance of the church, obey its teachings, and seek the things that make for unity, purity, and peace. We ought not to make these promises lightly. (Adapted from a document Kevin DeYoung wrote on Church Membership) 4
GOD CALLS US Reflection \ “Restore us to yourself, O LORD, that we may be restored!” - Lamentations 5:21 "Christianity boasts of weakness, but makes the self vulnerable (different from merely authentic) to change and transformation. The authentic self says, 'This is me; you must accept me as I am.' The vulnerable self says, 'This is me; take me and transform me.' The vulnerable self comes in the form not merely of confession but of repentance. It looks not to self for power and affirmation, but to divine help and deliverance" - Collin Hansen, Our Secular Age Standing Call to Worship God invites us From Psalm 9:1-2 to worship Him, we respond to His invitation. Pastor: “We will give thanks to the Lord with our whole hearts; We will recount all of your wonderful deeds. GOD CLEANSES US Standing Prayer of Adoration Pastor Brian Hough This is a prayer of praise and adoration for who God is. You provide so much for us, blessings pressed down, shaken together, running over. Thank you for giving us the ability to give, and cheerful hearts to do it. Amen. Online Giving Option We learn in the Scriptures that giving is an act of worship to God. That is why we include an offering in the liturgy each week. We also know that in an era when we don’t use checks or cash very often, remembering to bring it to church with you can be difficult. In order to assist your desire to faithfully support Manhattan Pres the Elders have set up an online giving option. You can give via check or card; one time or a reoccurring gift. As always, all gifts are tax deductible under our 501(c)(3) status. To give online, scan the circle or go to manhattanpres.churchcenter.com We will always have time of offering in the worship service as well 12
PREACHING OF GOD’S WORD We preach from the Help Us O God: Psalm 79 English Pastor Brian Hough Standard Version. Bibles Isaiah 40:8 are available to “The grass withers, the flower fades, use and keep on the but the word of our God will stand forever.” Welcome Table. As the Bible is the primary means by which God speaks to and edifies His people, we read and listen to the Scriptures together in worship. In ancient Israel and the early church, services of worship were organized for the public reading of Scripture - a practice vital to building up the community of faith. A sermon is not just a teaching for living; it is mainly a time when Christ encounters His people through His Word. 13

GOD COMMUNES WITH US The Lord’s Supper Communion is a sign and seal for those who believe in Jesus Christ alone for the forgiveness of sin. It's not for good people. It's for you if you believe and embrace that you are worse and more messed up than you ever dare to admit; and yet you are more loved and accepted by our Savior than you had ever dared to hope - this is because of the life, the death and the resurrection of Jesus for you. You will be invited to come forward. We serve wine, but also offer grape juice (cups on the outside ring) for those who prefer for reasons of personal conviction. We offer a gluten free bread option for communion for those whose diets necessitate it. Please let us know in advance if you need this option and we can accommodate you. Children are welcome to come with their parents. Each child should talk with the elders about his or her belief in Christ before taking the Lord's Supper. Please contact us to do that at a future date. If you are not taking the Lord's Supper with us today, we don't want this to be an awkward time. You can come forward and an elder will pray with you or you may stay seated and pray one of the prayers provided on the next page. We're glad you're here today. Words of Institution Pastor: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: People: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Pastor: Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed for us. People: Therefore, let us keep the feast. Pastor: The gifts of God are for the people of God. Come eat and drink with thanksgiving. Prayer of Thanksgiving 15
GOD COMMUNES WITH US The prayers below are provided as guides for your silent, individual prayer during the Lord’s Supper PRAYER FOR THOSE SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH Lord Jesus, you claim to be the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent and convincing, and that leads to the life you promise. Amen. PRAYER OF FAITH Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserved in order to offer me complete forgiveness. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen. PRAYER OF COMMITMENT Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen. PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS I do not presume to come to this your table, O merciful Lord, trusting in my own goodness, but only in your righteousness credited to me. I am not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose manner is always to show mercy. Grant me, therefore, O Lord, the grace to commune now with Christ by faith, that I may evermore live in him and he in me. Amen. 16
