The Minister shall read aloud these Sentences of the Scriptures that follow. O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: let the whole earth stand in awe of him. Psalm 96:9 A great prophet has arisen among us! God has visited his people! Luke 7.16 1st Hymn #577 (Common Praise - Canada) God of grace and God of glory, on your people pour your power; now fulfil your church’s story; bring its bud to glorious flower. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the facing of this hour, for the facing of this hour. Lo, the hosts of evil round us scorn your Christ, assail his ways. Fears and doubts too long have bound us; free our hearts to work and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the living of these days, for the living of these days. Cure your children’s warring madness. Bend our pride to your control. Shame our wanton selfish gladness, rich in goods and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, lest we miss your kingdom’s goal, lest we miss your kingdom’s goal. Set our feet on lofty places; gird our lives that they may be armoured with all Christ-like graces in the fight for liberty. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, lest we fail ourselves and thee, lest we fail ourselves and thee. The Minister, turning to the people, shall say the Exhortation.
DEARLY beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness of the same by his infinite goodness and mercy. A general Confession to be said of the whole Congregation with the Minister. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, By what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, That we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, To the glory of your name. Amen. The Absolution, or Remission of sins, to be pronounced by the Priest alone. The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen. Minister. O Lord, open thou our lips; People. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. Minister. O God, make speed to save us; People. O Lord, make haste to help us. Minister. O give thanks to the Lord with your whole heart. People. On the day I called he answered me. Minister. God’s steadfast love endures forever People. Thanks be to God!
Canticle VENITE, EXULTEMUS DOMINO. said together. O COME, let us sing unto the Lord: let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and show ourselves glad in him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are all the corners of the earth: and the strength of the hills is his also. The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands prepared the dry land. O COME, let us worship, and fall down, and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For he is the Lord our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Today, O that ye would hear his voice: ‘Harden not your hearts as in the Provocation, and as in the day of Temptation in the wilderness; When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works.
Forty years long was I grieved with that generation, and said, “It is a people that do err in their hearts, for they have not known my ways”; Unto whom I sware in my wrath, that they should not enter into my rest.’ GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. PSALM 138 said together. I give you thanks, O LORD, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise; I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness; for you have exalted your name and your word above everything. On the day I called, you answered me, you increased my strength of soul. All the kings of the earth shall praise you,
O LORD, for they have heard the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the ways of the LORD, for great is the glory of the LORD. For though the LORD is high, he regards the lowly; but the haughty he perceives from far away. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve me against the wrath of my enemies; you stretch out your hand, and your right hand delivers me. The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Tell the good news of Jesus the Christ to all who are searching for redemption. This is the message we have heard from Christ and proclaim to you: that God is light, in whom there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with God while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true. But if we walk in the light as God is in the light, we have fellowship with one another.
And the blood of Jesus, the Son of God, cleanses us from all our sins. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, the One who is faithful and just will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. Tell the good news of Jesus the Christ to all who are searching for redemption. Listen, Lord Jesus, I am lonely too. Make me, friend or stranger, fit to wait on you. Jesus Christ is raging, raging in the streets, where injustice spirals and real hope retreats. Listen, Lord Jesus, I am angry too. In the Kingdom’s causes let me rage with you. Jesus Christ is healing, healing in the streets, curing those who suffer, touching those he greets. Listen, Lord Jesus, I have pity too. Let my care be active, healing just like you.
Jesus Christ is dancing, dancing in the streets, where each sign of hatred he, with love, defeats. Listen, Lord Jesus, I should triumph too. On suspicion’s graveyard let me dance with you. Jesus Christ is calling, calling in the streets, “Who will join our journey? I will guide their feet.” Listen, Lord Jesus, let my fears be few. Walk one step before me, I will follow you. Tous. Nous rendons grâce à Dieu. Poem The Unpardonable Sin Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931) Read by Nancy Ruth Jackson This is the sin against the Holy Ghost: — To speak of bloody power as right divine, And call on God to guard each vile chief's house, And for such chiefs, turn men to wolves and swine:— To go forth killing in White Mercy's name, Making the trenches stink with spattered brains, Tearing the nerves and arteries apart, Sowing with flesh the unreaped golden plains. In any Church's name, to sack fair towns, And turn each home into a screaming sty, To make the little children fugitive, And have their mothers for a quick death cry,— This is the sin against the Holy Ghost: This is the sin no purging can atone:— To send forth rapine in the name of Christ:— To set the face, and make the heart a stone.
THE CREED I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body, And the Life everlasting. Amen. Minister. The Lord be with you; People. And with thy spirit. Minister. Let us pray. Lord, have mercy upon us. People. Christ, have mercy upon us. Minister. Lord, have mercy upon us.
All OUR Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen. Then the Priest standing up shall say: O Lord, show thy mercy upon us; People. And grant us thy salvation. Priest. O Lord, save the Queen; People. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Priest. Endue thy Ministers with righteousness; People. And make thy chosen people joyful. Priest. O Lord, save thy people; People. And bless thine inheritance. Priest. Give peace in our time, O Lord; People. And evermore mightily defend us. Priest. O God, make clean our hearts within us; People. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.
THE COLLECT. GRACIOUS GOD, give us such a vision of your purpose and such an assurance of your love and power that we may ever hold fast to the hope we have in Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Second Collect, for Peace. O GOD, who art the author of peace and lover of concord, in knowledge of whom stands our eternal life, whose service is perfect freedom: Defend us thy humble servants in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in thy defence, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Third Collect, for Grace. O LORD our heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day: Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings may be ordered by thy governance, to do always that is righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Law. OUR LORD Jesus Christ said: hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and write both these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. Reflection Intercessions A General Thanksgiving, to be said by the Minister and people together
Accept, O Lord, our thanks and praise for all you have done for us. We thank you for the splendour of the whole creation, for the beauty of this world, for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of love. We thank you for the blessing of family and friends, and for the loving care which surrounds us on every side. We thank you for setting us tasks which demand our best efforts, and for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy and delight us. We thank you also for those disappointments and failures that lead us to acknowledge our dependence on you alone. Above all, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the truth of his word and the example of his life; for his steadfast obedience, by which he overcame temptation; for his dying, through which he overcame death; for his rising to life again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom. Grant us the gift of your Spirit, that we may know Christ and make him known; and through him, at all times and in all places, may give thanks to you in all things. Amen. A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom. Concluding Hymn #340 (Common Praise-Church of England) Who would true valour see, let him come hither; one here will constant be, come wind, come weather; there's no discouragement shall make him once relent his first avowed intent to be a pilgrim. Whoso beset him round with dismal stories, do but themselves confound, his strength the more is. No lion can him fright: he’ll with a giant fight, but he will have the right to be a pilgrim. Hobgoblin nor foul fiend can daunt his spirit; he knows he at the end shall life inherit. Then, fancies, flee away; he’ll not fear what men say; he’ll labor night and day to be a pilgrim. Dismissal
Minister. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord People. Thanks be to God
