The mission of Holy Cross is to communicate the love of God in Jesus Christ to our
members, community, and world, as we bring people to their Savior through baptism,
make disciples through education, and care for our members and community in acts of
love. (Matthew 28:19-20 and 1 Thessalonians 5:11)

578 Thy Strong Word
  1 Thy strong word did cleave the darkness; 4 From the cross Thy wisdom shining
        At Thy speaking it was done.                                                         Breaketh forth in conqu’ring might;
     For created light we thank Thee, From the cross forever beameth
        While Thine ordered seasons run. All Thy bright redeeming light.
     Alleluia, alleluia!                                                                   Alleluia, alleluia!
        Praise to Thee who light dost send! Praise to Thee who light dost send!
     Alleluia, alleluia!                                                                   Alleluia, alleluia!
        Alleluia without end! Alleluia without end!

   2 Lo, on those who dwelt in darkness, 5 Give us lips to sing Thy glory,
          Dark as night and deep as death, Tongues Thy mercy to proclaim,
        Broke the light of Thy salvation, Throats that shout the hope that fills us,
          Breathed Thine own life-breathing breath. Mouths to speak Thy holy name.
        Alleluia, alleluia!                                                                Alleluia, alleluia!
          Praise to Thee who light dost send! May the light which Thou dost send
        Alleluia, alleluia! Fill our songs with alleluias,
          Alleluia without end! Alleluias without end!

   3 Thy strong Word bespeaks us righteous; D 6 God the Father, light-creator,
          Bright with Thine own holiness, To Thee laud and honor be.
        Glorious now, we press toward glory, To Thee, Light of Light begotten,
          And our lives our hopes confess. Praise be sung eternally.
        Alleluia, alleluia!                                                                Holy Spirit, light-revealer,
          Praise to Thee who light dost send! Glory, glory be to Thee.
        Alleluia, alleluia! Mortals, angels, now and ever
          Alleluia without end! Praise the holy Trinity!

             sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for
             the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ,
             to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

941 We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God
      1 We praise You and acknowledge You, O God, to be the Lord,
          The Father everlasting, by all the earth adored.
             To You all angel powers cry aloud, the heavens sing,
             The cherubim and seraphim their praises to You bring:
          “O holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth;
          Your majesty and glory fill the heavens and the earth!”

          2    The band of the apostles in glory sing Your praise;
               The fellowship of prophets their deathless voices raise.
                 The martyrs of Your kingdom, a great and noble throng,
                 Sing with the holy Church throughout all the world this song:
               “O all-majestic Father, Your true and only Son,
               And Holy Spirit, Comforter—forever Three in One!”
3 You, Christ, are King of glory, the everlasting Son,
                   Yet You, with boundless love, sought to rescue ev’ryone:
                     You laid aside Your glory, were born of virgin’s womb,
                     Were crucified for us and were placed into a tomb;
                   Then by Your resurrection You won for us reprieve—
                   You opened heaven’s kingdom to all who would believe.

          4 You sit in splendid glory, enthroned at God’s right hand,
                   Upholding earth and heaven by forces You command.
                      We know that You will come as our Judge that final day,
                      So help Your servants You have redeemed by blood, we pray;
                   May we with saints be numbered where praises never end,
                   In glory everlasting. Amen, O Lord, amen!

Salutation and Collect of the Day
       P The Lord be with you.
       C And also with you.
       P Let us pray. Almighty and gracious Lord, pour out Your Holy Spirit on Your faithful people. Keep
            us steadfast in Your grace and truth, protect and deliver us in times of temptation, defend us against
            all enemies, and grant to Your Church Your saving peace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our
            Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
       C Amen.

First Reading                                                                                  Revelation 14:6–7
         6
           Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who
       dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. 7And he said with a loud voice, “Fear
       God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven
       and earth, the sea and the springs of water.”
       A This is the Word of the Lord.
       C Thanks be to God.

8:00 Anthem: "In Adam We Have All Been One" by Carl Schalk.
                                    sung by Diane and Bob Milkert, Stephanie , Lorelei and Brian Schuler

Epistle                                                                                                Romans 3:19–28
              19
                Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every
          mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20For by works of the law
          no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
             21
               But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the
          Prophets bear witness to it— 22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.
          For there is no distinction: 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified by
          his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25whom God put forward as a
          propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his
          divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26It was to show his righteousness at the present
          time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
             27
                Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No,
          but by the law of faith. 28For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.
          A This is the Word of the Lord.
          C Thanks be to God.
656 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
    1 A mighty fortress is our God, 3 Though devils all the world should fill,
         A trusty shield and weapon; All eager to devour us,
       He helps us free from ev’ry need                            We tremble not, we fear no ill;
         That hath us now o’ertaken. They shall not overpow’r us.
       The old evil foe This world’s prince may still
       Now means deadly woe; Scowl fierce as he will,
         Deep guile and great might He can harm us none.
         Are his dread arms in fight;                                He’s judged; the deed is done;
       On earth is not his equal. One little word can fell him.

      2 With might of ours can naught be done, 4 The Word they still shall let remain
             Soon were our loss effected;                            Nor any thanks have for it;
           But for us fights the valiant One, He’s by our side upon the plain
             Whom God Himself elected. With His good gifts and Spirit.
           Ask ye, Who is this? And take they our life,
           Jesus Christ it is, Goods, fame, child, and wife,
             Of Sabaoth Lord, Though these all be gone,
             And there’s none other God;                             Our vict’ry has been won;
           He holds the field forever. The Kingdom ours remaineth.

      P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the eighth chapter.
      C Glory to You, O Lord.
         31
           So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my
      disciples, 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33They answered him, “We are
      offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will
      become free’?”
         34
            Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35The
      slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36So if the Son sets you free, you
      will be free indeed.”
      P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
      C Praise to You, O Christ.

953 We All Believe in One True God
      1 We all believe in one true God,
             Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
           Ever-present help in need,
             Praised by all the heav’nly host;
           All He made His love enfolds,
           All creation He upholds.

          2 We all believe in Jesus Christ,
                   Son of God and Mary’s son,
                 Who descended from His throne
                   And for us salvation won;
                 By whose cross and death are we
                 Rescued from all misery.

          3 We all confess the Holy Ghost,
                   Who from both in truth proceeds,
                 Who sustains and comforts us
                   In all trials, fears, and needs.
                 Blessèd, holy Trinity,
                 Praise forever be to Thee!

       P Strengthen us by Your Spirit according to Your will, both in life and in death, in the midst of both
            good and evil things, that our own wills may be crucified daily and sacrificed to Your good and
            gracious will. Into Your merciful hands we commend Linda, Louie
            & Vivian, Gary, Max, Krissy, Sonja, Greg, Leo & Frieda, Nick, Patricia, Sandy, Virginia,
            Rosemary, Tom, Paul, Doug, Nancy, and all who are in need, praying for them at all times: Thy
            will be done. Lord, in Your mercy,
       C    hear our prayer.
       P Grant us our daily bread, preserve us from greed and selfish cares, and help us trust in You to
            provide for all our needs. Lord, in Your mercy,
       C    hear our prayer.
       P Forgive us our sins as we also forgive those who sin against us so that our hearts may be at peace
            and may rejoice in a good conscience before You, and that no sin may ever frighten or alarm us.
            Lord, in Your mercy,
       C    hear our prayer.
       P Lead us not into temptation, O Lord, but help us by Your Spirit to subdue our flesh, to turn from
            the world and its ways, and to overcome the devil with all his wiles. Lord, in Your mercy,
       C    hear our prayer.
       P And lastly, O heavenly Father, deliver us from all evil of both body and soul, now and forever.
            Lord, in Your mercy,
       C    hear our prayer.
       P We trust, O Lord, in Your great mercy to hear and answer us; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
       C    Amen.

       C And also with you.
       Almighty God, grant to Your Church Your Holy Spirit and the wisdom that comes down from above,

            Christ’s holy people, so that in steadfast faith we may serve You and, in the confession of Your
            name, abide unto the end; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You
            and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen.

  1 The Church’s one foundation 4 Through toil and tribulation
        Is Jesus Christ, her Lord; And tumult of her war
      She is His new creation She waits the consummation
        By water and the Word. Of peace forevermore
      From heav’n He came and sought her Till with the vision glorious
        To be His holy bride; Her longing eyes are blest,
      With His own blood He bought her, And the great Church victorious
        And for her life He died. Shall be the Church at rest.

   2 Elect from ev’ry nation, 5 Yet she on earth has union
            Yet one o’er all the earth; With God, the Three in One,
          Her charter of salvation: And mystic sweet communion
            One Lord, one faith, one birth. With those whose rest is won.
          One holy name she blesses, O blessèd heav’nly chorus!
            Partakes one holy food, Lord, save us by Your grace
          And to one hope she presses That we, like saints before us,
            With ev’ry grace endued. May see You face to face.

   3 Though with a scornful wonder
            The world sees her oppressed,
          By schisms rent asunder,
            By heresies distressed,
          Yet saints their watch are keeping;
            Their cry goes up, “How long?”
          And soon the night of weeping
            Shall be the morn of song.

+ SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT +

Invocation
      In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
      Amen.

Confession and Absolution
      O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and
      iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal
      punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of
      Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your
      beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

Absolution
      Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins.
      As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive You all your sins in
      the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
      Amen.

Psalm                                                                                                  Psalm 46
        1
          God is our refuge and strength,
            a very present help in trouble.
        2
          Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
            though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
        3
          though its waters roar and foam,
            though the mountains tremble at its swelling.
        4
          There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
           the holy habitation of the Most High.
        5
          God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
           God will help her when morning dawns.
        6
          The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
           he utters his voice, the earth melts.
        7
          The LORD of hosts is with us;
           the God of Jacob is our fortress.
        8
          Come, behold the works of the LORD,
            how he has brought desolations on the earth.
        9
          He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
            he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
            he burns the chariots with fire.
        10
           “Be still, and know that I am God.
            I will be exalted among the nations,
            I will be exalted in the earth!”
        11
           The LORD of hosts is with us;
            the God of Jacob is our fortress.
        A This is the Word of the Lord.
        C    Thanks be to God.
Lord’s Prayer

            as it is in heaven;
         give us this day our daily bread;

The Words of Our Lord
     Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks,
     He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you.
     This do in remembrance of Me.”

       In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them,
       saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for
       the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Distribution

After receiving the Body and Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ, we ask that you exit the sanctuary as directed,

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Can you imagine teaching your young child about Jesus Christ with out having any kind of Sunday school
  materials, or even a basic Bible storybook? This situation is a reality for many Lutheran churches around the
  world, but the Lutheran Heritage Foundation is helping to change that. Next Sunday, Rev. Timothy Schnare,
  an LHF representative, will preach at our worship services and share the exciting mission work LHF is doing
  worldwide.

Caregiving Ministry will be collecting items for a Mother’s Ministry in Fairmont City from October 25th through
