         God’s Word Today:
In today’s readings the risen Christ
ascends into heaven and his
followers are assured that the Spirit
will empower them to be witnesses
throughout the earth. The disciples
are told to not gaze up into heaven
to look for Jesus (Acts 1:11); we
find his presence among us as we
proclaim the word and share the
Easter feast. We too long for the
Spirit to enliven our faith and
invigorate our mission.

This morning’s complete worship is printed in this booklet.

WORD
FIRST READING: Acts 1:1-11
Before he is lifted into heaven, Jesus promises that the missionary work of the disciples will spread out from Jerusalem to all the
world, and that the disciples will be accompanied and empowered by the Holy Spirit. His words provide an outline of the book of
Acts.
[Luke writes:] 1In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the
beginning 2until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to
the apostles whom he had chosen. 3After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many
convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. 4While
staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father.
“This,” he said, “is what you have heard from me; 5for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized
with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
   6
So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, is this the time when you will restore the
kingdom to Israel?” 7He replied, “It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his
own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my
witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9When he had said this, as
they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10While he was going and they
were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. 11They said, “Men of
Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into
heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
L The word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.
Psalm 47 (Read responsively by whole verse)
     1
Clap your hands, all you peoples; shout to God with a joyful sound.
  2
For the Lord Most High is to be feared: a great king over all the earth,
  3
    who subdues the peoples under us, and the nations under our feet;
  4
who chooses our inheritance for us, the pride of Jacob, whom God loves.
  5
God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of the ram’s horn.
  6
Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our king, sing praises.
  7
For God is king of all the earth; sing praises with a song.
  8
God reigns over the nations; God is enthroned on high.
  9
The nobles of the peoples have gathered as the people of the God of Abraham.
The rulers of the earth belong to God, who is highly exalted.
SECOND READING: Ephesians 1:15-23
The risen and exalted Christ reigns over the entire universe. The author of Ephesians prays that we are given the wisdom to
know the power of the risen Christ and the empowering hope that the knowledge of this inheritance provides.
15
I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason 16I do not
cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. 17I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, 18so that, with
the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the
riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, 19and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for
us who believe, according to the working of his great power. 20God put this power to work in Christ when he
raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21far above all rule and
authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the
age to come. 22And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the
church, 23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
L The word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

                                                               4

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

The HOLY GOSPEL
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke the 24th chapter.
C Glory to you, O Lord.
On the day of his ascension, Jesus leaves his disciples with a commission, a blessing, and a promise of the Holy Spirit.
44
[Jesus said to the eleven and those with them,] “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still
with you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be
fulfilled.”45Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, 46and he said to them, “Thus it is
written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, 47and that repentance and
forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48You are
witnesses of these things. 49And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the
city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
   50
Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. 51While he was
blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. 52And they worshiped him, and
returned to Jerusalem with great joy; 53and they were continually in the temple blessing God.
P The Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to you, O Christ.

APOSTLE’S CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
    creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
    born of the virgin Mary,
    suffered under Pontius Pilate,
    was crucified, died, and was buried;
    he descended into hell.
    On the third day he rose again;
    he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
    the holy catholic church,
    the communion of saints,
    the forgiveness of sins,
    the resurrection of the body,
    and the life everlasting. Amen.

Serve Team
In a pre-pandemic world, the Saints would be preparing for our annual Spring Warm Nights
hosting week in late April and early May. While area congregations are not currently being
called upon to open their doors to shelter the homeless, the needs of the homeless and of CCSI's
support of them have not diminished. Therefore, the Serve Team appeals to all the Saints
who have participated in Warm Nights in the past to continue to support the program by
donating needed supplies this month. CCSI has created an Amazon donations list to made it
even more convenient for you to make a contribution. Please go to the link below to select the
provisions you would like to purchase:

                                    MAY IS SCHOLARSHIP MONTH
                                                by Roz Kleffman
2021 marks the 19th year for All Saints Lutheran Church Scholarship Program. This program has funded our
post high school youth (and one adult) attending college and trade schools. Covid-19 has changed the way we
all do things but for our youth attending colleges, Covid has created more challenges than ever imaged. Classes
on hold, classes canceled, virtual classes and housing commitments really caused financial
hardship on our youth and families. Covid-19 did not stop this program or our students. Three applications were
received by the January 24, 2021 deadline for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year. Nathan Braun, Mary
Greenawalt and Xander Summerlot submitted complete applications. There were no graduating high school
seniors submitting applications this school year.

The month of May is our big campaign month. Please consider making a contribution to the ASLC Scholarship
Program this month. Show your financial support for the youth of our church. Now is your chance to help these
three college students. Your donations to ASLC Scholarship fund go directly to these students. Scholarship
monies remind students that the "SAINTS" at home continue to support them where ever they roam. Thank you
to those "SAINTS" who faithfully donate to the ASLC Scholarship Fund on a monthly basis. Please know that
every dollar helps. Covid-19 may have curbed our normal activities but it will not stop the dreams of our youth
as they venture off to college. Now more than ever, these students need more financial help as many are without
jobs during the pandemic.

Congratulations to our 4 scholars - Sean Bettinger, Shannon Bettinger, Caleb Jacobson and Sarah
Jacobson who graduated in 2021.

Special thanks to Austin De Marco for monthly giving updates and Uzoma Ariguzo for
new website changes.

If you would like any further information about the ASLC Scholarship program, please
contact Louise Waynant, Millie Osborne or Roz Kleffman.

                                  Community Garden Update: Planting Day
Given the messages of support we have received, the team has decided to move forward with the project. As some
of you may have seen at April’s outdoor communion, we have staked out an area between the parking lot and the
woods for this project. The team is going to take care of tilling the land, securing plants and seeds, fencing the area
off more securely, and creating a plan for the garden layout. The planting day is set for Saturday, May 15, at
1:00pm weather permitting. Keep an eye on the bulletin and social media pages for confirmation of the date or any
changes we have to make.
We are asking for Saints, their family and friends to come out on the planting day; many hands make light work.
Even if you did not respond to the initial survey, you are welcome, regardless of experience level. We will have
special roles for the littlest Saints, and will teach them about how plants grow and where some of their food comes
from.
Please reach out to Deb Ariguzo and Emily DeMarco if you plan to attend our inaugural planting day. Everyone
will be asked to wear masks and socially distance as much as possible to safeguard each other’s health out of love.
We will, of course, joyfully accept walk-up help on the day, but having an estimated head count will allow us to
know how many tools and supplies we can expect to need. Several Saints responding to the survey indicated they
had their own garden tools to use, and/or tools to share. If possible, please let us know which tools you will be
bringing; again, this helps us know what we need to provide.

Calling all God Stories!
Has God been especially generous to you? Would you like to share your story about God’s generosity in
your life? Perhaps there was a specific occasion when you witnessed it, or you have experienced God’s
generosity throughout your life. The Stewardship Ministry Team would like to include these “God
Stories” in the Grapevine newsletter and during Sunday morning worship. If writing is your forte, please consider
sharing a short story for the Grapevine. If you prefer to share your story orally, our fabulous tech team can help
produce a two-minute video clip to include during the worship service. In either case, please contact Diane
Hampton, Stewardship Team Lead.
Thank you! Stewardship Ministry Team

HERE’S WHAT HAPPENS EACH WEEK
Defense mechanisms represent the “glue” that holds the personality structure in place. These psychological
structures support self-esteem and help maintain psychological well-being. However, they can impede growth
and development when used automatically or inappropriately.
Acknowledging and naming the defense mechanism is key to seeing how it operates in real life. In this workshop
series participants will practice observing their type's defense mechanism, the one they use habitually and often
unconsciously. Participants will learn how to ease the automatic use of their defense mechanism – becoming
more mindful. Each week we will explore the defense mechanism of three types.
       Week 1: Head types 5, 6, 7; Week 2: Heart types 2, 3, 4; Week 3: Body types 8, 9, 1.
