                   EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH

Serving all people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ

W elcome! Thank you for joining us for worship this morning. In our
service we gather before our almighty God to offer him our
worship and praise. We also gather to strengthen ourselves through the
study of God’s holy and powerful word.

 Restrooms are located in the hallway directly opposite the entrance
                to the sanctuary.

 Cry-room. If you have a young child or nursing infant and are in
need of a cry-room, you will find it to the left as soon as you exit the
sanctuary. A speaker there allows you to hear the service.

 Staffed nursery We offer a staffed nursery for ages 2 to 5 and
special needs children. It is currently located to the right of the entry
                foyer near the kitchen.

 Connection Cards are available inside each worship folder. We ask
that before or after worship you fill those out front and back. You can
place them in the offering plate or in the Connection Card box on
the way out of worship this morning. Online Connection Cards are
                also available at ourbeautifulsavior.com/connection-card.

WORSHIP NOTES
THE SEASON OF PENTECOST
The Sundays after Pentecost comprise the longest season of the Church
Year. After spending a half-year looking at Christ’s life for us, we now
spend a half-year looking at Christ’s life in us. By the power of the Spirit
working through the Word and Sacraments, Christ produces spiritual
growth within us. That growth is symbolized by the green colors that
drape the church for much of this season.

OUR WORSHIP SERIES
Our world is currently obsessed with questions about identity. But, this isn’t just a modern
phenomenon and it certainly isn’t restricted to one specific area of life. Understanding one’s
identity has been important from the dawn of human existence. Since your identity shapes
your purposes and goals and everything you do in life, having a clear picture of your identity
and where it comes from is vitally important. For the Christian, When it comes to the
important questions of identity, the Christian looks to God’s Word and asks, “Who am I in
Christ and what does that mean for my life?” Over the next several weeks we’ll do just that as
we consider the lives that flow from our Christian identity.

                                       Secure in the Storm
ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY
The entirety of human history is covered in our lessons from God’s Word for today. And all of
human history is revealed to be a battle of cosmic proportions, an epic struggle of good
versus evil. So the question for today is, “Which side are you on?” Are you on the side of the
Serpent or in the family of the Savior? As social norms and mores rapidly change in the world
around us, people often speak about “being on the right side of history.” They don’t want to
appear to have outdated views. They want to be in line with the mainstream. They want to be
thinking the same things as the majority. The Christian wants to be on the side of God’s Word
because in it we see who we truly are. In God’s Word we see that his story is our story and,
because our Savior is on our side, we have strength to daily overcome the devil, the world,
and our own sinful flesh as we look forward to our eternal victory in him. 3

             SERVICE OF THE WORD II
This service offers the congregation a form of worship that focuses on the proclamation of God’s Word.
Believers respond to this divine gift with prayer, praise, and thanksgiving.

INVOCATION
M: Blessed be the holy Trinity,  one God,
who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever.
C: Amen.

PRAYER
M: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open,
   all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden;
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name,
   through Jesus Christ our Lord.
C: Amen.

CONFESSION OF SINS
M: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins
And cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9

Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.
For self-centered living, and for failing to walk with humility and gentleness.
For longing to have what is not ours, and for failing to give thanks for what is ours.
For angry deeds, for hurtful words, for uncharitable thoughts, and for those sins we do not
    even remember committing.
For idleness in witnessing for Jesus Christ, and for squandering the gifts of love and grace.
For all the wrong we have done, and all the good we have failed to do.
C: Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.
M: God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin,
and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved.
In the name of  Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven.
Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit,
that Christ may live in your hearts through faith.
C: Amen.
M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the
atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I
forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son  and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.

                                                                                                    5
M: Let us pray.

PRAYER OF THE DAY
M: O God, the strength of all who trust in you, mercifully hear our prayers. Be gracious to us in
   our weakness and give us strength to keep your commandments in all we say and do;
through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
   one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.

                                            The Word 

FIRST LESSON Genesis 3:8-15
After rebelling against God and being thrown out of heaven, Satan, the leader of the fallen angels, turns his
attention to the crown of Gods creation—humankind. He succeeds in getting the man and woman to fall
into sin, but God in love has a solution to the evil worked by the serpent in the Seed of the woman.
    8
Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the
garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the
garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?”
    10
He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”
    11
And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I
commanded you not to eat from?”
    12
The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree,
and I ate it.”
    13
Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”
The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
    14
So the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,
“Cursed are you above all the livestock
            and all the wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
            and you will eat dust
all the days of your life.
         15
            And I will put enmity
            between you and the woman,
            and between your offspring and hers;
         he will crush your head,
and you will strike his heel.”

6
SECOND LESSON Revelation 20:1-6
Christ has defeated and locked up the one whose head he crushed, but whom we see so often in the temptations
that surround us and rise within us. Christ has redeemed us and made us heirs of eternal life and holy priests
before his Father. In him we are seen by God as offering up the sacrifice of lives cleansed by the blood of the Lamb.
             1
And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the
Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. 2 He seized the dragon, that ancient
serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. 3 He threw
him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving
the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set
       free for a short time.
            4
I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to
judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their
testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the
beast or his image and had not received his mark on their foreheads or their
hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5 (The rest of the
dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first
resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The
second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ
and will reign with him for a thousand years.

About Apocalyptic Literature
 The number one rule for interpreting Apocalyptic literature: it must agree with the simple, straightforward teachings in the
simpler portions of the Bible. Good Biblical interpretation says that you use simpler portions to understand the more
difficult portions. For example, Jesus says in the Gospels that no one will know when Judgment Day will come. That
means that it would be impossible for there to be a 1000 year reign of Christ on earth ending in Judgment Day (as some
have interpreted the above text). That means we would know when Judgment Day is coming. And Jesus says again and
again in the Gospels, in straight forward language, that we won’t know when Judgment Day comes.
 Apocalyptic literature, like much of poetry or impressionistic painting, is highly figurative. It is meant to give you an im-
pression of what something is like, not a literal description.
 In Apocalyptic literature, time is not linear, as is often the case with prophecy. For example, in Joel chapter 2, Judgment
Day is depicted as coming right after the day of Pentecost. Time is compressed. In Revelation, the entire New Testa-
ment era is looked at from seven different angles. Thus, it is not as if Revelation 1 to Revelation 22 is one, long timeline.
Rather, it depicts the New Testament era (Pentecost to Judgment Day) over and over again, focusing on different aspects.
 In Apocalyptic literature, numbers are figurative. 3 represents the number of God, the Trinity. 4 is the number of man.
10 is the number of perfect completeness, a number set by God. Combining numbers combines their meaning. So 7
(3+4) or 12 (3x4) represents God interacting with man. 1000 years (10 to the power of 3) would represent a perfect
amount of time, set by God. 144,000 “saved” (Revelation 7 and 14) takes two 12’s, representing the Old and New Testa-
ment churches, and multiples them with 1000, a number of perfect completeness. In other words, all those God predes-
tined to be saved will be saved. But that number is not a literal 144,000.

                                                                                                                                     7
HYMN OF THE DAY If Christ Is Charged With Madness

8
9
SERMON Mark 3:20-35
             20
Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd
gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even
able to eat. 21 When his family heard about this, they
went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of
         his mind.”
             22
And the teachers of the law who came down from
Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebub! By the
prince of demons he is driving out demons.”
             23
So Jesus called them and spoke to them in
parables: “How can Satan drive out Satan? 24 If a
kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot
stand. 25 If a house is divided against itself, that house
cannot stand. 26 And if Satan opposes himself and is
divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. 27 In fact,
no one can enter a strong man’s house and carry off his
possessions unless he first ties up the strong man. Then
he can rob his house. 28 I tell you the truth, all the sins
and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. 29 But
whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never
be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin.”
             30
He said this because they were saying, “He has
         an evil spirit.”
             31
                Then Jesus’ mother and brothers
arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call
him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him, and they told
him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for
         you.”
             33
“Who are my mother and my brothers?” he
         asked.
             34
Then he looked at those seated in a circle around
him and said, “Here are my mother and my
brothers! 35 Whoever does God’s will is my brother and
         sister and mother.”

CONFESSION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
                 maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
                 born of the virgin Mary,
                 suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
               He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
               He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
                 the holy Christian Church,
                    the communion of saints,
                 the forgiveness of sins,
                 the resurrection of the body,
                 and the life everlasting. Amen.

maybe said it or had someone say it to you. “Grow up!” We want people to
mature emotionally. Well, we want to mature spiritually too. Too often, when it
comes to our spiritual lives, we are content to remain childish — to know just
the basics, to keep our faith a Sunday thing, to do the bare minimum possible to
feel good about ourselves. That is not healthy. A plant that is not growing and
producing fruit is sick. Growth is an indicator of health, and we want to be spiritually healthy. To
grow emotionally, one needs time and experience. But spiritual growth occurs only in one way —
through the Holy Spirit, working through the Word and Sacraments. “Grow up!” Today we talk
about how to do just that when it comes to our faith because Christians are always growing in grace.

Coming Up at Beautiful Savior Summerville
This Week
 Today at Noon—Church Cookout —Please come back or stick around after 10:30 service.

 Wednesday, June 16 at 7:00PM —Midweek Bible Study: 21ST CENTURY CHURCH—Part
4: Chasing the Wind a study of Ecclesiastes meets in the sanctuary. Even though it’s an
Old Testament book, in Ecclesiastes Solomon teaches us about living in 21st century
America, a land where anything goes. We can live that life with God or without him.
There is a huge difference. Life with God has meaning. Life without God is like chasing
the wind. Join us for part two of this timely midweek study!

 Thursday, June 17 at 10:00AM—Midweek Bible Study (Senior Edition): 21ST CENTURY CHURCH meets in the
sanctuary. This is a repeat of the midweek Bible study specifically for our Seniors.

 Sunday, June 20—Christ Light for Kids at Home This Spring we are again offering the
familiar Christ Light for Kids curriculum for use at home. The videos will be available each Friday
for your convenience. If you would like to receive a packet of materials, please contact the
                      church office (bselc.office@gmail.com).

 Sunday, June 20 at 10:30AM—Father’s Day Bring dad or grandpa to church and we’ll send them
    home with something sweet.

 Sunday, June 20 at 8:30AM & 10:30AM—Worship SOUL SEARCHING—What is good? There is, in every person, a
need for soul searching. As we search our souls there are four questions everyone wants an answer to: Where did I
come from? What is life’s meaning? How do I define right from wrong and what happens to me when I die? In this
worship series we will have those questions answered by the One who is there from everlasting to everlasting.

Looking Ahead
 Sunday, July 18 at 4:00PM — Save the Date! Pastor Otterstatter's Installation Service. With a meal
to follow. Please indicate on the Connection Card if you are planning on attending. Watch your email
and future editions of the Bulletin for more information.
