Easter Acclamation Celebrant Alleluia! Christ is risen! People The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia! The Celebrant and People together say The Collect for Purity Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Gloria “Gloria in Excelsis” The Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the day of the Lord's resurrection, may be raised from the death of sin by your life-giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 4
THE LITURGY OF THE WORD The Lord speaks to us in scripture and preaching about how He has saved all humankind from the power of death by raising His Son to life again. We respond proclaiming our belief, praying for the world, and greeting one another in His Name. A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles Acts 10: 34-43 Peter began to speak to Cornelius and the other Gentiles: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ— he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. The Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24 Give thanks to the LORD, for / he is / good; * his / mercy / endures for/ever. Let Israel / now pro/claim, * "His / mercy endures for/ever." The LORD is my strength / and my / song, * and he has be/come / my sal/vation. There is a sound of exul/tation and / victory * in the / tents / of the / righteous: 5
"The right hand of the / LORD has / triumphed! * the right hand of the LORD is exalted! the right hand / of the / LORD has / triumphed!" I shall not / die, but / live, * and declare the / works / of the / LORD. The LORD has / punished me / sorely, * but he did not / hand me / over to / death. Open for me the gates of / righteous/ness; * I will enter them; I will offer / thanks / to the / LORD. "This is the gate / of the / LORD; * he / who is / righteous may / enter." I will give thanks to you, for you / answered / me * and have be/come / my sal/vation. The same stone which the / builders re/jected * has be/come the / chief / cornerstone. This is the / LORD'S / doing, * and it is / marvel/ous in our / eyes. On this day the / LORD has / acted; * we will rejoice / and be / glad in / it. A Reading from the First letter of Paul to the Corinthians 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you--unless you have come to believe in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the 6
grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me has not been in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them--though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we proclaim and so you have come to believe. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. The Gospel Procession Anthem “Easter Fanfare” Paul Fetler Easter Choir and Festival Brass Christ the Lord is risen from the dead, alleluia. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark Mark 16:1-8 People Glory to you, Lord Christ. When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint Jesus. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon The Rev. Ann Dieterle The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, 7
of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People In the power of resurrection, let us pray to the Lord, saying: Lord, have mercy. For the whole bright earth, so lovingly created yet so compassionately redeemed, that it may speak again of the glory and majesty of God, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For all nations and peoples of the earth, to whom God shows no partiality, that all may be transformed by mercy to live together in hope; for those in our Anglican Cycle of Prayer, pray for the peace of Jerusalem and our Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, All Angels by the Sea, Longboat Key; All Saints', Tarpon Springs; All Souls', North Fort Myers; Annunciation, Holmes Beach; Ascension, Clearwater; Calvary, Indian Rocks Beach; Christ Church, Bradenton, and for our Companion Diocese of the Dominican Republic, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the holy church, whose life is hid with Christ in God, especially Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Dabney, our Bishop; Ryan and Ann, our priests; Martha, our Deacon; Sonia, our Canterbury Chaplain, and Diana, our Seminarian; that in all its diversity witness may be made to one Lord, one faith, one baptism, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For all in high places of authority, and living into the resurrection life, that they may be led to govern with equity and justice, bringing life to those in the shadow of death, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. 8
For all who have been baptized and given the garments of light, that they, with the whole church, may be witnesses to the gospel in daily life, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For those celebrating their birthdays this week, especially Larry Wysong, Pete Calabrese, Joe Master, and Karilyn Jaap, that they may grow in grace as they grow years, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For all captives, prisoners, and those condemned to die, with whom the Holy One shares suffering and abandonment, that they may find strength, freedom, and forgiveness, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For all military personnel for a safe deployment, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For all who suffer in mind, body, or soul, for whom Christ is risen with healing in his glorious wings, that they may be comforted, especially Mark, Winifred, Vaughn, Rose, Robert, Jessica, Lindsey, Shirley, Taylor, Lynn, Michael, Charlotte, Christina, Connie, Arnold, Sr., Arnold, Jr., Barbara, Susan, Bill, Caitlin, Mark, Tom, and Lindsey, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For all who have died and for all who grieve, that in Christ who triumphs over death they may find light perpetual and blessed assurance, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For all gathered in this assembly, that we, like Mary and Peter and John may see the tomb empty, and joyfully believing, walk in newness of life, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. Celebrant Rejoicing in the risen presence of our Lord, we commend all for whom we pray and ourselves to Christ, to whom we give laud and praise now and forever. Amen. The Confession is omitted on Easter Sunday. The Peace Celebrant The risen Christ came and stood among his disciples and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ People Then were they glad when they saw the Lord. Alleluia! Celebrant The Peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. Alleluia! 9
The Offertory Anthem “This Joyful Eastertide” Dutch carol / Ledger Easter Choir, Festival Brass This joyful Eastertide, away with sin and sorrow! My, Love, the Crucified, hath sprung to life this morrow. Had Christ, that once was slain, ne’er burst his three-day prison, our faith had been in vain: But now is Christ arisen…My flesh in hope shall rest, and for a season slumber: Till trump from east to west shall wake the dead in number…Death’s flood hath lost his chill, since Jesus cross’d the river: Lover of souls, from ill my passing soul deliver…[George Woodward] †The Great Thanksgiving† Eucharistic Prayer B Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever say this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: 10
Sanctus Please kneel or stand as you are able. We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." Therefore, according to his command, O Father, We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; 11
And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Blessed Thomas, the ever Blessed Virgin Mary and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, They kingdom come, They will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 12
The Fraction Anthems “Lamb of God” (Agnus Dei) Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us peace. In the Episcopal Church, all baptized Christians regardless of denomination are welcome to receive Holy Communion. If you would rather receive a blessing, please come forward with your arms crossed. If you desire to be baptized, please speak with one of our priests. Communion After Communion, the Celebrant says Let us pray. 13
The Post Communion Prayer Please kneel or stand. Celebrant and People together say, Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen. THE SENDING OUT OF THE LORD’S PEOPLE We go out into the world having met the risen Lord to carry on the work of the women at the tomb, telling of His resurrection and the world’s salvation. The Easter Blessing The priest blesses the people, saying May Almighty God, who has redeemed us and made us his children through the resurrection of his Son our Lord, bestow upon you the riches of his blessing. Amen. May God, who through the water of baptism has raised us from sin into newness of life, make you holy and worthy to be united with Christ forever. Amen. May God, who has brought us out of bondage to sin into true and lasting freedom in the Redeemer, bring you to your eternal inheritance. Amen. And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you forever. Amen. The Processional Anthem “Thine is the Glory” Mark Shepherd Easter Choir, Festival Brass Thine is the glory, risen Savior, conquering Son; Endless the victory thou over death hast won. Lo, Jesus meets thee, risen from the tomb! Lovingly he greets thee, scatters fear and gloom; Let his church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, For the Lord now liveth; death hath lost its sting! No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of life; Life is naught without thee; aid us in our strife; Make us more than conquerors, through thy deathless love; Bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above… The Easter Dismissal Celebrant With the power that raised Jesus from the dead at work within you, go in the peace of Christ. Alleluia! Alleluia! People Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia! 14
