10:00 a.m. The Last Sunday after the Epiphany February 14, 2021 The Word of God Prelude Elegy William Grant Still (1895-1978) Opening Acclamation Blessed be the one, holy, and living God. Glory to God for ever and ever. Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. 1
The Collect Of The Day God be with you. And also with you. Let us pray O God, who before the passion of your only-begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain: Grant to us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. First Reading 2: Kings 2:1-12 A Reading from the Second Book of the Kings. When the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here; for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel. The company of prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you?” And he said, “Yes, I know; keep silent.” Elijah said to him, “Elisha, stay here; for the Lord has sent me to Jericho.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they came to Jericho. The company of prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha, and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lordwill take your master away from you?” And he answered, “Yes, I know; be silent.” Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here; for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on. Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground. When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you.” Elisha said, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit.” He responded, “You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not.” As they 2
continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha kept watching and crying out, “Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Second Reading 2 Corinthians 4:3-6 A Reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. Even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sequence Hymn Hymnal, #135 4
The Holy Gospel Mark 9:2-9 The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!” Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. The Gospel of our Savior. Praise to you, Lord Christ. 5
Reflection The Rev. David Erickson The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 6
Prayers of the People With a new light that shines in our hearts, let us pray. We pray for us, your faithful people, and those who lead us, that we may walk in your way of love and manifest your love to the world. Shine your light on your Church, And fill us with your glory. We pray for all the nations of the world, that those in authority will work toward peace and equity for all their people. We pray especially for these global concerns (N.) Shine your light on the nations And fill us with your glory. We pray for our nation and the community in which we live, that we be agents of healing and ever vigilant to threats to the integrity of our democracy. Shine your light on this nation. And fill us with your glory. We pray for those who are suffering in ways that are known or hidden to us. We pray for those who struggle mightily in this life and those whose light is dimming. For those who are ill and those who care for them. For those who are born today and for those who will die. We pray especially for parishioners, family and friends (N.) Shine your light into the seasons and passages of our lives And fill us with your glory. We pray for those who have been called into larger life with you, especially (N.). Shine your perpetual light upon them And fill us with your glory. We pray for people everywhere, that their lives may be full, that their families may be secure, that their hearts be filled with your peace. We give thanks for your radiance into our own lives, especially (N.) Shine your light on all your children And fill us with your glory. Holy God, lead us forward on our own journeys: guide us by your teaching and fill us with your compassion. We offer our prayers and our hopes with gratitude for your love and presence among us, through the power of God made manifest. Amen. 7
The Lord’s Prayer As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. 8
Hymn Hymnal, #129 Greeting And Announcements General Thanksgiving Almighty God, source of all mercies, we give you our thanks for all your goodness and loving kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation and all the blessings of this life; and above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ as we anxiously await his coming. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, 9
by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen. Blessing Dismissal Let us go forth in the name of Christ shining light into the world. Thanks be to God. Prelude Paean Kenneth Leighton (1929-1988) From riteplanning.com.
