9TH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST LUTHERAN BIBLE TRANSLATION SUNDAY JULY 25, 2021 SAINT PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH 4660 West 94th Street, Oak Lawn, Illinois 60453 (708) 423-1040 www.stpauloaklawn.org Pastor John Moeller Director of Music Ruth Sievers
As We Gather In his letter to the Christians in the city of Philippi, Paul spoke of the exalted Lord Jesus Christ. He wrote that, having completed His saving work, Jesus was to be worshiped by all people. So worthy is the Christ that “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow . . . and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:10–11). The work of Missionaries and Bible Translators is ultimately to bring glory to God by bringing the people of every nation and language into the circle of His grace. Prelude “Prelude in D Major” J. Dandrieu Opening Hymn “Christ the Eternal Lord” #829 sts. 1, 2 & 3 1 Christ the eternal Lord, Transform our thought and mind, Whose promise here we claim, Enlighten all who read, Whose gifts of grace are freely poured Within Your Word by faith to find On all who name Your name; The bread of life indeed. With thankfulness and praise We stand before Your throne, 3 Christ the redeeming Son, Intent to serve You all our days Who shares our human birth, And make Your glory known. And by His death salvation won For ev’ry child of earth; 2 Christ the unchanging Word Inspire our hearts, we pray, To ev’ry passing age, To tell Your love abroad, Whose timeless teachings still are heard That all may honor Christ today Set forth on Scripture’s page; And follow Him as Lord. Text: © 1999 Hope Publishing Co. Used by ermission: LSB Hymn License no. 110001400 Invocation A In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. A If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. A Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
A In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. C Amen. T WORD T Psalm Psalm 119:73–80 A Your hands have made and fashioned me; C give me understanding that I may learn your commandments. A Those who fear you shall see me and rejoice, C because I have hoped in your word. A I know, O LORD, that your just decrees are righteous, C and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me. A Let your steadfast love comfort me C according to your promise to your servant. A Let your mercy come to me, that I may live; C for your law is my delight. A Let the insolent be put to shame, C because they have wronged me with falsehood; as for me, I will meditate on your precepts. A Let those who fear you turn to me, C that they may know your testimonies. A May my heart be blameless in your statutes, C that I may not be put to shame! Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Your hands have made and fashioned me; give me understanding that I may learn your commandments. Kyrie LSB 152 A In peace let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy. A For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy. A For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy. A For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy. A Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. C Amen.
Prayer of the Day Luther’s Prayer to Receive the Word A The Lord be with you. C And also with you. A Let us pray together. C “Eternal God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, grant us Your Holy Spirit, who writes the preached word into our hearts so that we may receive and believe it, and be gladdened and comforted by it in eternity. Glorify Your Word in our hearts. Make it so bright and warm that we may find pleasure in it, and through Your inspiration think what is right. By Your power fulfill the Word, for the sake of Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. Amen 1 Old Testament Reading T Jehoiakim Burns Jeremiah’s Scroll T Jeremiah 36:1-3; 20-25 1 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD: 2“Take a scroll and write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel and Judah and all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah until today. 3It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I intend to do to them, so that every one may turn from his evil way, and that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.” 20So they went into the court to the king, having put the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the secretary, and they reported all the words to the king. 21Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it from the chamber of Elishama the secretary. And Jehudi read it to the king and all the officials who stood beside the king. 22It was the ninth month, and the king was sitting in the winter house, and there was a fire burning in the fire pot before him. 23As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king would cut them off with a knife and throw them into the fire in the fire pot, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the fire pot. 24 Yet neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words was afraid, nor did they tear their garments. 25Even when Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Anthem of Praise Solo “Thy Word is a Lamp” Amy Grant Epistle T Called to Be Holy T 1 Peter 1:13-25 13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for your sake, 21who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; 24for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, 25but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Holy Gospel T Signs of the Close of the Age T Matthew 24:3-14 A The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-fourth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the close of the age?” 4And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. 5For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. 6And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8All these are but the beginning of the birth pains. 9“Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. 10And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. 11And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. 13But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. A This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, He ascended into heaven and sits at the maker of heaven and earth. right hand of God the Father Almighty. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, From thence He will come to judge the living who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and the dead. born of the virgin Mary, I believe in the Holy Spirit, suffered under Pontius Pilate, the holy Christian Church, was crucified, died and was buried. the communion of saints, He descended into hell. the forgiveness of sins, The third day He rose again from the dead. the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. Sermon Hymn “Hark, the Voice of Jesus Calling” #827 1 Hark, the voice of Jesus calling, Loud and long the Master calleth; “Who will go and work today? Rich reward He offers thee. Fields are white and harvests waiting— Who will answer, gladly saying, Who will bear the sheaves away?” “Here am I, send me, send me”?
2 Some take up His task in morning, So the Lord sends forth His promise, To their Lord responding soon; Words of life and joy and peace— Some are called in heat of midday, Never void to Him returning, Others late in afternoon; Bearing fruit with great increase. Even as the sun is setting, Some are sent into the fields, 4 Hearken to the Lord whose coming There to gather in the bounty Marks the time when grace shall end, That God’s Word so richly yields. When with His angelic reapers He in glory shall descend. 3 For as rain and snow from heaven Soon the night, the final harvest; Water seeds in dusty soil, Soon the time for work shall cease. Causing them to bud and flower, Then the souls His grace has garnered Giving bread to those who toil; Shall enjoy His Sabbath peace. Text (st. 1): Public domain Text (sts. 2–4): © 2001 Stephen P. We are hoping when you go out to purchase school supplies for your grandchildren/children for the upcoming school year that you please consider purchasing an additional item or two; if you are able that could be donated to the Worth Township Youth Commission’s “Apple Tree Program” to help local families that are in need with new school supplies for their children. This is a program initiated and run by Worth Township to help families with financial difficulty. The program is made possible by local residents, church groups, and others to help families in need. These recipients apply and are carefully screened for eligibility through Worth Township. Our church is in the vicinity of Worth Township, so we will also be referring our food pantry clients to their service. Bags will be distributed during the month of August so if you can get school supplies to the FIA baskets by July 31st, that would be wonderful.
