New Visions Training Program Friday September 26 from 1:00-8:00 pm Saturday September 27 from 9:00 am - noon The context in which the church finds itself today is vastly dif- ferent from the past. New challenges face every congregation. One researcher noted that 55,000 churches will close in the next 30 years. To sit still & act routinely is to draw closer to this 55,000. The New Visions Program is designed to help leaders raise mission consciousness, to plan for mission & to imple- ment mission efforts in their congregations. Recognizing that change will be resisted less if associated with mission; the training also includes effective ways to process change. Upon returning to home congregations, participants will be equipped to teach this material to other parishioners, through the establishment of mission schools. The curriculum for the mission school has been developed by Dr. Pete Steinke, author of several best-selling books. His book, A Door Set Open, is the center of the learning. Compli- mentary materials include DVDs, study guides & a training manual. Trainers: Paul J. Blom has served parishes in California & Texas. For sixteen years, he was the bishop of the Gulf Coast Synod (ELCA). He led relief efforts after hurricanes Katrina & Rita. Peter L. Steinke has been a pastor, therapist, educator & con- sultant. He has authored ten books, including A Door Set Open, used in this training. For more info & to register, go to newvisions.us. Individual rate: $250.00; additional people from the same con- gregation: $200 Meals are included-Dinner Friday Night; Breakfast & Lunch on Saturday Please contact Teresa Kaldor at clcfaithform@roadrunner.com with any questions. 9
The big D Divorce Thru the Eyes of a Teen The big D is coming to Calvary starting in September. There are programs that minister to adults suffering from the effects of divorce & separation. There are programs that address the hurt & confusion of children when their families experience divorce & separation. But WHAT ABOUT TEENAGERS?! Being a teen is challenging enough, but being a teen whose family is in the maelstrom of divorce is even harder. This twelve week program is specifically designed for teens experiencing the affects of a broken family. It takes teens through the process of anger, sadness, change, forgive- ness & acceptance & helps them deal with divorce & living in a single parent home & also includes an element of be- ing in a blended family. The big D does all this in a way teens can relate to & is packed with activities teens love. Tuesdays Sept. 9-Dec. 9 @ 6:30-8:30pm Register today at: www.calvarylutheranchurch.org/life-issues--resources.html Join us…all are welcome…bring a friend! Energy Use Alert We have had dramatic increases in our energy use at Calvary. Most of our energy costs are from air condition- ing and lighting. We are asking that everyone take an ac- tive part in reducing expenses by turning off lights after use. If you adjust air condition controls in Fellowship Hall please return to original settings, usually off. We have placed guards on thermostats in the sanctuary. Please do not try to adjust or remove guards. Please keep doors and win- dows closed when A/C is on. Contact Al Schlegel for scheduling adjustments. 10
Donations needed for Classroom TVs & DVD Players The Faith Formation Ministry Team is excited about its new preschool & elementary Sunday School curriculum “Whirl,” which is lectionary-based (following the lessons in the worship service) & provides additional resources for Sunday School openings & worship bags. Each lesson includes a video clip for students to watch as a way to prompt discussion about the main idea that day. In order for us to implement “Whirl,” we need new TVs & DVD players for 5 of our class- rooms, which at present either have no equipment or outdated equipment. Work- ing with the Communications & Technol- ogy Team, we have identified the best options, which would also allow the TVs to be connected with laptops or used wirelessly. The cost of purchasing the equipment is ap- proximately $2000. Because this money is not currently in our budget, we are asking for donations to offset the cost of the TVs & DVD players. If you would like to donate toward the equipment, please write a check to “Calvary Lutheran Church” with “classroom equipment” in the memo line. You can place it in your regular giving envelope along with your weekly offering or drop it in the office. Thank you for your support! Loaned Items to VBS Did you loan us an item for VBS? Items are now avail- able for pickup and located at the VBS table. Thank you for helping us out. If you are unable to locate your item, please contact Patti Honda-Nations, honda_nations@hotmail.com or Marybeth Norgren, nor- stav@aol.com. 11
St. James’ & St. Leo’s Medical & Dental Programs In 1991 the late Dr. Dick Wheelock & Deacon Al Graf identified the need for medical & dental services for those who were working & living in the Solana Beach/Encinitas area but did not have access to medical & dental insurance. To meet this need, they established the St. James’ & St. Leo’s Medical & Dental Programs to provide quality medical & dental services to those with- out insurance regardless of age, color, creed or origin. The patients are pre- dominantly the working Hispanic population. These medical & dental pro- grams do not provide food, clothing or shelter to patients or the homeless. It was through the vision & commitment to serve others that the St. Leo’s & St. James’ Medical & Dental programs were established. That vision & commit- ment to serve others is alive & well today. The clinic provides comprehensive medical services which include physical examinations, laboratory tests & specific pharmaceuticals. Hospitalization & major surgical procedures are arranged through the Scripps Healthcare Fi- nancial Services Department & are preformed at either the Scripps Green or Scripps Encinitas hospitals. In the rare instance where a patient has insur- ance, he or she is referred to a physician who will accept that insurance. There is no charge for a patient to be seen. A donation of $10.00 is requested but not required. Approximately 40-50 patients are seen each week. The clinic is open Wednesday evenings 6:00pm to 9:00pm & on Saturday mornings from 9:00am to noon. It is not necessary to make an appointment. Physicians, nurses, receptionists, & interpreters are all volunteers; there is no paid staff. There are 14 medical doctors, 5 nurse practitioners, 6 registered nurses & 1 laboratory technician. The medical & nurse staff rotates clinic duty on a weekly or monthly basis. In addition to primary family medicine, various medical specialists are available either on site or by referral. This past flu season, St. Leo’s staff gave 300 flu shots including 80 here at Calvary. The Calvary Mission Endowment Fund recently gave a generous grant of $1,450 to St. Leo’s Medical Clinic. Donations to St. Leo’s Medical Clinic are tax deductable. Donations of unopened prescription & over the counter medi- cations are welcome. At present, the clinic does not need additional medical equipment. There is an ongoing need for interpreters and a pediatrician. If you or someone you know may be interested, please contact Gene Helsel for details. St. Leo’s Medical Program represents a missionary commitment made to the greater community. Calvary Lutheran Church is a valuable partner helping to fulfill that commitment. 12
