Judson Memorial Baptist Church From Travis. . . In the early 1960s, Hal David wrote down the lyrics to a song and asked his collaborator Burt Bacharach to compose the music. The song took about three years to complete, but once it was released in 1965, it climbed up the charts. It was wri#en as a peace song. What the world needs now is love, sweet love It's the only thing that there's just too lile of What the world needs now is love, sweet love No not just for some but for everyone As we enter the season of Advent, as we prepare for Christmas, as we close the 2019 year it seems like love is in short supply... The Sundays of December offer us an opportunity to enter an alterna*ve world and make room for Hope, Love, Joy, and Peace. Take the song and subs*tute Hope or Joy or Peace for Love and you have the makings of a perfect song for this *me. What are you Hoping for? Do you feel Loved? Where are you finding Joy? How are you experiencing Peace? Through the lessons and poems and songs and pageant and prayers, we will try and find and hold onto a li#le love (hope, joy, peace), sweet love (hope, joy, peace). First of all, we are looking for someone to change the sign on the corner of 41st and Harriet. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to do. We are also looking for someone to help out when someone other than a member uses an area in the church. This type of event does not happen very oDen but if you are willing to help out for a couple of hours that would be wonderful. Please let the office know if you can help out with either of these requests.

It will help us become an even more welcoming church. We will con*nue “Sign-In, Please” during Judson’s worship service. There will be a specific *me in worship for "a#endance sign-in.” Travis will announce and encourage all people (including children) to sign in, on the notepads, passing them down the pews. Then pass them back to the center, glance at who has signed in on your row, and leave the pads on the pews. The reasons for this are: to enhance our fellowship as we learn and remember each others’ names; to especially be aware of newcomers and occasional visitors to Judson; to receive informa*on, and; to track general a#endance pa#erns at Judson. A Welcoming and Affirming Congregaon Page 5 December 2018 6th ANNUAL HOLIDAY CAROL SING-AND-PLAY-ALONG Sunday, December 9, 2018, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. (with special “gathering music” beginning at 3:15 p.m.), at Judson Memorial Bap2st Church, 4101 Harriet Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55409 Are you looking for more connec*ons within the community or for a deeper sense of community? Are you looking for a chance to liD your holiday spirits? Would you like to have a chance to “just do something fun” without having to do a lot of prepara*on? Would you like to recall old holiday memories or create new holiday memories? Would you like to feel the joy of singing, playing an instrument, and/or listening to music? Do you enjoy ea*ng free cookies? Would you like to help homeless youth through the YouthLink organiza*on (see h#p://www.youthlinkmn.org )? If you answered “yes” to any of these ques*ons, you should check out the 6th ANNUAL HOLIDAY CAROL SING-AND-PLAY-ALONG on Sunday, December 9, 2018, from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. (with special “gathering music” provided beginning at 3:15 p.m.). Judson Church is located at 4101 Harriet Avenue South in Minneapolis. This sing-and-play-along event is free, and everyone is welcome. First, let’s talk about the singing part of the sing-and-play along. There will be word booklets for the songs (so it will be easier to sing all of the verses). Char and Barbara Engen-Mangskau (aka “CharBara”) will lead us in singing (and playing) modern, old, secular, sacred, tradi*onal, and new original holiday songs – such as Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming, the Huron Carol, Joy to the World, Frosty the Snowman, Jingle Bells, Silent Night, Christmas is Coming (a fun round), The Twelve Days of Christmas (with colorful posters), Home for Christmas (an original song by CharBara), a Hanukkah song called Shalom, and one or two tradi*onal holiday spirituals. Second, let’s talk about the play-along part of the sing-and-play-along. There will be several copies of easy instrumental books (Play a Song of Christmas books by Ruth L. Zimmerman.) We have books with parts for woodwind instruments, brass instruments, string instruments, recorders, guitars, and percussion. Each book has two parts: the melody line and (depending on the instrument’s range) either the alto part, the tenor part, or the bass part. Thus, the instrumentalist can choose to play the melody or one of the other parts—or even play the melody on some verses and the other part on other verses. So, while the people are singing, the instruments could be playing in four-part harmony. Plus, small hand percussion instruments will be provided for those people who want to add their rhythmic colors to the songs. Third, let’s talk about special musician guests. Steve Clarke and Laurie Knutson will be providing the gathering music using saxophones, a clarinet, and a flute. Van and Coletrane Johnson with be performing Christmas Must Be Tonight. The Gospel Five will be leading us in Go, Tell It On the Mountain and one other song. Finally, our “Rudolph Expert” will be leading everyone in a humorous, ac*on song. Fourth, let’s talk about YouthLink. YouthLink works with homeless youth, ages 16-23. Their website says, “ Whether it’s basic needs, like a hot shower or a warm meal, assistance with employment or educa*onal goals, accessing mental and physical health resources, or finding suppor*ve housing, we can help young people at all stages of their journey.” YouthLink’s vision is “a community in which all youth, without regard to their living situa*on, have an equal opportunity to pursue their goals and dreams and an equal likelihood of achieving them.” This fun sing-and-play-along event is free for all, and the cookies are also free. However, there will be a dona*on jar for YouthLink, and 100 percent of the dona*ons will go to YouthLink, i.e., all services, cookies, books, and other materials needed for this event are being donated. So, bring your instruments for playing, your voices for singing, your ears for listening, your tastebuds for ea*ng cookies, your playfulness, and your hearts to help us all support YouthLink and its vision, build community through music, and find our common human heart.
A Welcoming and Affirming Congregaon Page 6 December 2018 S&(#N$%" QP+%&$JL% (LS AL%^+#%, P(#& 2 I didn’t read Part 1 in last month’s “Messenger.” Can you summarize what was in it? Sure. Judson and Bethlehem Lutheran have a wonderful joint ministry called Starfish. Its purpose is “to respond to requests from persons in need of Emergency financial assistance for housing, u*li*es, transporta*on, and other basic needs.” So has Starfish been responsive to people in need? Yes. Starfish Ministry has assisted a total of 474 individuals and families over the past almost-eight years; many have been helped more than once. How do people learn that Starfish can help? When someone contacts either Judson or Bethlehem (by phone or in person) asking for help, he/she is given the Starfish number (952-686-4124). People we have assisted in the past tell others about Starfish. There are social workers, community workers, and pastors who know about Starfish. The word is out that we are churches which care. What happens when someone calls 952-686-4124? They get one of two messages: 1. to leave their contact and other informa*on, and someone will get back to them within 24 hours, or 2. we are out of funds for this month. What happens next? If there are funds leD and the person has leD a message, the Starfish duty team returns the call and either: 1. gets more informa*on and/or…. 2. schedules a *me to meet with the person, or…3. tells the person we are not able to assist them (but we tell them why and we tell them about other possible resources). What happens when you meet with someone? If it is a rental need, we would have already talked to the person’s landlord or rental agency, both to confirm informa*on and to advocate for the person. If it is a u*lity need, we will talk to the u*lity company (while with the person). Is the process complicated? No. One Starfish goal is to keep things simple and respecJul. With the person, we fill out a one-page “Starfish Applica*on Form,” make copies of the driver’s license or state I.D and lease (if rent assistance is needed). Bethlehem Church processes the applica*on. The payment is sent directly to the landlord or u*lity company. If Cub, MTC, or gas card(s) are needed, they receive them right there at the mee*ng. Where does Starfish get the money to give assistance? From your dona*ons to Judson and Bethlehem people. There are no overhead expenses with Starfish: 100% of donated funds goes toward assis*ng people in need. What can I do to help Starfish? Pray for those in need. Donate. Become a Starfish volunteer; all or any of the above. Contact Kathy or Wayne Urbaniak if you want more informa*on. Thank you.
