We welcome you to the new year! May your plans be fulfilled as you desired with the blessing of God and the protection of the Virgin Mary. O sacred and adorable Trinity, hear our prayers on behalf of our holy Father the Pope, our Bishops, our clergy, and for all that are in authority over us. Bless, we beseech Thee, during the coming year, the whole Catholic Church; convert heretics and unbelievers; soften the hearts of sinners so that they may return to Thy friendship; give prosperity to our country and peace among the nations of the world; pour down Thy blessings upon our friends, relatives, and acquaintances, and upon our enemies, if we have any; assist the poor and the sick; have pity on the souls of those whom this year has taken from us; and do Thou be merciful to those who during the coming year will be summoned before Thy judgment seat. May all our actions be preceded by Thy inspirations and carried on by Thy assistance, so that all our prayers and works, having been begun in Thee, may likewise be ended through Thee. Amen. Congratulations to Father Augustine Wayii on Receiving His PhD in Healthcare Ethics! Fr. Augustine graduated from Duquesne University this past week. He wrote his dissertation on “The Contribution of Global Ethics Approach to Health and the Environment in the Niger Delta Region, Nigeria”. He also has a Masters in Theology as well as in Educational Psychology, Guidance, and Counseling. What an amazing accomplishment and how privileged we are to have him as a part of the Divine Mercy Parish family! To God be the glory for my academic achievements. I appreciate God who is the source of blessings, wisdom and strength. To God be honor and praise for forevermore. I appreciate the bishops, priests, deacons and the lay faithful of the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh for the hospitality, love and care offered to me throughout the period of my studies. May God bless and reward you all. I appreciate in a special way the uniqueness of the Divine Mercy Parish family led by Rev. Chris Donley for the special love and care shown to me. May God bless and reward you all. Please be assured that when things get better, we may have the opportunity to celebrate together as a family. Thank you everyone, wishing you a merry Christmas! Fr. Augustine
PARISH STORIES The Red Door Even amidst the many restrictions of Covid 19 there is a powerful Christmas spirit at the Red Door! Thank you Alison and the United Health Care team! From Alison: Thank you so much for providing my coworkers and I the opportunity to “adopt” Mr. Hale this Christmas. My family and I really enjoyed being able to present the gifts to Mr. Hale in person and we had a lot of fun bargain hunting and shopping for all of the items on his wish list. So often when working with charitable organizations it is a faceless recipient of the donations so it was refreshing and heartwarming to be able to meet Mr. Hale and give the gifts in person. Being able to hear his warm laugh and kind words of appreciation meant the world to us. I admire all of the hard work that you, the other Sisters, and volunteers do for so many people on a daily basis by providing food and a warm place to go to. Sending lots of warm wishes for a Merry Christmas and a happy, and healthy New Year! Warmly, your friends at UnitedHealthcare, Alison, Kym, Devan, Marcie, Dan, Patti, Jes, Dave, Brian, Josh, Alexis and families “Wonder and Awe” Advent at the Red Door. As a volunteer at the Red Door on Monday evenings with Sister Emily and Sister Pawla, I have come to realize that our God is one of “Wonder and Awe” as experienced on a cold dark night in December. Standing at the Red Door, I glanced out into the darkness and commented that this is one of the most beautiful views of the city. There was a stillness in the night as the face of Jesus visited us in each of the guests and a haze hovered as it was the Holy Spirit, truly a holy moment. This was not the first time since several weeks before as I was leaving, William, one of our guests, alone in his wheelchair asked if he could pray for ME. How powerful that once again in the darkness love came alive as he ministered to me on that same street corner. Reflecting on this experience that very same night, I tuned into our Assumption Mission via Live Stream hearing the words of Father Chris Donley as our Assumption mission hit home. Father invited me to be drawn into the mystery this Advent seeing the love of Christ in Wonder and Awe. I now understand how the two experiences connected, knowing there are no coincidences, only miracles. As a Secular Franciscan, the story of Francis encountering the Leper inspires me. What a gift that we can see and be touched by the face of Jesus as Francis experienced more than 800 years earlier. Serving the vulnerable in the city at the Red Door touches not only our guests, but those who volunteer in a profound way and for this I am grateful. May God continue to bless this beautiful ministry and may we all experience that “Wonder and Awe” during this Advent Season. Peace and all Good. Mother Teresa Conference Year End Report 2020 “The fruit of love is service, which is compassion in action.” Mother Teresa To Our Parishioner Friends: What a year it has been for the Mother Teresa Conference in service to the parishioners of Divine Mercy and St. Benedict the Moor parishes, as well as the needy in our surrounding neighborhoods. Over the past twelve months we have assisted 54 friends in need with rent, utilities, furniture, clothing, food, PA Cares applications, and bus passes. It has been a joy to be able to aid so many and for that we say thank YOU to the St. Benedict the Moor and Divine Mercy parishioners! Without the financial support of our parishes and other SVdP Conferences, those we assisted right outside our church doors would not have been possible. Of the many stories we have from this past year, we delight in sharing how, with some clothing and moral support, we helped three adoring sisters charged with taking care of their intellectually challenged, oh-so-charming brother after his apartment burned down. A few short months later we attended their brother’s wake, after which the sisters wanted to give back by donating his clothing. There was so much to share, and all of it went to help those in need in our neighborhoods. Truly, our blessing to give turned into a loaves and fishes story of growing abundance. If being a part of this journey in aiding our Sisters and Brothers stirs your heart, please consider joining us. Just send an email or reach out to one of our Conference members at church. And, if your finances permit it, please consider donating to ‘SVdP –Mother Teresa Conference’ either via the collection basket at Church or online at https://svdppitt.org/donate/donate/ and list ‘Mother Teresa’ in the Conference designation box. 412-204-7446 or SvdpStTeresaPgh@gmail.com Fr. Chris’ Weekly Book Recommendation Recap As the reading of bad books fills the mind with worldly and poisonous sentiments; so, on the other hand, the reading of pious works fills the soul with holy thoughts and good desires. St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori Holiness and Living the Sacramental Life Fr. Philip-Michael Tangorra Emmaus Road Publishing Just outside the realm of visibility, the sacraments of the Church lie ready to effect real change in our lives. We need only to let them in. In Holiness and Living the Sacramental Life, Fr. Philip-Michael Tangorra lays out the mystical and invisible realities that are present during the celebration of the sacraments and explains how they can lead us to living ever more in tune with God. Read how the sacraments aren't empty ceremonies, but rather powerful, effective signs that bring grace crashing through the cosmos and into our world. See how beauty—expressed in art, music, and architecture—can bring us deeper into the mysteries of God. Fr. Tangorra teaches the average Catholic how to abandon a lukewarm spirituality and start living a sacramental existence, allowing God to imbue life with a constant sense of union and communion with the divine. Saint of the Week By our devotion to the saints, our heavenly brothers and sisters in Christ who have gone before us, and by their prayers of intercession, fraternal charity is exercised, which contributes to the unity of the Church and aids us on our pilgrim journey. Saint William of Bourges Feast Day: January 10 Saint William of Bourges was born at Nevers, France, to a wealthy family of Counts. His father planned a military life for William, but even as a boy, he was drawn to religious life. He had a great devotion to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and practiced penance without showing how hard it was. William became a priest, canon of Soissons, and canon of Paris. As a monk in the Order of Grandmont, he was noted for his austerities, his devotion and for the time spent praying at the altar. In succeeding years, he became abbot of Fontaine-Jean, in Sens; abbot of Chalis; and bishop of Bourges, receiving consecration in 1200, when the archbishop of Bourges died. He was grateful to be consecrated a bishop, but unhappy because of all the attention he would receive. He kept humble by performing penances for his own soul and for the conversion of sinners. Although William loved to be alone with God in the Blessed Sacrament, he knew it was his duty as archbishop to travel all over his diocese willingly. He celebrated the Eucharist, preached the faith and visited the poor and sick, to console them and bring them to Christ. Saint William, also known as Patron of University of Paris, died on January 10, 1209. He was buried in the cathedral of Bourges. Miracles were reported by people who prayed at his tomb. William was proclaimed a saint in 1218 by Pope Honorius III.
