St. Vincent de Paul Parish 2 Sunday Scripture Re ection Happy Easter to all! We celebrate today the great victory of God who raised Christ from the dead to new life. This day above all is a day to give thanks and praise to God because we too are invited into the new life of Christ. Easter is a me of great hope, when we proclaim that not even death has power over us. It is always a challenge to live this Easter faith in our world. So o en, and especially for the past year, it feels as if the power of evil and darkness has the upper hand, or they have already won. But with faith we proclaim that it not true. Jesus Christ is alive! He is not dead! Each of us and our en re world has been transformed and made new through the resurrec on. God’s love and mercy reaches its climax in Jesus’ death and resurrec on. God not only invites us to this new life, but freely gives it to all who ask. No precondi ons, no applica on forms, no background checks, no tests. This free gi of new life is ours for the taking simply if we desire to want to be a li le closer to God. All of us are at di erent roads in our journeys. Some have deep rela onships with Christ; others have more super cial ones. Many of us are somewhere in the middle. Yet each of us is invited to experience once more God’s loving mercy and generosity in our lives. Jesus comes to us in our hurts and wounds in order to heal us and make us whole. Each of us is invited to open a li le more to Jesus’ presence through our prayer and service. While there is s ll great anxiety and concern at this me, maybe today we can take some me to celebrate. Let go if even for a brief me and witness God’s love in your life and in the lives of the many who give of themselves to help others. The coming of spring and the expansion of vaccina ons gives us all hope that there is light ahead, that this most challenging year will soon be in the rear-view mirror. While we are not on the other side quite yet, I have con dence that this di cult me will end and that we can be a stronger people and Church. This too we can celebrate. Have a Happy Easter! St. Vincent de Paul Parish 5 Pray : Serve : Share Please Make Your Gift to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal Come, follow me … and bring hope to the world. Many families in our parish have received the Annual Catholic Appeal mailing from Cardinal Cupich. On behalf of those served by the ministries, parishes and schools who receive funding from the Appeal, we thank you for your gifts. Please return your response as soon as possible. The Annual Catholic Appeal offers a wonderful opportunity to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, follow me … and bring hope to the world.” This is especially important during these trying and challenging times. In addition to providing for ministries and services throughout the archdiocese, the Annual Catholic Appeal funds services in our own parish. When we financially support the work of our parish, our archdiocese and the Catholic Church throughout the world, we experience a feeling of deep gratitude, especially when we contemplate God’s many gifts to us personally. By sharing our wealth through gifts to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal, we demonstrate our commitment to the Church and each other. Please go to http://annualcatholicapeal.com to make your gift today. You may also pick up envelopes and brochures in the back of church as you leave. St. Vincent de Paul Parish 10 Re ection om Fr. Murphy Unbelievable The word “unbelievable” is an adjective meaning not able to be believed; unlikely to be true, so great or extreme as to be dif icult to believe. We often take great liberty in using it by applying it to believable things that seem extraordinary. “That touchdown pass was unbelievable!” “That sunset was unbelievable.” “This Covid-19 is unbelievable.” Nonsense, we see those things and know that they exist, so we have to believe them. When Jesus walked out of his tomb on Easter morning, that was unbelievable. Nobody had done it before or since. When God sent his only son to be our savior, that was unbelievable. Why would he do it? What makes the unbelievable believable is our faith. We believe God is our God and we are his people. We believe God is love and love is what we receive from God. We believe this whole week of going to Jerusalem with thousands of people waiving palm fronds is as true as the courts that condemned Jesus to death and the executioners who hung him on a cross. We believe he suffered and died even if we do not understand why these things had to happen. Believe the unbelievable. It is the empty tomb that characterizes our faith—more so than the cross. Let us be glad and rejoice. Email me at jpmurphy@depaul.edu Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord April 4, 2021 fl f fr

We have formalized a Ministry of Prayer by asking the members of the Vincen an Women and Men’s Prayer group to pray for your inten ons each day. We now would like to invite anyone from the parish to par cipate. If you would like to join, please email Leslie Linke at llinke55@hotmail.com If you have any prayer inten ons, please email Fr. St. Vincent de Paul Parish 16 News & Notes AN EMPTY TOMB PANTOUM Copyright 2021 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com On the first day of the week, an empty tomb, And Mary of Magdala is surprised! (For Mary sees the stone has been removed, And surely, she can scarce believe her eyes). Yes, Mary of Magdala is surprised There in the dark, this early morning dawn. And surely, she can scarce believe her eyes, So, off she runs to pass the news along. There in the dark, this early morning dawn, She posits that the Lord’s been whisked away. So, off she runs to pass the news along, But anxiously…her thoughts in disarray. Still positing the Lord’s been whisked away, She goes to Peter and the one Christ loved. And anxiously--her thoughts in disarray-- She tells them what she saw, her hope undone. Addressing Peter and the one Christ loved, She says, “They’ve taken the Lord from the tomb!” She tells them what she saw, her hope undone. “We don’t know where they put him,” she impugns. She says, “They’ve taken the Lord from the tomb!” So off the two go racing to the crypt. “We don’t know where they put him,” she impugns; But possibly, there’s quite another script… So off the two go racing to the crypt, With Christ’s beloved, the first one to arrive. “But possibly, there’s quite another script,” He posits, seeing just the shroud inside. Now Christ’s beloved--the first one to arrive-- Does not go in, but, pondering the cave, He posits--seeing just the shroud inside-- “There’s more than Mary’s take…here at the grave.” Not going in, but pondering the cave, He waits, then Peter barges on the scene. With more than Mary’s take here at the grave, The one whom Jesus loved saw, and believed. One waits; another barges on the scene (As Mary said, the stone had been removed). It’s our turn, now, to witness and believe: On the first day of the week, an empty tomb… Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord April 4, 2021 )
