St. Vincent de Paul Parish 2 Sunday Scripture Re ection How do we see ourselves? It is through prayer and re ection that we come to know and believe that each one of us is the beloved daughter or son of God, loved and made whole through Christ. Once we a rm this truth in our lives, it then becomes necessary to take the next step and answer the question, “Now what? When we recognize our gifts and our identity in a spirit of prayer, it calls each of us to gratitude. As we give thanks to God for the love we have and the many ways in which God has blessed us, we are able to see that others are also loved and blessed by God. I am not alone in my being loved, but I belong to a community of believers who love and are loved by God in Christ. In the Gospel today, Jesus calls the rst disciples into this community of love. Jesus asks Peter, Andrew, James and John to “come after me,” to follow and learn. Perhaps the surprising thing is that they do! They leave behind their jobs and families and walk with Jesus. How is Jesus calling out to us in our lives? How does he make himself known in the ordinary everyday events of our lives? What is he calling us to leave behind so we can come after him and be messengers of the Good News? Even in the midst of pandemic, social unrest and anxiety, the Lord is still calling out to us. He still invites us to love him and follow him As good as it is, it is not enough to simply a rm the truth that God loves me. We are called to action, to be a “ sher” of men and women, spreading the net of God’s love and healing to those around us. This is what evangelization is: helping others recognize God’s love and presence in their lives. To be a disciple means to spread this love and mercy and joy to those around us We can only spread this love when we are rooted in God’s love for us, when we are rooted in a relationship of prayer with Christ. This allows us to hear Jesus’ invitation to follow him, to leave our hang-ups behind and trust in his plan of love and peace for us. How we do so varies from person to person, because each of us was uniquely created by God and endowed with particular gifts. As we read this Gospel, I would like to note that Jesus is still calling men and women to follow him radically as the disciples did, to follow as priests, brothers and sisters in the vowed religious life. Don’t be afraid of Jesus’ invitation. Listen in prayer to what he is telling you. If you feel that you may be called to this life, don’t ignore it (trust me, it doesn’t work), but talk to someone about it. You are always free to speak with me about it, or to contact the Vincentian vocation director at 1-800-DEPAUL-1 or online at www.vincentian.org/vocations Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 24, 2021 fi fl ” ffi fi ffi fl . . .
St. Vincent de Paul Parish 3 Pray : Serve : Share Please Make Your Gift to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal Come, follow me … and bring hope to the world. Many families in our parish will be receiving the Annual Catholic Appeal mailing from Cardinal Cupich. On behalf of those served by the ministries, parishes and schools who receive funding from the Appeal, we thank you for your gifts. Please return your response as soon as possible. The Annual Catholic Appeal offers a wonderful opportunity to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, follow me … and bring hope to the world.” This is especially important during these trying and challenging times. Many in our parishes are affected financially by the pandemic, and we encourage giving at all levels to support this initiative. In addition to providing for ministries and services throughout the archdiocese, the Annual Catholic Appeal funds services in our own parish. When we financially support the work of our parish, our archdiocese and the Catholic Church throughout the world, we experience a feeling of deep gratitude, especially when we contemplate God’s many gifts to us personally. By sharing our wealth through gifts to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal, we demonstrate our commitment to the Church and each other. Please go to http://annualcatholicapeal.com to make your gift today. Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 24, 2021
St. Vincent de Paul Parish 4 Pray : Serve : Share HERstory: The 19th Amendment turns 100! A Music Celebration of Votes for Women Join us for a Night of Cabaret Music and History performed by parishioner, Anita Kallen. Wednesday, February 24, 2021 7:00 pm via Zoom After working together on the show Dangerous Women, Chicago cabaret artists Catherine Thomson and Anita Kallen have reunited to prove once again that “well- behaved women seldom make history.” They celebrate – in song and HERstory – the rabble-rousing pioneers who won the right to vote for the women of America. With music by Sondheim, Lennon & McCartney, the Sherman Brothers, Parton, Schwartz, Porter, and others, Anita and Catherine weave in the story of women’s suffrage from second-class citizenship at the nation’s founding to the nail-biting final days in the fight for ratification of the 19th Amendment. Please email Mary at mcarte40@depaul.edu by Friday, February 19,2021 for your Zoom link. All are welcome! Donations accepted. St. Vincent de Paul Parish 5 Pray : Serve : Share As we focus on the theme of Solidarity for the month of December it is worth mentioning that we are celebrating the week of Prayer for Christian Unity 1/18-1/25. Bishop Deeley offered thoughts on this week of Christian unity, “Though we, as Christians, abide in the love of Christ, we also live in a creation that groans as it waits to be set free. In the world we witness the evils of suffering and conflict. Through solidarity with those who suffer, we allow the love of Christ to flow through us. The paschal mystery bears fruit in us when we offer love to our brothers and sisters and nurture hope in the world. Spirituality and solidarity are inseparably linked. Abiding in Christ, we receive the strength and wisdom to act against structures of injustice and oppression, to fully recognize ourselves as brothers and sisters in humanity, and to be creators of a new way of living, with respect for and communion with all of creation.” Prayer for Week of Christian Unity Loving God, we ask that you grant us the spirit of wisdom and unity, so that we may be one, even as you are one with our Lord Jesus Christ - and he with you. Enable all the members of the body of Christ to live together in unity and fellowship with one another, and lead us into the paths of peace and righteousness so that we may be well pleasing in your sight. We ask you to teach us how to love one another as Christ loved us and help us to show one another the unusual kindness that can only come from knowing your Son, Jesus. May the Spirit stir up in our hearts a desire to be united as one, in the bond of peace and fellowship. This we ask in Jesus' name. Amen. Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 24, 2021

St. Vincent de Paul Parish 8 Pray : Serve : Share Vincentian Stewardship Snapshot Meet Mike Hannau Curious to know what happens behind the scenes at Sunday morning’s Facebook live presentation? At St. Vincent, we have our very own wizard behind the curtain—Mike Hannau. The people of St. Vincent de Paul Parish are un- questionably our most treasured blessings. The wealth of talent and gifts among our us is immeas- urable. Mike Hannau is one of those peo- ple who works quietly in the background while having an indispensable influence on how all of us come together every Sunday morning. When we initially went into lockdown at the outset of the coronavirus pandemic, Mike stepped up to offer his expertise in finding a solution to allow us to continue to come together in the liturgy. Leveraging his wealth of professional experience, Mike developed a temporary audio/video solu- tion for our weekly Sunday Facebook presentation. This temporary solution is now being converted into a perma- nent setup to allow us to continue the same quality of online program- ming once the pandemic is over. Mike is originally from Miami Beach, and is a graduate of Loyola University, New Orleans. He is a Video Editor/Engineer with thirty years of experience working in the industry. Most of that time was spent in the Northeast working with companies such as Sony and ESPN. Mike and his wife, Alex, moved to Chicago in 2017 and he currently works for Resolution Productions Group. In his free time, Mike likes to read, tinker with CAD design for video hardware and 3D Printing. Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 24, 2021

St. Vincent de Paul Parish 15 News & Notes ON CALL NARRATIVES, AND FOLLOWING THE CALL Copyright 2021 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com Call narratives. In a scriptural context, the term refers to stories of individuals being called by God for some mission. Look to Moses for a classic example. He’s shepherding his sheep when he sees the burning bush on Mount Horeb. The bush isn’t being consumed, though, so he goes over to check it out. “Here I am,” Moses says upon hearing his name. That’s when God tells him to lose his sandals, and introduces himself to Moses as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Then God tells Moses to go to Pharaoh to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. As call narratives go, this one is pretty dramatic. But a lot of the call narratives are pretty dramatic. In Acts, Saul’s story begins: “Now Saul, still breathing murderous threats against the disciples of the Lord…” Here Saul seeks authority from the high priest to go to the synagogues in Damascus so that, should he find any early Christians, “… he might bring them back to Jerusalem in chains.” Of course, as Saul is nearing Damascus, a light from the sky flashes around him, knocking him to the ground. A voice asks: “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” Saul answers, “Who are you, sir?” and hears “It is Jesus…” Then Jesus sends Saul-- now blinded by the light--into town to await further instruction. Yikes! And while call-narrative-ly speaking, today’s first reading (beginning with “The word of the LORD came to Jonah, saying: ‘Set out for the great city of Nineveh, and announce to it the message that I will tell you’”)!seems mild enough, don’t forget the larger call narrative that immediately precedes the passage the Church gives us today. The larger call narrative begins with “This is the word of the Lord that came to Jonah…set out for the great city of Nineveh, and preach against it; their wickedness has come up before me…” Jonah doesn’t want the assignment, so he sails away to Tarshish. Away from God. But enter the big fish, as God saves both Jonah and Nineveh in the end. By comparison, the call narrative in today’s Gospel is pretty laid-back. Jesus has just begun his public ministry, proclaiming that the kingdom of God is at hand and directing all to repent and believe in the gospel. Then, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, he calls to Simon and his brother Andrew--both fishermen--saying, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” They do. He calls to James and his brother John--also fishermen--next. They follow Jesus, too. Now, the reading doesn’t say precisely why the four leave their nets for Jesus, but they apparently find something compelling in the man. Which, even knowing what we now know of salvation, prompts the question: Do we? Per the Apostle Paul to the Corinthians, “…the world in its present form is passing away.” These words seem as timely now as they no doubt did then. Regarding discipleship, our own call narratives [be they dramatic (a burning bush?) or laid-back (a nagging feeling that God is nudging us in a certain direction)] are playing out all around us. Time to listen. Time to respond to the call. Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 24, 2021 )
St. Vincent de Paul Parish 16 Re ection om Fr. Murphy Ubuntu: A Lesson on Happiness from an African Tribe Parades should be happy occasions. Speeches on inauguration day should be about a bright new vision of the world. How can this happen today? Where will we learn it? Sometimes, the solution comes from a surprising place. Let me tell you a story… An anthropologist had been studying the habits and culture of a remote African tribe. He had been working in the village for quite some time and the day before he was to return home, he put together a gift basket illed with delicious fruits from around the region and wrapped it in a ribbon. He placed the basket under a tree and then he gathered up the children in the village. The man drew a line in the dirt, looked at the children, and said, “When I tell you to start, run to the tree and whoever gets there irst will win the basket of the fruit.” When he told them to run, they all took each other’s hands and ran together to the tree. Then they sat together around the basket and enjoyed their treat as a group. The anthropologist was shocked. He asked why they would all go together when one of them could have won all the fruits for themselves? A young girl looked up at him and said, “How can one of us be happy if all the other ones are sad?” In the new administration in Washington, DC, in the middle of the pandemic we are going to have to ind a way to get to the tree together.
