From the Pastor’s Desk Living on God’s Mountain Part II “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 7:21 We’ll finish up our current sermon series on the Sermon on the Mount in March. Chapter 7 ends with four sections on two choices: narrow and wide gates, true and false prophets, true and false disciples, and wise and foolish builders. Our society doesn’t like absolutes. Experts say truth can vary, it de- pends on your situation or everything can be rationalized or explained away. Je- sus believed in absolute truth because he said he was the truth, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” (John 14:6) When we read something in the Bible or hear a lesson or sermon from the Bible about something we don’t really agree with, we might try to discredit scripture, ignore scripture, or just try to explain that it doesn’t really say that. I worry when experts, ministers, or anyone tries to water down what scripture is teach- ing so they don’t have change their lives or beliefs and so they can also fall in line with what our current culture says is true. Chapter 5 of Matthew of the Ser- mon on the Mount is all about that as well as Matthew 23 when Jesus warned the Pharisees about twisting the laws of God. Jesus ends the Sermon on the Mount with this “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” (Matthew 7:24) We aren’t called to adjust his words but to put them into practice. There are two choices. There is a wide gate and a narrow gate. There isn’t a third option. It’s your choice. Jesus says only a few find the road that leads to life. I think that is why Jesus was not impressed with crowds during his ministry and we shouldn’t be impressed or swayed by crowds either. Let’s make sure where we stand with God while we have the time. Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security that scripture can be made to fit what we want it to fit. Jesus gives this ominous warning in Matthew 7:22,23 “Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plain- ly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!” Those verses should make all of us pause and examine our relationship with Jesus. The Sermon on the Mount gives us the blueprint to life that Jesus demands of us disciples. Build our lives on him and his words. Bend our lives and our will to him and not to what our society says is truth. It won’t be easy but it will have an eternal impact for you and your loved ones.
You’ll notice a few changes to Sunday morning worship. The Consistory ap- proved the hymnals, cards, and pens being put back in the pews as well as cer- tain sections of pews not being roped off. We still encourage the wearing of masks when you are up and around as well as social distancing. The Consistory continues to monitor the conditions in the county and are encouraged with the lower case numbers during the month of February. We are the lowest levels since June of 2020. We give God praise for this and for all the vaccinations be- ing distributed. Don’t miss the Wednesday night Lent services and the State- ments of Faith from our confirmands. We have great special music planned as well. Looking forward to spring and warmer temps. May God bless all of you with his strength and power. Brotherhood Minutes – February 22, 2021 Business Meeting – Abe Rohrbach opened the business meeting at 7:30 p.m. with approximately 25 members and guests in attendance. The minutes of the January meeting were read and approved after Norman mentioning that he had inadvertently left Jerry Wolfrum’s name off the Annual Brotherhood Report as Vice-President. The treasurer’s report was approved, showing a balance of $1,388.71. Under old business, it was moved, seconded and passed to give a $500 donation to the Grace Living Center in Clarksburg, MO. In new business, Abe opened nomi- nations for the office of president and secretary for a two-year term. Af- ter a brief discussion, the group decided to postpone the officer election until next month. Dave Meyer volunteered to assist Larry Rohrbach on the program committee. Abe called for members to volunteer for the de- votion and refreshments for regular meetings for the rest of the year. He then invited any interested member to attend the meeting of the church cabinet on Sunday, March 7 at 4:00 p.m. The meeting was adjourned. Devotion – Steven Burger presented the devotion on the topic of free- dom. He referenced Romans 8:18 & 21 and Galatians 5:1. He dis- cussed the struggle between individual freedom and societal needs and restrictions. People thought Jesus would come and free us from oppres- sion as a good king with power, but he instead came to free us from our own sin and eternal condemnation. True freedom occurs when we elect to bring God, the Holy Spirit and the redeeming love of Christ Jesus into our lives. Program – Pastor Cobb introduced Anna Maria Hendrix and her hus- band Keith as the program for the evening. Anna Maria and Keith live on a farm on the north side of the Moniteau creek on highway 87. Anna Maria spent her early years in Cuba and emigrated to the United States in November, 1963 with her father and mother at age 16. She had two brothers who had already emigrated before them. She shared memories of the situation in Cuba during and after the revolution – - 1/1959 – Fidel Castro and his regime came down out of the mountains with a large military presence and took over the gov- ernment – excited crowds lined the streets.
- there were executions of many previous government officials. - over time, the Castro regime took control of all property, start- ing with government properties, especially those owned by U.S. interests, then property owned by the wealthy and on down the line until everything was under government control. All bank accounts were frozen. Store owners handed their keys and merchandise to government officials. - food was rationed with ration cards, with only limited and poor quality provisions for common folks. - Anna Maria’s father was a doctor (anesthesiologist). The hospi- tals were poorly staffed and buildings and equipment fell into disrepair and medicines scarce or impossible to get. - people could only leave Cuba with permission from the govern- ment. Anna Maria’s two brothers emigrated when they had the chance. - Anna Maria and her parents received permission to leave and flew to Mexico in November, 1963. Before they left, govern- ment officials came to their home to inventory everything in their home. They were allowed to leave the country with five changes of clothes and little else. All they had with them ended up in one bag. After spending a couple of months in Mexico, they flew to the U.S. Their immigration sponsor was a doctor who was a friend of Anna Maria’s dad. Her father worked hard to learn the language and pass the medical exams necessary to practice here. They ended up living in Georgia, where she met Keith who was stationed there in the service. Keith grew up in Jefferson City. - Anna Maria applied for and received her citizenship five years after they arrived in the U.S. - Keith and Anna Maria have two sons, one in Oregon and one in Chicago. Refreshments – Great refreshments were served by Larry Rohrbach.
