The Key June 2018 Lutheran & Anglican Ministries of the Bruce Peninsula St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran, Wiarton & The Anglican Parish of the Bruce Peninsula P.O. Box 608 Wiarton, Ontario N0H 2T0 519.534.1604 (O) -- www.laamb.ca Our Life Has Been Evolving Since The Big Bang It is several years since I first read a book by a social psychologist. In the introduction he quoted Charles Darwin’s ”Descent of Man” as saying, “our strongest instinct is sympathy”. This would imply survival of the kindest. The psychologist then went on to quote Confucius talking about respect for others. This is an idea some three or four thousand years old that was taught in Chinese and Japanese schools into the early twentieth century and is still evident in Asian cultures today. Later I read books by the present Dalai Lama in which he writes, “if you want to be happy, practice compassion, if you want to make others happy, practice compassion. These sound like novel ideas in a global society which focuses on the self and fierce competition. Nevertheless, these ideas are growing among a number of experts in many fields of endeavor where they are being researched more closely by people working independently and these days more are working interdependently which is a hopeful sign of co-operation. Recently the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu spent a week together celebrating the Dalai Lama’s eightieth birthday. Douglas Abrams, who has authored some books with the Archbishop, was present for the week including some private interviews and the birthday party with the Tibetan school children in exile in India. This resulted in “The Book of Joy”, subtitled, “Lasting Happiness in a Changing World”. Along the way, in my retirement I have read a number of children’s books, books on the environment, physics, evolution, theology and spirituality, religion, medicine, self-care and developing a positive healthy perspective. It has been an inspiring journey. My latest reading included “The Secret Life of Trees”. For me, it was a humbling experience as I realized we human beings have often failed to live up to our true nature as loving children of a loving God, who through some thirty five years of daily Bible reading and other studies I have come to know as the sacred whole, whose name is I Am Becoming Who I Am Becoming, always, everywhere, becoming, freeing, healing, nurturing and sustaining, in whom everything is an interdependent part evolving from a big bang thirteen point seven or eight billion years ago. 1
I delight in being part of the process knowing the light always shines in the darkness, our cup always overflows and we are never alone. As the Easter season draws to a close I look forward to reading once again the Bible stories which remind us of the life and love of Jesus and of the other followers of the One we often call simply Love, the One who calls us into the fullness of life and love, here and now. Hopefully we are learning Love is what makes the universe, as we know it, the wonderful, beautiful thing it continues to become and for which we joyfully give thanks in our daily lives. The Venerable Bob Snelling + The Season After Pentecost Spring, Renewal, New Beginnings, a Time of Growth What an appropriate time to welcome new beginnings here in the Bruce. We have lost, and have grieved. We have gotten to know and love others who have come to support, and comfort us through this difficult time. To each of you we extend our love and sincere appreciation. With your help, we are now ready for new beginnings. Welcome to the Lutheran and Anglican Ministries of the Bruce Peninsula Pastor Perry, Lore and Family we are glad you are here! 2

Stewardship Committee for ministry – a pastor/priest to lead us and offer May 9, 2018 the sacraments, the organist to keep the music flowing and the office coordinator to take care of the administrative tasks. At the meeting today we looked at the nitty gritty of the stewardship campaign to begin in July. We As I have mentioned before, we are all followers of decided to call the campaign Beyond Sunday. Charlotte Ewbank (Trinity) had created a template When I heard of the tragedy in Saskatchewan, like of the pledge card we will give to all members of all of us I was shocked and saddened by the loss our parish. We hope that each member will and the pain for families and the community. Then prayerfully consider their pledge for their church. I heard of the Go Fund Me raising over 15 million. Bob Kurt (St. Peter’s, Wiarton) provided a chart Although I believe there is a need to offer financial that will guide you as you consider increasing your support to persons affected and ensure they have giving. The committee members were surprised at their needs met, I wondered why it is easy to raise how raising our giving by 5% or 10% is not a so much for a tragedy and yet we don’t seem to be significant dollar amount (see chart on page 7). HEARING And UNDERSTANDING THE MESSAGE My niece and her five year-old daughter were spending a holiday with me. My niece’s husband arrived late Saturday evening so, on Sunday they decided to spend a quiet morning at home. Their daughter chose to go to church with me and – her teddy bear! She must have listened closely to the gospel reading because, when we got home, she told her parents what she had heard:” It was about Zacchaeus; after he met Jesus, he said he would share.” Ruth Tompkins Christ Church 7
Hardwick says, the idea of biking across the country Qu’Appelle Bishop Aims To Raise 2 Million to raise money came to him in a dream. In this Cycling Across Canada dream, to raise $1 million for mission and ministry across the diocese, the 7,800 km of his journey December 11, 2017 were “tithed,” with each of the diocese’s identifiable givers donating $780 over five years. If this dream were a reality, according to Hardwick’s calculations, this would mean that the diocese’s existing 1,553 donors would be contributing, together, just over $1.2 million: a figure that works out to 43 cents per day, per donor. If they did, he says, that money would fund all of the diocese’s children and youth ministry work, the Qu’Appelle School for Mission and Ministry, and enable the building of a medical centre in Muyinga, Burundi, where Qu’Appelle has a companion relationship with the diocese of Muyinga. The average wage in Burundi? Forty-three cents per day. After that, Hardwick says he will be riding “self-supported,” carrying everything he needs on his bike. Hardwick says the discipline of training for the ride has been an important part of his life and spiritual journey. “I did get to the point in my life where I was reaching for potato chips rather than praying,” he said. Since he began cycling three years ago, he has lost 92 pounds and says he has “never been as healthy as I am now.” Hardwick is planning to use a GoPro camera to create video updates for his diocese each day, and will be posting updates through social media along the way. Donations can be made through the diocese of Qu’Appelle website beginning in the new year. His itinerary will put him near the country’s major city centres on Saturdays, and Hardwick is hoping that bishops, clergy and laity from the dioceses he passes through will join him for parts of the trip. 'Please, mister, please, I'm sorry but I didn't know what else to do,' he pleaded. 'I threw the brick because no one else would stop...' Sunday Morning Humour An exasperated mother, whose son was always getting into mischief, finally asked him "How do you expect to get into Heaven?" The boy thought it over and said, "Well, I'll run in and out and in and out and keep slamming the door until St Peter says, 'For Heaven's sake, Troy, come in or stay out!'"
