         God’s Word Today:
Of all three years of the lectionary
cycle, this year’s All Saints readings
have the most tears. Isaiah and
Revelation look forward to the day when
God will wipe away all tears; in John’s
gospel, Jesus weeps along with Mary
and all the gathered mourners before he
demonstrates his power over death. On
All Saints Day we celebrate the victory
won for all the faithful dead, but we
grieve for our beloved dead as well,
knowing that God honors our tears. We
bring our grief to the table and find
there a foretaste of Isaiah’s feast to
come.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS:
P: Blessed be the holy Trinity,☩ one God,
the God of manna, the God of miracles, the God of mercy.
C Amen.
P: Trusting in the mercy of God, let us confess our sin.
(Pause for brief moment of reflection)
P: God, our provider,
   help us.
It is hard to believe there is enough to share.
We question your ways when they differ from the ways
of the world in which we live.
We turn to our own understanding
   rather than trusting in you.
We take offense at your teachings and your ways.
   Turn us again to you.
   Where else can we turn?
Share with us the words of eternal life
and feed us for life in the world. Amen.
P: Beloved people of God:
in Jesus, the manna from heaven,
   you are fed and nourished.
By Jesus, the worker of miracles,
there is always more than enough.
Through Jesus, ☩ the bread of life,
   you are shown God’s mercy:
you are forgiven and loved into abundant life.
C: Amen.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
P The Lord be with you.
C And also with you.

OPENING HYMN
All Saints Lutheran Church ELCA November 7, 2021 All Saints Sunday
WORD
FIRST READING: Isaiah 25:6-9
Isaiah sees a vision of the end of days, when God will gather all people on God’s holy mountain and will prepare for them a rich
feast. At this banquet God will wipe the tears from all eyes. And there will be no more sorrow, for God will destroy death itself.
    6
On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples
a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines,
of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear.
 7
And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples,
     the sheet that is spread over all nations;
     8
he will swallow up death forever.
Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces,
and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken.
 9
It will be said on that day,
Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us.
     This is the Lord for whom we have waited;
let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.
L The word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.
Psalm 24 (Read responsively by whole verse)
  1
The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it,
the world and those who dwell therein.
  2
For the Lord has founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers.
  3
Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord,
and who may stand in God’s holy place?
  4
Those of innocent hands and purity of heart,
who do not swear on God’s being, nor do they pledge by what is false.
  5
They shall receive blessing from the Lord
and righteousness from the God of their salvation.
  6
Such is the generation of those who seek you, O Lord,
of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob.
  7
Lift up your heads, O gates; and be lifted up, O everlasting doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
  8
Who is this King of glory?
The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle!
  9
Lift up your heads, O gates; and be lifted up, O everlasting doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
  10
Who is this King of glory?
Truly, the Lord of hosts is the King of glory.
SECOND READING: Revelation 21:1-6a
Here is a vision of the new heaven and new earth in which God resides fully with God’s people so that mourning, despair, and
pain have been eradicated. These renewing words from the God who spans all of time are trustworthy and true.
1
I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was
no more. 2And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a
bride adorned for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,
“See, the home of God is among mortals.
   He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them;
   4
he will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
for the first things have passed away.” (continue next page)
                                                               4
All Saints Lutheran Church ELCA November 7, 2021 All Saints Sunday
And the one who was seated on the throne said, “See, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write
     5

this, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6aThen he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the
Omega, the beginning and the end.”
L The word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (Please stand, as able.)

The HOLY GOSPEL
P The Holy Gospel according to St. John the 11th chapter.
C Glory to you, O Lord.
Through the raising of Lazarus, Jesus offers the world a vision of the life to come, when death and weeping will be no more.
32
When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had
been here, my brother would not have died.” 33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with
her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. 34He said, “Where have you laid
him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35Jesus began to weep. 36So the Jews said, “See how he loved
him!” 37But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from
dying?”
     38
Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against
     39
it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, already there
is a stench because he has been dead four days.” 40Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed,
you would see the glory of God?” 41So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, “Father,
I thank you for having heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the
crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.” 43When he had said this, he cried with a
loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth,
and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

APOSTLE’S CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
    creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
    born of the virgin Mary,
    suffered under Pontius Pilate,
    was crucified, died, and was buried;
    he descended into hell.
    On the third day he rose again;
    he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
    the holy catholic church,
    the communion of saints,
    the forgiveness of sins,
    the resurrection of the body,
    and the life everlasting. Amen.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
P: On the night in which he was betrayed,
     our Lord Jesus took bread and gave thanks;
broke it and gave it to his disciples saying:
take and eat, this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
this cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of Sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

Promising God may the bread of your eternal banquet bring hope to the hungry.
May the wine of your kingdom give strength to those who thirst.

  Give us this day our daily bread;
     and forgive us our trespasses,
     as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
     but deliver us from evil.

Serve Team
Support for our November Warm Nights Hosting Week
So that we can continue to be actively engaged in supporting Warm Nights during this pandemic and CCSI's ho-
tel-setting operation, the Serve Team invites you to contribute bag lunches which you will drop off at church for de-
livery to CCSI on November 10 and 12, the Wednesday and Friday of our fall hosting week. Our drop-off and deliv-
ery system will work as it did last November. (It's not complicated, so don't be deterred by our compulsive detailing
of instructions (smile)!)
Using the SignUp Genius link below, each volunteering individual/family will sign up to deliver to ASLC one
dozen bag lunches (content guidelines follow here and on the SignUp Genius page) either the evening before or the
morning of the November 10 and November 12 CCSI pickups:
       https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B084CACAE2FA4F49-warm
When you sign up, include an email address AND indicate in the comment section your choice of drop-off time so we
can plan accordingly. Our goal is to provide CCSI with nine dozen lunches each of the two days. Your drop-off op-
tions for the Wednesday CCSI pick-up are 5:30-6:30 pm on Tuesday evening, November 9, or 8:00-9:00 am Novem-
ber 10. For the Friday CCSI pick-up, your drop-off options are 5:30-6:30 pm on Thursday, the 11th, or 8:00 -9:00 am
on Friday, the 12th. Your drop-off location will be immediately inside ASLC's front door. Please wear a mask and
maintain social-distancing when dropping off your lunches. A Serve Team volunteer will transfer all lunches from
the entryway to our kitchen refrigerator for storage until the CCSI van arrives late morning of each day for delivery to
the Warm Nights site hotel. Persons who have questions or are unable to drop off their lunches at the designated
times should contact Liz Muller in advance to make special arrangements.
The brown-bag lunch instructions are the following:
• wear food-handling gloves during preparation
• include the following in each brown-bag lunch
     - one sandwich: lunch meat (no mayo) OR peanut butter/jelly
     - a tangerine/halo OR a fruit cup (include a spoon for the fruit cup)
     - one bag chips
     - napkin
• Do not staple the bags containing meat sandwiches shut as we will add condiments. Please do staple the PBJ
bags. Finally, label each bag on the outside with the type of sandwich.
• The SignUp also includes the option of donating cases of water. We want to provide CCSI with four 24-bottle
    cases of water each day.
We will also be sending a monetary donation to CCSI for $1500, the full amount of our budgeted 2020
Warm Nights benevolence. The Serve Team extends our gratitude to all of you for your faithful, sustained support of
Warm Nights.

Extravagant Generosity—The Heart of Giving was the theme for Consecration Sunday this year. The total

cards for a total of $170,360. This is a decrease of $94,264 from 2021. However, there is good news! More than half
of our members increased their pledges, and we received two new pledges this year. The top eight families/giving
units pledged more than $10,000 each for a total of $110,000. May the Lord be praised for the powerful guiding of
The Holy Spirit!

Thank you to everyone who filled out an estimate of giving card for 2022. If
you have not had a chance to fill out your estimate of giving card, it is not too
late. You can either will it out digitally by using the following link https://
forms.gle/T3y7K8NfsKwgxuBQA or you can fill out a paper estimate of
giving card on Sunday. If you need one mailed to you, please email Jean at
church@allsaintsbowie.org . Thank you!

Gifts of Hope Ministry for 2021
1 John 4:21 And he has given us this command:
Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister
The season of Advent is coming soon, and the Gifts of Hope team will continue to support All Saints
participation in this alternative gift-giving program and ministry sponsored by the Metropolitan Washington DC
Synod of the ELCA for 29 years. We will place a Gifts of Hope table, unattended, in the Narthex during
Sundays in Advent, November 28 through December 21, with paper catalogs displaying the many gifts you can
choose from to bring HOPE to others locally and internationally. Give for the young and the elderly, for college
students, seminarians, and those rebuilding their lives or seeking work, and for those who need food, housing, or
health care. Thank you for your extravagant generosity!
There are two ways to purchase your gifts of hope during this second Covid Advent Season:
(1) Mail in. Read the GOH catalog (pick up a paper catalog or view on the website), select your beneficiary
organization and amount, and complete the paper form now available at the back of the gift catalog (or you can
print a form off the Gifts of Hope website). The form includes a space for you to designate your ELCA church
name. Mail your completed form, with your check made out to Gifts of Hope and addressed directly to: Gifts of
Hope, c/o Natalie Cain, 7901 Bethelen Woods Lane, Springfield, VA 22153. We will not be collecting any
forms or checks at the church. The directions and address are on the form also.
(2) Online. Go to the Gifts of Hope website http://www.giftsofhopedc.org/ and scroll down to the Give a Gift
button and proceed. All major credit cards and multiple online payment options are accepted. Digital Gift of
Hope Christmas cards and beneficiary organization insert cards are available on the website.

The next gathering of the ASLC Women’s Book Group will occur via Zoom on Saturday morning, November
13, when we will discuss The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. The gathering will begin at 9:00 a.m. Maria
Parisi will lead the discussion and Emily Summerlot will be our host. The New York Times review of The

new roads taken, of new lives lived, of a whole different world available to us somehow, somewhere, might be
exactly what’s wanted in these troubled and troubling times.”
All are welcome, whether you have read the book or would like to learn more about it. We love to welcome
family and friends to the discussions! Please contact Louise Waynant if you have questions or would like
