ORDER OF WORSHIP The Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 26, 2021 | 10:00 am In consideration PRELUDE of other worshippers, please program all mobile phones and WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Rev. David Rapp electronic devices to silent or vibrate mode for the duration of the service. MEDITATION AND PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP “It seems beyond question that we believers do not think often enough, or hard enough, about the culture of our congregations. Culture, a word borrowed from sociology, means the public lifestyle that expresses a shared mindset and convictions held in common. A church’s culture should be orthopraxy expressing orthodoxy. It should look like self- giving love for others that in turn reflects the sacrificial love for us of Jesus Christ our Savior and our Lord.” —J.I. Packer in Foreword to Ray Ortlund, The Gospel: How the Church Portrays the Beauty of Christ (pp. 13-14) SCRIPTURE FOR MEMORIZATION John 14:26-27 (ESV) But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, 26 he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. ADVENT CA LEN DA R C HR IST M AS The word ‘Pentecost’ comes from the Greek meaning simply ‘fiftieth’. Pentecost Sunday ends the season of Easter and symbolizes a new beginning. It celebrates the unleashing of the Holy Spirit on EPIPHANY the world and the empowering of the church to reach the world with the gospel. In remembering L ENT Pentecost and living in light of this powerful turning point the church expresses gratitude to Christ for sending “another counselor” (John 14:16), celebrates the work of the Spirit in the renewal of all E AST ER creation, and professes its confidence and security in knowing the Spirit’s power is available for its P EN T ECOST mission. 3

God’s Supremacy SONG OF ADORATION Thy Mercy, My God 1. Thy mercy, my God, is the theme of my song, The joy of my heart, and the boast of my tongue; Thy free grace alone, from the first to the last, Hath won my affections, and bound my soul fast. 2. Without Thy sweet mercy I could not live here; Sin would reduce me to utter despair; But, through Thy free goodness, my spirits revive, And He that first made me still keeps me alive. 3. Thy mercy is more than a match for my heart, Which wonders to feel its own hardness depart; Dissolved by Thy goodness, I fall to the ground, And weep to the praise of the mercy I’ve found. 4. Great Father of mercies, Thy goodness I own, And the covenant love of Thy crucified Son; All praise to the Spirit, Whose whisper divine Seals mercy, and pardon, and righteousness mine. God’s Grace The Word of JAMES 2:14-26 God is the chief 14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not and final means through which have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly God speaks to us; the principal clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in and most direct peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for way we hear from God in the body, what good is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have worship. works, is dead. 18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! 20 Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; 23 and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God. 24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.
