A Spiritual Advisor’s Message: Is God asleep at the wheel? By Deacon Rod Palmer “Jesus, I love you; Jesus, I trust you; Jesus, I thank you.” For the last few years this has seemingly been the road map for my relationship with Jesus. In every situation of what I am feeling about love, health, politics, religion, racism, and nature, I find my- self turning to Jesus and looking for some guidance, comfort, understanding, and hope. There are of course many more areas of life that I need to bring to Jesus, but these areas have taken cen- ter stage for some time now. I suspect many of us are affected by our country’s and the world’s current troubling times. As I reflect on the center stage areas of my life that popped into my head for this article, I note that I thought of love first. Always, always, always, when I think of Jesus I think of love. I do admit to wondering, with all that challenges us physically, mentally, and spiritually, is my love for Jesus and his love for me enough to get me through yet another sad news story? Pandemic, racism, looting, congressional bipartisanship dead, Mass on hold, economy in the tank. Yikes! In trying to make some sense of all this building up and converging at this time, I wondered, dare I say it? is God asleep at the wheel? As I raise the question to myself, I am filled with profound sadness that my love, trust and thanks to Jesus, has a kink in it. How did I get to the point where my litany to Jesus has me second guessing God? Maybe it is not so much second-guessing God, it is more I want him to do something. He could take care of this whole mess with just a thought. He has to know that we are our own worst enemy. I mentioned my “is God asleep at the wheel” thought to a friend who told me to read in scripture, Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. As I reflected on the reading, I right away took notice of the word love. Love the most important part of my relationship with Jesus. The love that helps me trust that he knows what he is doing. The love that helps me be grateful for his blessings. I realized that rather than try to determine what purpose God had for me in all this, I was sitting back and feeling sorry myself and all of us who want so desperately a cure for all that is troubling in our world. I thought about all the crud that was going on and I was frozen. I realized that I had been waiting for God to do something to help us. There is just so much. I was asleep at the wheel, not God. I, we, have been, out of God’s love, given a purpose. Sometimes we know exactly what God wants us to do, other times it’s not so clear. In either instance we will have a hard time hearing God if we don’t stay close to him. I felt close to God, but perhaps unknowingly, I was focusing my prayer on that which I thought God would be willing to personally help me with. It was selfish, but the other problems were so big. I had presumed to know the mind of God – ouch! God wants us to bring our wants, needs, and hopes to him, big or small. Be persistent in prayer, ask God to show you what your purpose is. You may already know, or you are still waiting for clarity. If you ask God, he won’t let you down. John 16:33 In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

Come enjoy an inspiring weekend with Daily Mass, confession, prayer, spiritual direc- tion, and a series of meditations integrating life, work, and our beautiful Catholic faith! SAINT SHARBEL MAKHLŪF (1828-1898) July 24 The convenience store owner chatted animatedly in Arabic with coworkers, but hardly at all with his American clien- tele. So soon after 9/11, he probably figured, with my accent, the less said, the better. That changed when an Ameri- can customer recognized Saint Sharbel’s portrait on the wall: “So you’re Lebanese Maronites!” The owner was happily incredulous: “You know our saint?” “Not at first,” the customer admitted. “But we help the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, and their magazine published that picture and called Sharbel the ‘Paradoxical Artisan of Peace.’ ” “Everyone thinks we’re Muslims,” said the owner, “and some of my workers are. Saint Sharbel helps us live together in peace!” A hermit for twenty-three years, little is known of Sharbel’s life. He died after suffering a stroke while celebrating the liturgy. Miracles attributed to his intercession number in the thousands, and in war-torn Lebanon, Catholics, Orthodox, and Muslims pray together where his incorrupt body is entombed. How lovely if after our passing, we too could be remembered for having brought very different people to the one God, together in peace. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
