EPIPHANY SEASON

Epiphany means ‘manifestation’. The season of joyful celebration that begins at
Christmas continues through the successive Sundays of Epiphany, ending with the Feast
of the Presentation (Candlemas). The child who has been manifested to the magi at his
birth is now recognized by Simeon and Anna, when he comes to be presented in the
Temple according to the Law of Israel. He is both ‘a light to lighten the Gentiles’ and ‘the
glory of God’s people Israel’. But the redemption he will bring must be won through
suffering; the Incarnation is directed to the Passion; and Simeon’s final words move our
attention away from the celebration of Christmas and towards the mysteries of Easter.

PRAYER OF THE DAY—The Presentation of Christ in the Temple

Almighty and everliving God, we humbly pray
that, as your only Son was presented in the temple in accordance with the law,
so we may be dedicated to you with pure and clean hearts;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

FIRST READING Malachi 3:1-4

A reading from the book of Malachi
1
See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom
you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom
you delight—indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. 2 But who can endure the day
of his coming, and who can stand when he appears?
For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; 3 he will sit as a refiner and purifier of
silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver,
until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. 4 Then the offering of Judah
and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years.

Hear the word of the Lord.
    Thanks be to God.

PSALM 84

Response: Blessed are they who dwell in your house.
1
  How lovely is your dwelling-place:
O Lord God of hosts!
2
My soul has a desire and longing
to enter the courts of the Lord:
my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.
3
The sparrow has found her a home,
and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young:
even your altar, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.
4
Blessed are those who dwell in your house:
they will always be praising you……………………………………………….Response
5
Blessed are those whose strength is in you:
in whose heart are the highways to Zion;
6
Who, going through the valley of dryness,
find there a spring from which to drink:
till the autumn rain shall clothe it with blessings.
7
They go from strength to strength:
they appear, every one of them,
before the God of gods in Zion………………………………………………..Response
8
O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer:
give ear, O God of Jacob.
9
Behold, O God, him who reigns over us:
and look upon the face of your anointed.
10
One day in your courts is better than a thousand:……………..Response
I would rather stand at the threshold
of the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of ungodliness.
11
For the Lord God is a light and a shield,
the Lord gives favour and honour:
and no good thing will he withhold
from those who walk in innocence.
12
   O Lord God of hosts:
blessed are those who put their trust in you………………………...Response

SECOND READING Hebrews 2:14-18

A reading from Paul’s letter to the Hebrews
14
Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the
same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of
                                                                                         3
death, that is, the devil, 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the
fear of death. 16 For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants
of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every
respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to
make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself was
tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.

Hear the Word of the Lord.
    Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL Luke 2:22-40

The Lord be with you.
    And also with you.

Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.
22
When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they
brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of
the Lord, ‘Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord’), 24 and they
offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, ‘a pair of turtle-
doves or two young pigeons.’
25
Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous
and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on
him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death
before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the
temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was
customary under the law, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying,
29
‘Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace,
      according to your word;
30
for my eyes have seen your salvation,
31
which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
32
a light for revelation to the Gentiles
and for glory to your people Israel.’
33
And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him.
34
Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the
falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed 35 so that
the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul
too.’
36
There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She
was of a great age, having lived with her husband for seven years after her marriage,

4
37
then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshipped
there with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 At that moment she came, and began to
praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of
Jerusalem.
39
When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to
Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40 The child grew and became strong, filled
with wisdom; and the favour of God was upon him.

For the Gospel of the Lord,
Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

SENTENCE OF THE DAY

My eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all
peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.
                                                                              Luke 2:30–32

A blessing as we travel into a new year
May your eyes be opened to the wonder of the daily miracles around you
and your sense of mystery be deepened.
May you be aware of the light that shines in the darkness,
and that the darkness can never put out.
May you be blessed with companions on the journey,
friends who will listen to you and encourage you with their presence.
May you learn to live with what is unsolved in your heart,
Daring to face the questions and holding them
Until, one day, they find their answers.
May you find the still, quiet place inside yourself
Where you can know and experience the peace that passes understanding.
May love flow in you and through you to those who need your care.
May you continue to dream dreams and to reach out for the future
With a deeper understanding of God’s way for you. Amen

Parish Council Notes
At the recent Parish Council meeting the following were discussed. If you want more
information, please ask a Parish Councillor.
• Welcome to Rev’d Ingrid Busk, who will takes over as Locum from 5th February.
• Sale of car. It was noted that one parish car, which was no longer used as it was
uneconomical to repair, had been deregistered and sold.
• Tree work at Mooloolah. Two trees at St Thomas’ lost limbs in the recent storms
and are in a dangerous state. It was agreed to remove them.
• Finance. Collections for December. $19,337 (budget $16,131). For the year the
total collections were $168,254, $153 over budget. Overall deficit for the year
     $13,357 for normal operating costs.
• The draft budget for 2020 was approved. It will be presented at the Annual
     Meeting for formal approval.
• Building works. Quotes are being obtained for relocating the shade cloth at St
Andrew’s; repairs to those roofs at St Andrew's that were not replaced in the
major works a few years ago; resurfacing of the driveway at St Andrews to
eliminate a tripping hazard; and adding a carport and deck to the St Andrew’s
     Church House.
• St Andrew’s Outreach. It was agreed to trial a ‘breakfast for the homeless’ on
Mondays at 7.30am from 24th February.
• Radio microphones. The ongoing issues with the microphones at St Andrew’s is
believed to be related to radio interference. It was agreed to obtain on loan new
equipment operating on a different frequency which hopefully will eliminate the
     problem.
• Parish profile. Work is progressing on updating this document which gives a
snapshot of the parish for potential new Rectors.

                                         …Rest in Peace...
                                  Brian Ashley-Cooper
                                     Brian passed away peacefully
                                     on Wednesday 29th January.
His Memorial Service will be held at St Andrew’s
                                  12noon, Friday 7th February 2020.

                                          Wendy and family.

                  Thought for the day
The message of Candlemas, an alternative name for today’s
feast, is that Jesus comes as the light to all the world, a light
that can never be put out, and which continues to shine, come
gale, flood or fire. Traditionally, candles were blessed in church
on this day, for use throughout the year, to light during
thunderstorms, or to place by the side of someone who was ill
or dying.
We are reminded that the light of Jesus is for all people, not just for some; and it is our
Christian calling to ensure that those who are forgotten, or who don’t see themselves
as belonging, are drawn into the circle of light. Light kindles light. It increases as it is
shared.
When the medieval clergy blessed candles, and told people to carry them home
through the streets and to light them at times of fear and journey, they understood
faith, and the importance of its light in our precarious and fragile lives.
May the light of Christ continue burning in the people of Caloundra-Glasshouse
Country, and may this light be shared with all whom we meet. Rev’d Timothy
                                                                                          7

                 NOTICE OF ANNUAL MEETING:
The Annual Meeting of the Parish will be held on Sunday 23 February at St Andrew’s
at 11am. This is an important meeting which looks both back at 2019, by receiving
reports and the accounts, and forward to 2020, by electing a new Parish Council and
 approving the budget.
Please consider prayerfully if you would like to stand for the Parish Council, or if you
discern that there is someone whose skills would be valuable on the council. It is
always good to have new faces.
You probably are aware of the important posts of Churchwarden (for the whole
parish) and District Warden (for Glasshouse Country) which need to be filled, but
there are two other special roles on the council that need to be filled this year which
 might need some explanation:
Nominators As the parish will be seeking a new Rector this year, after Rev’d Julie’s
resignation formally takes effect in March, the three people elected as Nominators
will meet with diocesan representatives to form the Presentation Board who discuss
nominations for a new Rector and make a recommendation to the Archbishop.
Synod Reps Two people are elected once every three years. They attend the annual
meeting, held over a weekend in June at which representatives of all parishes and
schools, plus the clergy, meet to discuss issues affecting the whole diocese. This might
sound dry, but in fact it is very inspiring to hear and be part of the bigger picture of
what is happening in the Anglican Church in Southern Queensland.

                                                                                       9
