SAINT VIATOR HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITY GUIDE 2018 – 2019 Mission of Saint Viator's Co-Curricular Program: Saint Viator High School believes that by offering a variety of programs to students that encourage them to achieve the highest standards, we are able to maintain an outstanding reputation in all areas of education, activities and athletics. The student activities program exists to support, complement and enrich the personal, social and academic lives of our students. The activities program supplements a student's academic growth by providing lifelong learning experiences and a greater opportunity to develop their interests, talents and abilities beyond the classroom structure. Goals: • Extend and enhance student academic learning • Provide opportunities for students' pursuit of established interests and development of new interests • Enhance the opportunity to develop responsibility, leadership, fellowship, cooperation and self-direction • Promote school spirit and pride • Recognize students for many different types of achievement • Provide for widespread participation by the entire student body • Foster more effective teamwork and communication between students and staff Meetings: Meetings are scheduled before or after school, and during activity periods. Meetings are announced through daily announcements, and they are posted on the digital message sign and in various locations throughout the school. Membership: Any student may join many of these various activities by simply attending meetings and participating in the activities of the club. Some organizations require tryouts, are by invitation only, or are elected positions. Eligibility: 1
IHSA eligibility: As a member of the Illinois High School Association, Saint Viator High School requires that each student must be passing 25 credit hours of school work per week (2.5 credits) to be eligible for co-curricular activities. Teachers will evaluate a student's performance each Wednesday while his/her sport or activity is in session. If the student is declared ineligible, his/her period of eligibility will be a minimum of one week, beginning on a Monday and concluding the following Sunday. In order to practice or participate in a co-curricular activity or sport, students must be in attendance no later than 10:00 a.m. or have an early dismissal no earlier than 1:00 p.m. on the day of the activity. Lion Code of Behavior LIONS are young men and women of Saint Viator who pride themselves as students and members of our community. They not only represent themselves and their families but also their fellow classmates, the school, and their moderators and coaches. They will strive to be leaders and conduct themselves in such a manner as to be praised as exemplary young men and women. Student Pledge “As a member of the Saint Viator High School community, I promise to conduct myself in a manner that reflects positive Christian values. I will respect others at all times – my fellow students, my parents(s)/guardian and teachers, coaches, and moderators. I will demand a 100% effort of myself in the classroom and co-curricular activities. STUDENT CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS ACADEMIC-RELATED CLUBS Chinese Club The Chinese Club is open to all students who are interested in the Chinese culture and language. Activities will include celebrations of the Chinese holidays and Modern World Language Week, an International Fair, eating Chinese food, listening to Chinese music, watching Chinese movies, learning calligraphy, and hosting trips to China every two years. The Chinese Club usually meets during an activity period once a month. You don’t have to take Chinese to be a member. Come to a meeting or contact Mrs. Zhang in room 208 (azhang@saintviator.com) for more information. French Club Students who would like to increase their knowledge and awareness of French in the world and its customs and culture are invited to join the French Club. Activities include celebrating Modern World Language Week, an International Fair, making and eating French food, learning songs, watching movies, going to dinner at a local French restaurant, and hosting trips to France/Canada every two years. The French Club usually meets during an activity period once a month. You do not have to take French to be a member. Italian Club Students who would like to increase their knowledge and awareness of Italy and Italian customs and culture are invited to join the Italian Club. Activities include celebrating Modern World Language Week, an International Fair, field trips, the Lyric Opera, and hosting trips to Italy every two years. The Italian Club usually meets once a month before school or during an activity period. For past and future activities, go to the Italian Club web page under Activities and Clubs – Academics. Math Team Many Math Club members are also actively involved in the Math Team and math competitions: • Illinois Math League, 6 times a year (held before school) • ICTM Regional in February • ICTM State Meet in May • MTA Loyola University Math Contest in February • Catholic Math League • AMC National competition in February 4

Scholastic Bowl Team This team is an IHSA sponsored and regulated activity. Saint Viator belongs to the Metro North League and competes against other teams using the IHSA format in topic areas of science, history, geography, fine arts, literature, politics, and math. There are both varsity and junior varsity teams, which meet on Wednesday mornings as well as on Thursday afternoons the weeks of scheduled competitions. Our season is September through April. We also help moderate both the 8th and 6th & 7th grade Saint Viator Scholastic Bowl tournaments and conducts the annual Pi Day fundraiser. Students are invited to join Scholastic Bowl and attend tryouts in the fall. Science Club Science Club provides a number of enrichment opportunities to cover a range of science interests and is not a group solely for those planning a career in science. Many of our activities are integrated with the STEM curriculum and allow for friendly competition among members. Some possible activities are: egg drop competition, trebuchet design, mouse trap powered cars, and model bridge engineering. Members can suggest projects for consideration. Spanish Club – Una Gente Students interested in learning and experiencing more about the Spanish language and Spanish- speaking cultures are invited to join Una Gente. Club members will participate in events that promote Spanish and Latin American cultures, including concerts, sporting events, dinners, Modern World Language Week, an International Fair, and hosting trips to Spain every two years. Speech Team The Speech Team is a group of students with an interest in developing and crafting their public speaking skills. Through meetings and practices, students cultivate specific skills such as planning their dialogue, engaging audiences, listening to peers, and building confidence to speak in front of a crowd. During the winter, the Speech Team competes in the IHSA Individual Events. In the fall and spring, the Speech Team participates in off-season preparation and intramural activities. FINE ARTS Band: Contact Mr. Genualdi in the Band Room (vgenualdi@saintviator.com) for more information. Concert Band: The Concert Band is second of the two wind ensembles at Saint Viator High School. It is open to all grade levels and meets daily during the school day. This ensemble performs at all school concerts and various festivals. Registration is open to all who have had prior music experience. Please contact your counselor to enroll. Drumline: The Drumline performs and plays an integral part at sporting events, school events, and public outreach. Acceptance into the Saint Viator Drumline is by audition and open to all students. Jazz Band: The Saint Viator Jazz Band is an auditioned ensemble open to all grade levels. This curricular ensemble meets outside of the regular school day. The Saint Viator Jazz Band performs at school concerts, community events, and jazz festivals. Members must be at a high level of proficiency on their instrument. Students interested in joining should contact Mr. Genualdi (vgenualdi@saintviator.com). Auditions are held in the spring of the preceding year and then students then register for this class. Musical Pit Orchestra: The Pit Orchestra provides accompaniment for the school musical. Auditions are in the fall. Rehearsals are November through February. Pep Band: The Pep Band performs at home football and basketball games. The pep band serves as an integral part of the Saint Viator Game Day experience. This ensemble provides a needed energy for our fan base by creating a fun and spirited atmosphere. Students interested in joining should contact Mr. Genualdi (vgenualdi@saintviator.com). GO LIONS! Percussion Ensemble: This ensemble is formed from each curricular band’s percussion sections. Students interested in enrolling for this course, should contact Mr. Genualdi (vgenualdi@saintviator.com). Symphonic Band: The Symphonic Band is the premiere wind ensemble at Saint Viator High School. This auditioned ensemble participates at school concerts, community events, and music festivals. Auditions for this ensemble occur at each semester and then students register for this class. Students interested in joining should contact Mr. Genualdi (vgenualdi@saintviator.com). Chorus: Contact Ms. Sievers-Kragt in the Choir Room (jsievers-kragt@saintviator.com) for more information. Music Ministry: One-half Credit (0.25 credit per semester) Music Ministry is open to all students – vocalists and instrumentalists, including strings – who wish to participate in the planning and performing of music at Mass. Students learn the fundamentals of how music enhances the texts and rituals of the liturgy from a variety of traditions, including chant, traditional hymns and contemporary. Participation at Mass 6
is required for a passing grade. Music Ministry meets from 6:30-8 p.m. on Wednesdays (occasionally, meeting times/days must be changed/cancelled due to conflicts). Students enrolled in this course are eligible to audition for Chamber Singers. Concert Choir: One Credit Concert Choir addresses the fundamentals of vocal technique, sight-singing, and performance skills through the study and performance of music from various genres and traditions. The Concert Choir performs in concerts at school, local festivals, and community events. Participation in performances is required for a passing grade. Students enrolled in this course are eligible to audition for Chamber Singers. This class meets during the regular school day. Chamber Singers The Chamber Singers is a co-curricular group, with its purpose to extend the learning possibilities offered in the Saint Viator curriculum. Students are selected by audition from students who are currently taking a curricular choral course offered through the Fine Arts department. This auditioned group of singers rehearses outside of the school day and provides enthusiastic students with additional choral experience performing music of various styles. Performance opportunities include concerts and events throughout the school year. Treble Choir Treble Choir is open to all freshmen and sophomore women. Students will learn fundamentals of vocal technique, sight-singing, and performance skills through the study and performance of music from various genres and traditions. The treble Choir performs in concerts at school, local festivals, and community events. Participation in performances is required for a passing grade. Students enrolled in this course are eligible to audition for Chamber Singers. This class meets during the regular school day. Orchesis Dance Company Orchesis is Saint Viator’s performing dance company. Members explore many areas of dance, focusing on performance, choreography and technique. The company has several opportunities to perform throughout the year, often showcasing student-choreographed pieces. Members occasionally have the opportunity to attend clinics and performances. Rehearsals are usually two or three times a week after school or early evening, excluding the musical season. Theater Productions & Tech Crew Throughout the school year, there are several student productions including the Fall Play, Musical, and Winter and Spring Fine Arts Festivals. Opportunities will be announced and posted on the bulletin board outside the auditorium – come join us! Contact Mrs. Costello in the Theater (kcostello@saintviator.com) for more information. Fall Play: The fall play holds open auditions in August. A full-length comedy or drama is performed over one weekend in late October. The show is double-cast and rehearses afternoons, Sunday through Thursday. Winter Musical: The annual musical has been produced since 1968. Auditions are held in early November and are open to any aspiring actors, singers and dancers, regardless of 7
their stage experience. Two complete casts perform over two weekends in early February. Tech Crew: Students have the opportunity to get involved in set construction, stage crew, and lighting and sound crew. Tech Crew works a variety of events throughout the school year. No previous experience required. JOURNALISM GROUPS “Viator Voice” / Student Newspaper The Viator Voice is an award-winning student newspaper that releases five issues per year, plus an annual Senior Issue. Learning and using the principles of journalistic style, students report, write, and edit stories, create art and photography, and design pages in the Local, World, Opinion, Entertainment, and Sports sections. New and Returning Staff Orientation occurs in September, with intermittent training throughout the year. All-staff meetings occur before school at 7:10 a.m. approximately one month before each release date. For increased involvement, staff members may transfer into the newspaper homeroom at the start of the second semester. Editorial staff members are chosen in February and are required to join the homeroom the following year. Contact Mr. Paolelli in room 223 (cpaolelli@saintviator.com) for more information. “Viatome” / Yearbook Students are responsible for producing the school yearbook by choosing a theme, creating layouts, selecting pictures, doing interviews and gathering information to document the year. Members have the opportunity to attend a yearbook workshop in August each year and coordinate club photo day in December. Anyone may join the yearbook staff at the beginning of the school year. No experience required! The yearbook staff also meets after school twice a week. Contact Mr. Weber (aweber@saintviator.com) for more information. LEADERSHIP & HONOR SOCIETIES Mu Alpha Theta / National Math Honor Society Mu Alpha Theta is the National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society. Membership is be invitation only. Students are required to participate in math contests, attend meetings and provide peer tutoring. Contact Mrs. Brankin in room 240 (bbrankin@ saintviator.com) for more information. National Art Honor Society This society provides advanced art experiences for students. They participate in various art service projects and coordinate Winter and Spring Fine Arts Weeks. It is open to any student who has completed an art class at Saint Viator and has an interest in creating art. Contact Mr. Gruenfeld in room 216 (mgruenfeld@saintviator.com) for more information. 8
National Chinese Honor Society Membership in the National Chinese Honor Society is by invitation only. To be eligible for membership a student must be a junior or senior, currently enrolled in Chinese III or higher, and have maintained a cumulative average of 93% in Chinese I and II. To remain an active member, student must continue to study Chinese for four years. Contact Mrs. Zhang in room 208 (azhang@saintviator.com) for more information. National French Honor Society Students are invited to join this society based on a minimum 93% grade point average through four semesters. Membership is open to juniors and seniors meeting membership requirements. To remain eligible, a student must take French all four years or complete A.P. French. National Honor Society The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. Students who meet the qualifications are invited to apply after the first semester of their junior year. The Student Handbook includes specific details about these qualifications. The Saint Viator chapter participates in several leadership and service activities throughout the year, including a peer tutoring program, fundraisers, ushering at SVHS events and open house. National Italian Honor Society Students are invited to join this society based on the following criteria: members must be at least a junior, currently enrolled in Italian III and have maintained a 93% grade point average through Italian I & II. National Spanish Honor Society Juniors and seniors are invited to join this society if they maintain a 95% grade point average over four semesters or 93% grade point average over six semesters of Spanish. Student Council Five councils of elected officers and class representatives make up Student Council. All councils participate in service projects, fund-raisers and events sponsored by Student Council. Members of the councils are scheduled into four grade-level homerooms. They attend meetings once a week before school and as needed. Members also attend a summer workshop in August. 9
The councils organize all Homecoming activities, which include coronation, games day, a pep rally and the dance. They also sponsor pep rallies, service projects, informal dances, Winter Ball, Senior Prom, Variety Show, Dodgeball Tourney, community fun fairs for local children, and several social and spirit activities during the year. The Student Council works with the Administration to increase school spirit and Lion Pride. Interclass Council / ICC ICC is the Executive Board of Student Government and sponsors all class elections. Officers are elected in the spring for the next school year; freshman officers and representatives are elected in September. Senior Class Council Homeroom #215 Mrs. Perez (aperez@saintviator.com) is the Class Moderator. Junior Class Council Homeroom #240 Mrs. Brankin (bbrankin@saintviator.com) is the Class Moderator. Sophomore Class Council Homeroom #219 Mr. Tubridy (mtubridy@saintviator.com) is the Class Moderator. Freshman Class Council Election of representatives is held in September. Homeroom #232 Ms. Dowd (mdowd@saintviator.com) is the Class Moderator. Tri-M Music Honor Society Tri-M is the International Music Honor Society, for which students are selected by meeting specific criteria. A student must participate in a music class or ensemble at least one semester of the current school year. The student must have a grade average of 93% or better in music and an 85% or better overall. Finally, the student must demonstrate character strength in areas of service, leadership and cooperation. Members will complete various service projects throughout the school year. Contact Mr. Genualdi (vgenualdi@saintviator.com) for more information. Champions Club The Champions Club serves as a support and leadership organization for Saint Viator athletes. Student athletes will have the opportunity to plan and lead discussions on numerous issues. Some would be common to all athletes such as balancing school and sports, sportsmanship, and sports and faith; and others more specific situations such as dealing with a sport injury or perusing collegiate sports. SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS Ambassadors Club The Ambassadors Club is a select group of student representatives from all four grade levels for the purpose of prospective-student recruitment. Ambassadors assist in special events in and out of school throughout the entire school year. These events include, but are not limited to, open houses, the 8th grade entrance exam, feeder school visits, shadow hosting and the incoming class barbeque in June. Students are invited to make application to the Ambassadors Club in the fall of each new school year. Campus Ministry Team The Campus Ministry Team (CMT) is a Christ centered, caring, welcoming, Gospel-fueled group of students who lead and organize three major areas of ministry at Saint Viator High School. • CMT Prays: The purpose of CMT Prays is to engage our school community in the liturgical life of the church through Eucharist and a variety of prayer and sacramental experiences. CMT Prays helps to make all-school Masses run smoothly. • CMT Connects: The purpose of CMT Connects is to actively promote all Campus Ministry programs through print and digital media. • CMT Acts: The purpose of CMT Acts is to promote Campus Ministry social events, service outings, Loaves & Fishes campaigns, and to liaise with Justice League. CMT meets bi-monthly on Tuesday throughout the year. Garden Club “Veggie Lions” This club meets mostly during the summer to grow vegetables which are in turn donated to community food shelters. Students secure donations for plants and seeds, plant the garden which is located at the Provence Center, and take care of the garden through harvest. Student Vision Project Founded by Saint Viator students, Student Vision Project is an international health mission providing eye care and glasses to the world’s poor. Eye glasses are collected and then, in partnering with international humanitarian organizations, are distributed to the poor throughout the world. Recycling Corps This student-directed group’s goal is to make Catholic Social Teaching’s tenant of “Care for God’s Creation” come to life at Saint Viator High School in a variety of ways. One way the club helps to reduce the school’s impact on the environment is through the weekly, after school recycling program. The Corps collects the recycle bins from classrooms and offices, and empties them into the outdoor recycling dumpster. Other “green” projects will be explored by the group. SOCIAL INTERACTION AND SUPPORT SERVICES LINK Crew LINK Crew is Saint Viator’s freshman and transfer student transition program. LINK leaders are juniors and seniors who have been invited to join after receiving faculty nominations and recommendations. They serve as mentors to the freshman class and transfer students and provide social and academic support throughout the school year. SADD - Students Against Destructive Decisions / Students Making Smart Choices Students help to organize activities that encourage student to make good decisions. Club activities include: Safe Driving Campaign, Red Ribbon Week, Great American Smokeout, Alcohol Awareness Week, Walter Payton Toy Drive toy boxes and the State Farm Teens in the Driver Seat Program. The Justice League We are a social justice club that encourages student leaders to commit to the Viatorian value of standing with the least accounted for. We incorporate community based learning, advocacy projects, and theological reflection to provide students with the tools to create positive social change. Throughout the past few years we have: participated in Viatorian Border Immersions, sent student delegates to the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Salt Lake City, planned a student-led walkout in support of March for Our Lives, and hosted a school-wide student Trivia Night to raise awareness about access to global education. SPECIAL INTERESTS Anime Club Anime is Japanese animation that has many different genres. It has been popular in Japan since the 1960s and has gained popularity in the U.S. Many anime that come to America are edited to 12
meet our standards and are re-voiced, in a process called dubbing, for the American audience. If you are a big fan of anime or just want to learn more about it, check out the Anime Club! Bass Fishing Club The Bass Fishing Club focuses on developing both knowledge and skills necessary to catch freshwater fish and in particular, largemouth bass. Activities may include selection and maintenance of tackle, studying the nature and habits of fish, fish location, lure selection and safety skills. Members of the club will have the opportunity to qualify for the fishing team and represent Saint Viator in the IHSA Bass Fishing Team Tournament in April. Contact Br. Cahill Crazies Leadership Team The Saint Viator student body, otherwise known as, the Cahill Crazies, are dedicated to enhancing school spirit at Saint Viator High School. ALL students are members of the Cahill Crazies. Leadership positions and roles of support are available to those who express interest. The mission of the Cahill Crazies is to fully embrace the passion and spirit that has made Saint Viator High School one of Chicago’s most respected Catholic high schools! Join us as we cheer the Lions on to victory and continue to pave the path as the most influential high school student body! They will learn how to use equipment and software for post-production. Students will participate in projects such as producing special films for sports teams or student activities as requested. Students will work on other projects as assigned in the club, with the goal of having a student film festival in the spring. Illustrators’ Club Illustrators is a club for artists who are interested in honing their artistic skills. The club meets once a week after school for a variety of art activities. Every other week, we work on a guided activity (some solo, some collaborative) and the other times, students are encouraged to work on their own personal art endeavors. The Investment Club The Investment Club is a student run organization that focuses on the basics of the stock market and why money managing skills are important to everyone, not just those interested in pursuing a career in business. Members are placed into a fantasy league where they compete for a top place finish at the end of the year. Student Co-Founders hope to bring in qualified experts throughout the year to engage with members in order to help them decide if the business world is right for them or to increase their knowledge to be successful in their personal finances. Powerlifting Club Interested in learning more about resistance training, human performance, goal setting and character building? The Powerlifting Club meets after school in the evenings. It is open to all students and athletes who are out-of-season and not participating in their specific sport off-season conditioning program. Students will be encouraged to participate in the Illinois High School Powerlifting Association competitive meets and other organized projects.
