St. Vincent de Paul Parish 2 Sunday Scripture Reflection Most of us don’t like laws, or other people telling us what to do. Many times, we will do only what is necessary. We make a complete stop at a stop sign or drive the speed limit only when there is a police car behind us. We may follow the law externally, but not really believe in its purpose. You can probably think of many examples where people can follow the letter of the law in order to game the system, or to actually subvert the intention of the law. Jesus calls us today to think beyond the mere letter of the law to understand the deeper meaning and intention of God’s law. Jesus leads us to the heart and spirit of the law. He does not change the law that God gave the Jewish people, but he calls his disciples to a deeper understanding of what God meant. What Jesus is calling us to is a life of virtue. He asks us not just to be good, but to be the best person we can be. He calls us to live each moment for God. It is not enough to say, “I didn’t murder anyone today,” and expect congratulations, but we are called to control our anger and resentment. It is not enough to say, “I didn’t commit adultery today” and expect congratulations, but we are called to control our feelings that may lead us there. It is not enough to say, “I didn’t lie today,” and expect congratulations, but we are called to be sincere in all our interactions with others, so that we have no need to swear by anything other than our word. What Jesus points out to us today is the underpinning of the law. What underlies all of our laws in the Scriptures and in the Church is respect and love for others and for God. It is not enough to simply follow the commandments, but we are invited to be open to God’s presence in others and in the world. When Jesus tells us not to get angry, not to think lustful thoughts, not to swear, he is reminding us that it is the little things we do each and every day that lead to other, more serious consequences. Without anger, there is no murder. Without lustful looks, there is no adultery. What we choose to do in seemingly meaningless situations is an indicator of what we will do when our choice is more serious. If we can do the little things well, we will do the big things well also. Virtue is not something that is achieved overnight. It takes practice. Just as a musician doesn’t become a virtuoso after one lesson, we too need time to further develop the virtues and abilities that God gives us. And God always gives us the grace and the strength we need to make the right decisions, to see the basis of our faith, to love and respect others. Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 16, 2020
St. Vincent de Paul Parish 4 Pray : Serve : Share 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal Come, follow me… and heal our world Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received with your bulletin. The Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledged campaign commitment where you can make a gift payable in installments. A pledge is a promise to make a gift over a span of time. Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, follow me… and heal the world.” Once we reach our parish goal of $29,847 in paid pledges, any additional funds come back to our parish to help fund our needs. This year, with our rebate, we plan to use the money to fund our building needs, including restoration of our stained glass windows. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you who did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond, we will conduct our in- pew pledge process at all Masses the weekend of February 22/23. St. Vincent de Paul Parish 5 Pray : Serve : Share You are invited to Alpha for a time of great food, even better conversation and talks that make you think. Tuesdays 7:00 PM February 18th – April 28th in the parish center. For more information contact Rebecca at rcarmic1@depaul.edu CHOICE “If you choose you can keep the commandments,” Sirach tells us. God “has set before you fire and water; to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand” (Sirach 15:15, 16). This is a great mystery: God does not control us so completely that we cannot choose our own path. We have certain boundaries, of course, but no one but we can choose our way within those boundaries. In today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us of our freedom and our responsibility for our lives. He calls us to look beyond the words of the commandments, all the way to their meaning. Look beyond the adultery to the selfishness that poisons our love. Look beyond the murder to the anger that eats away at our compassion. Look beyond the perjured testimony to the lies and deception that drive our behavior. Our vocation is to choose life for ourselves, and to choose a path through our part of the world that helps make life possible and more abundant for others as well. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. St. Vincent de Paul Parish 9 News & Notes ON LIVING A SONG Copyright 2020 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) I wrote a song a few years back about the Jesus story. I’ve shared some of the lyrics with you in the past, but I don’t recall sharing these particular lyrics, which come chronologically in the song right after the verses telling of Christ’s sign at Cana: “From this mighty deed, many more did proceed/ As his twelve closest friends have attested/ He bid the blind see; set prisoners free/ But the people in power protested/ They could not abide (be they Jekyll or Hyde)/ How the man slammed their sacred conventions/ He said though that he, a new law did decree/ The fulfillment of all of their intentions.” The words come to mind now because they were inspired in part by today’s Gospel passage. It opens with Jesus telling his disciples, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place.” Interesting, because we know that the religious elite of the day were all about following the law. And scrupulously. Which is perhaps why Jesus also tells his friends, “… unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” So…why all of the controversy? I mean, the law is the law, right? This is what Jesus hangs his hat on anyway--and then some--and what he certainly expects us to hang our hats on as well. The scribes’ and Pharisees’ problem with all of this is that they are quite content with the old interpretation of the law. They don’t need a religious nobody messing with their status quo. And man, does Jesus mess with their status quo! “You have heard that it was said to your ancestors…” (or some version of this) Christ repeats over and over as he reviews the old law. Then he immediately follows each with the fulfillment clause, this time saying over and over, “But I say to you…” as he defines his expanded, completed law of love. Well, I don’t know about you, but I find this expanded law pretty hard to take. Old Law: You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.” OK. But New Law: “Whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment” and “Whoever says ‘You fool,’ will be liable to fiery Gehenna.” Uh, does he really mean that? Old Law: “You shall not commit adultery.” OK. But New Law: “Everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart,” and “If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna.” Uh…he can’t really mean that, can he? “He said though that he, a new law did decree/ The fulfillment of all of their intentions.” Discipleship is no song, but it’s what we’ve signed up for, and we’re all called to sing it every day the very best we can. St. Vincent de Paul Parish 14 Celebration of the Sacraments at St. Vincent de Paul Reconciliation: Saturday afternoon, 4:15-4:50 p.m. in the Reconciliation Room near the Sheffield entrance of the church, or you can call the Parish Center for an appointment. Baptism: Please contact Mary Carter (mcarte40@depaul.edu) to register for baptism preparation, which is held on the 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Church. You may attend this class either before or after your child is born. Following preparation and after your child is born, please contact Mary to schedule a baptism date. Baptisms are celebrated on the 4th Sunday of the month at 11:30 a.m., or during a regular Sunday mass. Baptism is not celebrated during the Lenten season. Marriage: Please contact Mary Carter (mcarte40@depaul.edu) to discuss the celebration of the sacrament of marriage here at St. Vincent’s, or concerning preparation and prenuptial matters if you are getting married in another parish. For baptized Catholics, marriage is celebrated within a Catholic church in the presence of a priest or deacon. The first item to plan is the selection of a date and time. In order to celebrate the sacrament of marriage at St. Vincent, one needs to be a registered parishioner for four months prior to discussion of a date. DePaul University faculty, staff, students, and alumni may also celebrate their wedding here, provided either the bride, groom, or both are Roman Catholic, registered at a parish and actively engaged in the practice of their faith. Weddings are celebrated on Saturdays only, at 1:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. Weddings are not celebrated during the season of Lent, Holy Week or Saturdays that conflict with other parish events. Mary confirms all reservations for weddings. Confirmation: Catholic adults who would like to receive the sacrament of Confirmation are invited to contact Rebecca at rcarmic1@depaul.edu. RCIA: Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a program that prepares adults to receive the sacrament(s) of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. To learn more or to enroll in the RCIA program, please contact Rebecca at rcarmic1@depaul.edu. First Communion: Requires two years of classes.
