THE ASP mission trip is planned for July 24th-July 31st. We have a crew that has been waiting for two years to make this trip. We still have spaces available. If you would like to volunteer to go to this year’s ASP trip, please contact Caesar Gorski for more information. If you would like to donate to ASP, we are asking you to put your donation in the heating envelope or an envelope marked heating between March 15 and September 1st. PLEASE MAKE THIS CONTRIBUTION IN ADDITION TO YOUR NORMAL DONATION. We will use that donation for current expenses since our giving is down. We will then take the same amount of your donation and donate that amount to ASP out of our Benevolence fund. This is a way of boosting our much needed current fund while also supporting ASP. We will be collecting school supplies and backpacks again this year for the children of our clients. Our biggest needs this year include: Backpacks - small - packs with cartoon characters, Disney or similar are very popular, medium and especially large backpacks since even middle school children carry a large quantity of books, 24 count packs of crayons, Fiskar children's scissors, boxes of 24 colored pencils, plastic pencil boxes, pencil cases with 3 holes to go into binders for the older children, composition books for elementary age school children, red pens, packs of 3x5 index card, packs of dividers for binders, 1" three-ring binders, folders with prongs, three-ring loose leaf filler paper, black dry erase markers, packs of dry erase markers containing 4 different colors, highlighters of any color, mechanical pencils, Sharpie markers, small pencil sharpeners, packs of Post-It notes and flash drives. We will be distributing backpacks and school supplies at the food pantry throughout the month of August and will gladly accept donations through mid-August. All donations can be delivered to the Daily Bread Community Food Pantry. There is someone there to receive donations Monday through Friday from 9 A.M. until Noon. Since we distribute food to clients on Wednesday mornings from 9 to 11 A.M, you might want to avoid those times. You can also drop off school supplies at any time in the beige bin near the garage doors on the side of the food pantry. This bin is checked each morning by our volunteers. Thank you so very much for your dedicated and generous support of this project! We sincerely appreciate it! Good News Deadline GOOD NEWS DEADLINE For the AUGUST Edition is SUNDAY, JULY 18TH! Please send all submissions to jelcsecretary@verizon.net or drop off at the Church office. 4
Pastoral Musing… Lately I have been thinking about transitions in life. To live is to change and experience various transitions as we mature and grow. Life is a succession of transitions – from crawling to walking, from making noises to speaking words, from being dependent to being interdependent, and the list goes on and on. There are the transitions of starting school, of graduating from one school to start another, from High School to college or work, from college to work, from one profession/job to another, moving from one community to another, change in careers for jobs, of being single to being with another and again the list goes on and on. Transitions are very much a central part of life. I probably am thinking about this so much because of my move to Jerusalem, of becoming a grandfather and the transition we all are undertaking from the lockdowns and restrictions of this past year to a time of fewer restrictions. We went from a normal existence to a pandemic time of total change to now a time of returning or reimaging what the ‘new norm’ will be like. How will life be different, in what ways are we different, what will the future look and feel like? These some of the questions we are asking ourselves or at least I am asking. How do we recreate ‘church’ in post-pandemic time? Will the things that worked before still be effective? What new ways will we need to reengage with others within the congregation and the community? So many questions and uncertainties! I found some quotes that may help: “The moments between what you once were, and who you are now becoming, is where the dance of life really takes place.” Barbara De Angelis “If God truly does work all things for good of those who love Him, then our purpose in each transition is not simply to succeed or transition well. It’s to trust God and follow His direction. I have experienced joyful transitions as well as more difficult and challenging transitions. I cannot say for certain where this transition we are now experiencing will lead us, but I can say we are not alone in the journey. We are all in this together, as a congregation and as the people of God. When we begin new journeys or transitions with hope and courage and with the faith that God in the Holy Spirit will lead us and support us we will find strength and surprise in the journey and the destination. I have hope and confidence that this is a time for we the disciples of Christ at Jerusalem to be confident in the future even if it is unknown. We have the opportunity to rethink who we are and who we believe God needs us to be. We have the opportunity to recreate ourselves as a church so that we touch more lives and discover the vibrancy of our faith. I for one look forward to our future as a congregation. I believe in the gifts that God has given us and I chose to celebrate this time of discovery and spiritual growth. Let us join together in our hope and faith in where God is leading us. Remember, the greatest transition of all time was the birth of Jesus into our world which led to his act of love in sacrificing his life for us and showing us the new life we have in His resurrection. Now that is a true transition! I pray God will grant us all this sense of life and joy in the resurrection we are now undergoing as we redefine and recreate ourselves and our church. Pastor Stan 5
Thank You Dear JELC Congregation, If you are reading this you have much to be thankful for. Hopefully you and all of your family have come through this Pandemic healthy. We as a congregation have a lot to be thankful for from our members. The gifts they have given are truly of themselves, their time, and their possessions. I would like to acknowledge and thank all that have contributed in some way to keep JELC open over the last year. Thank you to those that continued their donations as often as they were able. To the Altar guild. To Tim and Nancy Arnold for counting EVERY week. For Tim Arnold and Paul Ensminger for the landscaping and general property care over the last year. To Michael Mancini for the streaming and for developing a “Stream Team.” To all those on committees that have remained active: the Care Team, Worship and Music, ASP Team, VBS Coordinators, and to Finance - one of the most active committees. Thank you also to Glenda and David for organizing and planning our services while we awaited Pastor Stan’s arrival. Special thanks to Congregational Council members for the many hours they worked to keep us going. And finally, thank you to all the unmentioned people that did things that may have gone unnoticed but were very necessary. We are truly blessed! Tony Damiani Congregational Council President. ENSMINGER SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS 2021 LINDSAY FRY AND AARON FRY – 2021 ENSMINGER SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES We honor and celebrate Lindsay and Aaron Fry as the 2021 recipients of the Ensminger Scholarships. It was a pleasure to hold the presentation during the June 6th Church service. We were pleased that Mrs. Amy Ensminger could greet and congratulate Lindsay and Aaron on this honor in Pastor Ken’s memory. You may know that this scholarship fund was organized 28 years ago when Pastor Ken retired from his ministry at Jerusalem Lutheran Church. Both Lindsay and Aaron submitted applications highlighting their academic achievement, community service and leadership skills. Our JELC Scholarship recipients are always recognized for the commitment they make to student life and their ability to offer teamwork skills and integrity and dependability to high school activities. Both Lindsay and Aaron are familiar to the Jerusalem family having grown up in the church and offering their support for many church activities. Being part of Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, serving as acolytes and serving breakfast as part of the ASP team, serving at the Food Pantry, assisting and being part of Jerusalem Youth activities, they have served our church family in many ways. Attending Perkiomen Valley High School, Lindsay has had the unique opportunity to be a part of the selective TAP team (Teacher Apprentice Program). This program has given her the opportunity to work with special needs students in a teacher role making up quizzes, working with the classroom teacher on les- son plans, assisting the students on an individual basis and observing and learning the role of the classroom teacher. This incentive to see and be part of a real classroom has motivated her to seek a teaching career at York College of Pennsylvania where she will attend in person this fall. Lindsay is an avid runner being part of the cross country and track teams at school as well as enjoying basketball and hanging out with her friends. Attending Bear Creek Camp for many years, Lindsay enjoys the camp life and sports. Aaron is a top tennis player on the Perkiomen Valley team. He noted he was encouraged to be part of the team even before he played the game! With a lot of hard work on Aaron’s part and the assistance of his coaches, in about 2 years’ time, Aaron sought the challenge and reached the goal of learning the game and excelling at it. Being part of the National Honor Society and his limitless interest in fitness certainly makes Aaron a person ready to meet the challenge of a secondary education. Heading to Temple University in person this fall and seeking a career in patient care, Aaron is well equipped to take on the studies that will equip him in this career of helping people. Needless to say, we see a bright future for Lindsay and Aaron ~ we wish them God’s blessing, we offer them our support and we applaud them and their parents, Robin and John Fry and brother, Curtis, a former Ensminger Scholar. Lindsay and Aaron please keep in touch! Thank you to all who continue to support the Ensminger Scholarship Fund and celebrate with joy the accomplishments of our young people. Dear Kenneth S. Ensminger Scholarship Comittee, Thank you to the Kenneth S. Ensminger It was an honor to receive the Kenneth S. Ensminger Scholarship Committee. I am grateful for scholarship. The funds provided will be of great your generosity in providing a scholarship assistance to me in paying for expenses associated with for my future academic endeavors. college. Thank you for the ongoing support from my Jerusalem Family. Aaron Fry Sincerely, Lindsay Fry 7

Please help make this milestone extra special by sending birthday cards to: Dear JELC Congregation: As you may remember the Green Team uses Signup Genius to allow volunteers to sign up to mow the grass. Each volunteer or family signs up to mow the grass. Volunteers can sign up for one or more weeks during the mowing season. This is the Signup Genius link: Green Team: Green Team - Lawn Mowing (signupgenius.com) The sign ups were understandably halted during the Pandemic to reduce the traffic through the JELC office and facility. Please consider signing up for mowing. It is a big job, and it is suggested that you partner up with another volunteer to lighten the job. A special thank you for all those who have signed up so far. There are two hand mowers and one riding mower stored in or next to the basement of the office building. Please contact the church office for access to the equipment. The donated riding mower has been recently serviced and is used primarily to mow the bottom lot (Second and Centennial) and the lawn near the office basement door. There also is fuel, a weed whacker and a backpack blower available for finishing work. Please contact me or Paul Ensminger for any questions about operating the equipment or Green Team questions. Thanks in advance for your assistance. AMEN Tim Arnold 9
JERUSALEM LUTHERAN NURSERY SCHOOL AND DAY CARE CENTER The fun has almost begun! June 28th will mark the official start of the 2021 Jerusalem Lutheran Summer Camp program. We are looking forward to nine weeks of fun and excitement. The JLDC staff has planned a variety of activities and projects to keep the children happy and engaged. For example, during the first week of camp, we will be tie dying tee shirts, cooling off under the sprinkler, searching for treasures on the Perkiomen Trail, holding a patriotic parade, and whipping up some tasty snacks. In addition, we are thrilled to be welcoming back several campers from past summers along with 12 new campers. It’s going to be a great summer and we can’t wait to get started! Safety First: Recently, the JLNS&DC staff attended a 3-hour training on first aid and pediatric CPR. The training was a refresher course for the staff. At the end of the training, each staff member’s certification was renewed. Also, on another evening, the staff received training on fire safety. The training is an annual requirement for all licensed child care centers in Pennsylvania. The safety and well-being of each child at JLNS&DC remains the staff’s #1 priority. We would like to offer special thanks to the following JELC members: Tony Damiani for installing locks on the classroom doors. Paul Ensminger for installing the air conditioner in the JLNS&DC office. We are grateful for their help and support! Reminder: We are currently enrolling Nursery School students for the 2021-2022 school year. The class which meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00 am until 11:30 am is open to children ages, three, four and five years old. Class size is limited. Council Meeting Highlights June 8, 2021 Regular Meeting The old refrigerator in the Youth Center was replaced. Paul Lotz repainted the lines in the parking lot. The Copier Committee is reviewing copier proposals since the current lease is ending soon. JLC will consider participating in Fall community events (Schwenksville Community Day, Skippack Day and/or the Schwenksville Halloween parade). Council approved following CDC and DOH guidelines, which means that vaccinated individuals are not required to wear a mask during services. Non-vaccinated persons are still required to wear masks. This change will take place starting June 13th. Council is actively pursuing an alternate service with more stringent Covid precautions, including mandatory mask wearing. Mutual Ministry In December 2014 Pennsylvania passed Child Protective Services Laws which requires volunteers having contact with or responsibility for children under 18 years of age to have two, and in some cases three, background clearances as well as a Disclosure Statement. The Child Abuse and Criminal History clearances for volunteers are valid for five years. There is presently no expiration for the Disclosure Statement. You can apply for a no-cost volunteer certification 57 months after your initial clearance. Some of our volunteers are reaching the five year mark and must apply for new clearances. Anyone who is up for a renewal in the next few months will receive a phone call from Mutual Ministry. Please remember that you will receive your clearances at your home address. You should KEEP THE ORIGINAL FOR YOURSELF and submit a copy to Mutual Ministry in a sealed envelope in the MM mailbox in the Cloister. You are responsible to keep track of your own clearances. MM keeps the files in a locked file and we won’t be able to provide copies. For online clearance requests (preferred method): http://www.keepkidssafe.pa.gov/resources/clearances/index.htm. Paper copies for submission by mail will be in the Narthex or church office when the quarantine is over. Most volunteers need the (1) Child Abuse and (2) Criminal History. Volunteers who have not lived in PA for the past 10 consecutive years also need the FBI fingerprints. Additionally, new volunteers will need to sign a Disclosure Statement and have it witnessed. If you have any questions, please contact Marcia Ehrhart, 610.287.7176. 11
