From the Pastor Dear Parishioners: On June 27, 1794 during the French Revolution, Blessed Madeleine Fontaine and 3 other Sisters went to the guillotine while singing “Ave Maria Stella.” Blessed Madeleine, as she was about to die, proclaimed to the crowd, “Listen Christians! We are the last victims. The persecution is going to stop. The gallows will be destroyed. The altars of Jesus will rise again gloriously.” June 28th we remember St. Irenaeus, Bishop of Smyrna, who was martyred around 202. He was the first to provide a coherent rationale for a Christian Bible, including New and Old Testaments. The first to offer a comprehensive account of belief in God’s universal providential and redemptive salvation. Also on that day, we remember St. John Southworth who was executed on June 28, 1654 in England. He was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1970 as one of the 40 Martyrs of England and Wales. June 29th is the Feast of Saints Peter & Paul. Peter died in 64 under Nero. He was a fisherman and leader of the Apostles. Paul was also martyred in Rome in 67; a Pharisee who became the “Apostle to the Gentiles.” Both are principal Patrons of Rome. June 30th is the feast of the First Martyrs of the Church. Many Christians were tortured, crucified and burned alive by Nero in 64. June 30th we remember Venerable Pierre Toussaint. He was a freed slave from Haiti. Throughout his life he gained a reputation for saintliness and charity in New York City. He built shelters for orphans and an employment agency. He helped slaves procure freedom. He was instrumental in building the Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral. He died on June 30, 1853. He said, “I have never been a slave to any man or woman but I am a servant of the Almighty God who made us all. When one of his children is in need, I am glad to be His slave.” Our Parish was officially established on July 1, 1980. Please continue to pray for all parishioners whether living or deceased. July 1st is the Feast of St. Junipero Serra who lived from 1713 to 1784. He was a Franciscan Missionary from Majorca, Spain. He established 9 of the California Mission Churches. He is recognized as a builder of the State of California. He was, as St. John Paull II said, “...an exemplary model of selfless evangelizer.” He tried to protect the native population from the injustices of colonial rule. July 2nd is the First Friday of the Month. Please remember the 9 First Friday Devotions in honor of the Sacred Heart and in reparation for sin. July 3rd is the Feast of St. Thomas, whose doubting gave way to Faith when he saw the Risen Lord. He is associated with the founding of the Church in south India, to this day called St. Thomas Catholics. He was martyred in the 1st Century. Yours in Christ, Fr. Herb Today is the Peter’s Pence Collection, a worldwide collection that supports the activities of the Holy See through which Pope Francis governs the Church and exercises his charitable works. The conference normally draws 400-500+ attendees from over 40 states, as well as internationally. It is being warmly welcomed by the Archdiocese of Denver and Archbishop Samuel Aquila.
