Relax!
by Mary Miltenberger
for Health Ministry

                        Think you thrive on stress?
Think again. The stress hormone cortisol
                        triggers the “fight-or-flight” response that
helps our bodies deal with stress, which
has a profound effect on our thinking,
feeling, heart and lungs, immune system,
digestive system, and more. After a long
period of time it can cause high blood
                        pressure, disrupt sleep cycles, create
negative mood patterns, zap your energy,
and even cause you to store body fat!

Relaxation can help reduce cortisol and give you a better chance
to minimize negative stress effects and improve your overall
health. True relaxation requires a shift from the outlook of
fight-or-flight to “rest and digest.” Scientific research is finding
that relaxation generally uses our conscious mind to make
subconscious changes. When you consciously relax, your heart
rate, breathing rate, blood pressure, and hormones like adrenaline
balance out.

This makes our conscious activity more effective, including
increased concentration and decreased anxiety. That pile of
work isn’t going to do itself, but when you are stressed, your
body uses extra energy that results in anxiety and lack of focus.

                      The Wisdom of Proverbs
A dog’s kennel is not a place to keep sausage. (Danish proverb)

If you’ve just been through an incredibly stressful time, you
may feel as if you’ve been hit by a truck. This is the “letdown
effect.” Your body protects you during stressful times by
    boosting your
    immune response.
    When the stress lifts,
    the body can go
    through rapid
    changes that weaken
    the immune system,
    leaving you with
    physical symptoms
    such as headaches,
    stomach disorders,
    panic attacks,
    and other pain
    reactions.
    Knowing how to
    relax and rebalance
will help with all these reactions.

                               Deep relaxation settles our
                               overactive brain waves and
allows you to attain a calm,
                               stable state of mind, even
when you are no longer actively
                               relaxing. De-stressing is a form
                               of restoring the body.
                               In regulating hormones and
                               balancing brain waves, the
goal is to return your body to restoration and healing. Good
sleep can be one of the biggest stress relievers.

Have trouble sleeping during times of stress?
                Try one of these ideas:

 Make tomorrow's to-do list before bed so you can
    “let it go.”

 DIY acupressure – press, release, and press again in the
depression between your eyes at the top of your nose.

 Block the right nostril and inhale through the left for about
    5 minutes.

 The classic hot bath, especially with lavender if you
    like it.

 Neroli oil from bitter orange blossoms, especially when
mixed with lavender or chamomile in water and spritzed in
    bedroom or on the pillow.

During the day, meditation can also make
positive changes in the structure and
function of the brain. A 2010 study
suggests that meditating changes
electrical brain waves to activity
associated with a greater wakeful, relaxed
attention, even more than simply trying
to rest. Researchers found theta waves
were increased during meditation. These
waves likely originate from a relaxed attention that monitors
our inner experiences. Prayer can be a special form of
meditation and may convey all the same health benefits.

                    The Butterfly
                          by Bob Mackenzie

               A most beautiful Yellow Swallowtail,
                        Perfect in every way,
Sits in the shade of the portico,
At the entrance to the Abby of Gethsemane.

It lies on the floor, wings fully spread,
Trying to absorb enough warmth to fly.
Compassionately, I reach out my finger,
Allowing the creature to crawl on.

               Without hesitation, it steps aboard,
For a trip into the sunlight,
Where it rests for a few seconds,
And then warmed and grateful, flutters away.

                 There on a spiritual retreat,
Did God touch me with this wonderful gift?

(Written after being on a silent retreat at
           Gethsemane Trappist Monastery in Kentucky.)

       The Student Most Likely to…
       by Cindy Rogerson

Although the yellow brick build-
ing at 545 Odlin Avenue sits idle
today, at one time it was a very
popular parochial school, Our
Lady of Mercy. In the 1950s
and 1960s it had two classes of
each grade,with each classroom
packed with students.

Many former students moved on to Chaminade, Julienne, St. Joe’s
or even Chaminade-Julienne. From there many graduates went on
to make quite the name for themselves. Three of these graduates
were honored on April 25, 2019 at Chaminade-Julienne’s Distin-
guished Alumni Banquet.

 Sister Rita Sturwold SNDdeN, went to Julienne in the late
1950's and graduated in 1960. She then went on to follow
her vocation of becoming a nun. Her dream was to become a
teacher. Although she started her career in the classroom, God
had bigger plans for her. Much of her experience has been in
education administration or in spreading the word of the
Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.

 Ten years later, a graduate by the name of Christopher
Gunther was on his way to do great things in the United States
Marine Corps. He had learned his Reading, Writing and
Mathematics at OLOM. He graduated from Chaminade in 1972.
Chris did not join the USMC directly after high school, instead
he earned a degree from the University of Minnesota.
This added education, growth and maturity prepared him for
the many challenges he would face during his time as an
    enlisted man.

                        The Wisdom of Proverbs
The reverse side also has a reverse side. (Japanese proverb)

Chris is retired at this time. I can only imagine that he has
the chance to spend more time with his wife and children,
and enjoy the role of being a grandfather.

 In 1984 a young man named Peter Healy graduated from
Chaminade-Julienne. He remembers his days at OLOM as
good days. He found CJ to be a bit more challenging, but
feels that he was guided in the right direction. He was able
to continue his education at two more Catholic universities.
He went into healthcare administration, and has been the
president of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Bos-
         ton for many years.

 There certainly have been many more OLOM students that
were not recognized this evening, but have gone on to
achievements in their own lives. One that comes to mind is
Dan Meixner, the president of Chaminade-Julienne High
School. He and Peter lived right around the corner from each
other. I can't help but think that the values they learned at
OLOM and CJ just might have rubbed off on each other and
they still share the lessons of living their lives in the Marianist
         traditions.

 I have saved one past graduate who is still a member of
our parish. She attended Our Lady of Mercy School, and went
on to graduate from Julienne High School in 1968. She
graduated from WSU with a degree in Elementary Edu-
cation. For several years she put that degree to good use by
teaching at Our Lady of Mercy School . She then went on to
work in our parish food pantry. Although she is no longer
employed by the parish she is an avid volunteer serving as a
Eucharistic minister, assisting with funeral lunches, and can
be seen helping in any way needed. You're right it's me,
         CINDY Rogerson.

St. Vincent de Paul News
Dear Fellow Parishioners,

You are no doubt, familiar with the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul. Here in Dayton the most visible outreaches to the
community are the Gateway Shelters, the Community Store
and Food Pantry on Edwin C. Moses Blvd.

Within our parish, many of our neighbors struggle to make
ends meet. An element of St. Vincent de Paul that many
times flies “under the radar” is the St. Vincent de Paul
Conference. Each conference serves as stewards of funds
donated by you. Every day, SVdP volunteers work with
families to provide emergency food, help keep the lights on,
and avoid eviction. SVdP volunteers continuously work to
provide individuals and families with assistance regardless of
religion, race, or national origin. Right now we are providing
long-term disaster relief for those moving into our area that
have been affected by the Memorial Day tornados.

The Friends of the Poor® Walk/Run is a national special event that
was started eleven years ago to raise awareness and funds for the
Society of St. Vincent de Paul. This year, all funds
generated by the walk will go directly to the conferences.
We will be joining 32 area conferences in organizing the
walk here in Dayton.

The walk will be a 2 mile walk on September 28, 2019 at Cox
Arboretum beginning at 10 a.m. with a 9 a.m. registration time.
Lunch will be provided for walkers following the event at St. Henry
Parish Center.

Will you please consider becoming a walker or sponsor for our An-
nual Friends of the Poor® Walk/Run scheduled for Saturday,
September 28, 2019?

                    Anointing of the Sick
                             by Deacon Skip Royer

     “Is anyone among you sick?”
     He should summon the presbyters
of the church, and they should
pray over him and anoint (him)
with oil in the name of the Lord,
and the prayer of faith will save
the sick person, and the Lord will
     raise him up… (James 5:14-15)

The anointing is called the Sacrament of the Sick, one of the
seven sacraments. This Sacrament is meant for someone with
a serious illness, someone who is going to have a serious
operation, an elderly person who has become weakened,
     or someone near death.

Over the years after Christ, the use of this Sacrament became
rather narrow in scope. It was given mostly to the dying and
called the “last rites” or “extreme unction.”

The Second Vatican Council recalled the original meaning of the
Sacrament saying that you do not need to be on your deathbed to
     receive it.

In the rite the priest prays, lays hands and anoints the sick person.

If the person is near death the last rites include confession before
the anointing and Eucharist after anointing. This Eucharist is
called “viaticum” which means “food for the journey.”

                           The Wisdom of Proverbs
When the sun rises, it rises for everyone. (Cuban proverb)
13

Only a priest or bishop can confer Anointing of the Sick.
Deacons and laypersons cannot. But viaticum (last communion)
can be given to a dying person by a deacon or layperson.

A person can receive the Sacrament of the Sick more than
once if they have a different illness or their illness becomes
more serious. The elderly can receive the Sacrament if they
have become weakened because of age even though no serious
illness is present.

Someone in a coma can receive anointing if it is presumed they
would have asked for it when they were able.

Anointing of the Sick is not given after a person has died.
Sacraments are between a living person and God. There are
special prayers for those who have already died.

Anointing of the Sick is one of the seven Sacraments given to us
by Christ to strengthen us on our journey to eternal life.

                            Recipe by: Kevin Lee Jacobs

     Ingredients:
 4 thin slices of good quality white bread
 2 generous tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
 A 3 1/2-inch length of English cucumber, peeled and
cut lengthwise on a Mandoline to create 1/16-inch-thick strips
        or "rectangles"
 Salt and freshly-ground black pepper
 3 large mint leaves, chopped

     Instructions:

Generously butter two slices of bread.

Close the sandwich with the other but-
tered slice of bread, and press down

  COMING THIS FALL (AND BEYOND):
       2019-2020
                by Jan Reed

New beginnings are exciting. This
coming year we have big plans to pray,
educate, entertain and serve. The list
below is not exhaustive. The renewal of
our energy as a parish is not limited to
these programs. Your input is welcomed.
Is there something you would like to see
happen in our parish? Please contact the
office so we can help facilitate your ideas.

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) – Do you know
someone who is interested in investigating the Catholic Faith?
Our RCIA program is a great place to start. These sessions
will begin in the Fall and continue bi-weekly until Spring.
Anyone interested in exploring the Catholic Faith with a
possibility of becoming Catholic is welcome. There are no
requirements or commitments required. Maybe you just want
a refresher course in Catholic Doctrine. All are welcome to
attend as a participant, seeker, sponsor, teacher or observer.
This is the heart of our obligation as Catholics to evangelize.

BREAKFAST CLUB – We are working on several topics for
Breakfast Clubs to be held at Our Lady of Mercy following
the 9:30 am Mass on Sunday. These will probably be held
once a month from October through December. If you have
suggestions on a topic or speaker that would be of interest,
please call the office.

                      The Wisdom of Proverbs
A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures. (Irish proverb)
16
FAMILY FAITH FORMATION – This intergenerational
gathering meets twice a month beginning in the fall. It is geared
to meet catechetical needs of children from preschool to
Confirmation. After Confirmation they join the Youth
Ministry. FFF follows the graded course of study as set by the
Archdiocese, especially for those children in public school, to
keep them active in Catholic studies. Texts are provided for each
grade level and large group topics are presented at each class.
These are interactive sessions led by a trained catechist and
expected to serve those children who cannot meet their Catholic
     education expectations at their school.

SACRAMENTAL PREP CLASSES – We will be offering
Sacramental preparation classes for Reconciliation, First
Communion and Confirmation. If you have children needing
any of these Sacraments please call the office as soon as
possible so that resources can be ordered. These classes
usually start in January and are bi-weekly until Spring. They
are important preparation sessions for receiving any of the
Sacraments. Reconciliation and First Communion are
normally offered to second grade and older while Confirmation
is recommended for seventh or eighth grade and older.

FAITH FORMATION COMMISSION – This commission
discusses, plans, and implements parish faith formation
opportunities. Please prayerfully consider joining this
commission so that we have a variety of ideas and can
recruit volunteers for individual programs. This group works on
the parish retreat planning, children’s classes and RCIA. They
also plan the Breakfast Clubs, parish retreats and missions,
facilitate the Small Christian Communities, Bible Study and
other children and adult education series. Please call the office if
you have ideas for the upcoming year. More importantly, we
need new members to meet once monthly from Fall to Spring to
     help facilitate these opportunities.

CATHOLICS COME HOME – Our parish teams with the
northern region (parishes of Precious Blood, St. Rita and St. Paul)
to offer this three week series immediately following Christmas
and Easter. Personal invitations are sent to those who might be in-
terested (usually family members of parishioners or neighbors)
and flyers are available as well as advertising (on TV, social
media, and in the newspaper) to reach those interested in re-
turning to the Catholic Faith. These sessions are facilitated by the
pastoral staff of both regions. You can submit names to the parish
office at anytime if you know someone who might benefit from
these meetings. No commitment is required, no expectations are
made. It is a great place to ask the tough questions without judg-
ment. Dates, times and locations will be determined as we near the
Christmas season.

SMALL CHRISTIAN COMMUNITIES (SCC) – Our parish is
well known in the diocese for our long time commitment to
Small Christian Communities. It began in the 1970s with the
Renew program. Many of those original groups still meet for
Scripture, prayer, faith sharing, and fun. We will begin a
campaign in the Fall to grow these groups with trained
facilitators and interested attendees. If you don’t belong to
a faith sharing group yet, please consider trying one on twice
a month to see what is offered. These communities become a
second family and are vital to personal faith development.
Stay tuned…

     3% Hydrogen Peroxide: 100%
     Clean!
     by Tink Siwecki

Hydrogen peroxide is a not so secret,
     secret cleaning, disinfecting, and
     hygiene product. It’s cheap and
plentiful and can be used in many,
     many ways!

     Cleaning Kitchens & Bathroom
 To clean and disinfect countertops in your bathroom or
kitchen spray with hydrogen peroxide. Pour 1 to 2 cups of
3% hydrogen peroxide into the toilet bowl and allow it to
soak for 30 minutes. Use a toilet brush to scrub the bowl
interior and then flush away the grime.
 Soap scum and dirt as well as other stains build up in the
bathtub and tiled surfaces over time. To make cleaning
easier spray the tub with hydrogen peroxide. Leave for
around 30 minutes to loosen the scum.
 Dirty mirrors and glass surfaces can be difficult to clean.
To do the job efficiently, spray with hydrogen peroxide.
This will loosen the dirt which can then be wiped away with
        a clean lint-free cloth.
 Spray the inside of your refrigerator, with hydrogen
peroxide. Let it soak, then after a few minutes wipe with a
clean cloth to get rid of grime and stains.
 To thoroughly clean and get rid of germs on cutting boards
that you’ve cut raw meat and other foods, spray with
hydrogen peroxide and let it sit for a while then rinse.
 Dirty dishrags and sponges need to be soaked to disinfect
them. The most effective way to do this is to soak them in
hydrogen peroxide for up to 30 minutes to ensure they are
        thoroughly disinfected.

                         The Wisdom of Proverbs
In a closed mouth, flies do not enter. (Mexican proverb)
Use as an All-Purpose Cleaner 19
 All–purpose cleaners are expensive.
   To save money use hydrogen
peroxide which is a cheaper, and
   practical, alternative to commercial
   cleaners. Hydrogen peroxide can be
used undiluted or mixed with water
   for cleaning.
 Fungal spores can impede
   seed germination. The spores
   can be removed and germination
   improved by soaking the seeds
   in hydrogen peroxide.
 Get rid of the wax and other contaminants on fruit and
vegetables by spraying them with hydrogen peroxide.
Let the spray soak in for a couple of minutes then rinse
   in cold water.

Remove Unpleasant Odors & Stains from Fabrics
and Whiten Laundry
 Fabrics can pick up odors that are unpleasant. To remove
the odors and freshen up the fabric soak in a mixture of
   hydrogen peroxide and white vinegar.
 To remove organic stains, like coffee, wine, blood and
sweat from a fabric mix two parts hydrogen peroxide with
one part dish detergent. The mixture should then be applied
to the stains. Hydrogen peroxide can bleach some darker
colored fabrics, so be careful! You can also pour hydrogen
peroxide directly on a stain for about a minute then rinse
   with cold water.
 Laundry items can be become yellow or dingy. Add a cup
of hydrogen peroxide to the wash water, leaving the
laundry to soak for around 15 to 30 minutes.

                          The Wisdom of Proverbs
If an ass goes a-traveling, he’ll not come home a horse. (African proverb)

Disinfecting
 To ensure oral hygiene is maintained it is important that
toothbrushes are regularly disinfected. One way to do this is
by soaking them in hydrogen peroxide. It will help kill the
bacteria and germs which thrive in the typical bathroom and
   which can infect toothbrushes.
 To disinfect small wounds and avoid infection use hydrogen
peroxide as it is a natural anti-sceptic.

Hydrogen peroxide is a handy cheap alternative to harsh
cleaners and disinfectants. It comes in several different grades
but the most commonly used is household hydrogen peroxide
(3%) that comes in the brown bottle at the store. The brown
bottle is used because it can lose its potency if exposed to light.
These are only a few of the many uses of Hydrogen Peroxide.
Just remember that when you use hydrogen peroxide, other
cleaning agents or disinfectants please practice safety: read
the directions and do research to see if it meets your needs.

                          The Wisdom of Proverbs
                    The church is near but the road is icy;
the bar is far away but I will walk carefully. (Russian proverb)
